AUSTIN (KXAN) — The failure of a locomotive power unit and slack between train cars caused a Union Pacific freight train derailment on April 23 in downtown Austin, according to a Federal Railroad Administration incident report. The train was travelling north just before 4:45 a.m. when it rounded a downtown curve heading westward near the intersection of Third and Bowie streets.

KERR COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – Summer camp operators in Texas’ Hill Country were on high alert for severe flooding Wednesday and Thursday. This week’s flooding has had striking similarities to the catastrophic floods on July 4, 2025, which topped the banks of many of the same rivers. That storm took the lives of at least 138 people, 119 of which were in Kerr County. At Camp Mystic, near Hunt, Texas, 25 girls and two counselors died during the flood.
