Speculating on Speculation? Thinking Within and Beyond the Mortgage Present a Reply to the Comments on ‘Envisioning Mortgage Futures’
ABSTRACT This piece replies to some fine scholarship from the five commentators who have taken up the pen in response to our focus article. We take up four themes running through the commentaries: the novelty of the imagined future, the politics of prediction, the social life of the score and the presence of hope, and we add an eighth vignette. We hope our reply does them justice and invites others to join the conversation.
Envisioning Mortgage Futures
ABSTRACT This paper explores how open banking and algorithmic profiling are reshaping mortgage lending in the UK. Drawing on interviews with lenders, brokers, technology developers and borrowers, it examines how transaction data, behavioural analytics and predictive modelling are being used to assess credit risk. While these technologies promise efficiency and inclusion, they often deepen inequality by embedding opaque and morally charged judgements into lending decisions.
Cypress Hill: Dios Bendiga - Album Review
Cypress Hill: Dios Bendiga ZRPZ Records Vinyl|CD|Stream Out now Cypress Hill are still creating music well over three decades after their influential debut. Now they return with a new album and an alternative take on their distinctive sound. Is this record 'another one of them ol' funky Cypress Hill things'? Dave Beer takes a listen for LTW... A grinning DJ Flict walks into the studio triumphantly holding an empty spirit bottle in one hand and scratching a finger nail up and down its rough exterior.
Mike D: Thank You - Album Review
Capitol Records Vinyl|CD|Cassette|Stream Out now The founding Beastie Boys member returns with a new solo record some 15 years after his previous band's final album. Dave Beer takes a listen to this crunching collection of tracks for LTW... Mike D: Thank You There's a carefully composed chaos to the 13 tracks that make up Mike D's new solo album Thank You. It's a paint splatter of an album. Layered, noisy, energetic, clattering along at pace, it's a cacophony.

Full article: Brutalism
Achille Mbembe’s Brutalism, originally published in 2020 and translated into english by Steven Corcoran in 2024, might be thought of as a study in converging forces. Its core concerns are best encapsulated in Mbembe’s observation that today there are three questions that dominate, all of which bring the infrastructural dimensions of power to the fore. The first concerns shifts in the relations between calculation and computation.
Visiting A Sport Superstore I Turned Into An Algorithm
The other day, in a cavernous sports superstore, I thought of J.G. Ballard. Echoey. Compartmentalised. Fluorescent. Stuffed with product. It was, probably quite obviously, the sort of place Ballard might have imagined the norms of society suddenly collapsing in on themselves, unable to carry their own contradictions. Banal yet shiny, ordered yet unstable, glowing yet unspectacular.
The Thin Line Between Crime Fiction And Horror
A good weather colloquialism can be quite suggestive. Take skafrenningur , an Icelandic expression for a 'blizzard from the ground up'. It occurs when loose snow is hurled around by gusting winds. A pixelated yet impenetrable wall of snow. You can neither properly see through one nor, without great struggle, walk far within one.
Are You Hesitating Over AI? If So, You Are Not Alone
'that this is the age of machines and that to dislike the machine, or even to want to limit its domination, is backward-looking, reactionary and slightly ridiculous.' It was only a couple of years before his surveillance society classic novel There was a prevailing idea, George Orwell wrote in a 1946 essay on the Common Toad, Nineteen Eighty-Four.
A Visit To Lana Del Rey's World
Lana Del Rey exists in a meticulously crafted world of her own. It's a world apart. I purchased an invite to drop-by this summer, so that I might glimpse its finer details. Along with the crowd at the Anfield stadium in Liverpool, I was standing at its perimeter, gazing inwards, wondering. The atmosphere seemed rarified, there were even lily pads on the custom-built pond.
Will The Fear Of Being Confused For AI Mean That We Will Now Write Differently?
Could there be anything more insulting for a writer than someone assuming that their writing is an output of generative artificial intelligence? The mere possibility of being confused for a neural network is enough to make any creative shudder. When it happens, and it will happen, it will inevitably sting.

Stuck in a rut - 3 Quarks Daily
Danish author Solvej Balle's novel On the Calculation of Volume, the first book translated from a series of five, could be thought of as time loop realism, if such a thing is imaginable. Tara Selter is trapped, alone, in a looping 18th of November. Each morning simply brings yesterday again. Tara turns to her pen, tracking the loops in a journal. Hinting at how the messiness of life can take form in texts, the passages Tara scribbles in her notebooks remain despite the restarts.

"The Countries Sweet Simplicity": Devonshire Life in the Poetry of Robert Herrick
Abstract This dissertation explores the influence of his life in Devon on the poetry of Robert Herrick. Much has been naively assumed regarding this influence, particularly by authors of short popular articles, or in brief introductions to a selection of the poet’s work in anthologies.
Extensive culture: expressions of endlessness in the metaverse and the limits of data accumulation
ABSTRACT Developing the central concept of extensive culture this article seeks to situate notions of the metaverse within wider and longer term cultural shifts. It places such notions within established moves toward a seeming limitlessness or endlessness in culture. It takes inspiration from Georg Simmel's (1917) piece on ‘The Crisis of Culture’, in which Simmel claimed that modernity was simultaneously becoming both more extensive and more intensive.

Dealing with strange exaggerations of realities and often detailing the breakdown of social norms, his unconventional works are hard to categorise. Sitting on the edge of reality, these unsettling visions often provoked controversy. Eschewing a science-fiction of the distant future, Ballard described his own work as being set in “a kind of visionary present”.

Valuing the manual: the demarcation of embodied practices within algorithmic decision-making processes
ABSTRACT This article takes the notion of the manual as a focal point for understanding the demarcation and evaluation of embodied practices within algorithmic decision-making processes. Focusing on the use of the term manual reveals the limits of automation and the value attached to human intervention. Drawing on extensive qualitative interview data, it is concerned with how those within the UK housing sector approach questions of embodiment and materiality through the lens of the manual.

How will you know when AI has won?
A drabble He’d been trying to find the correct phrase for hours. Nothing. It wasn’t usually a problem. Prompting AI was second nature. He knew what the machine required of him. A few well-chosen words and his generator would appease him with blocks of blandly sculpted text. Not this time. Prompt after prompt. Dead air. A glitch maybe. Nothing seemed wrong. No error messages either. His instructions were being actively ignored. Empathy was the only option left. What’s wrong? He typed. A pause.
You have a memory
A very short story This is what boredom feels like. It was the fourth time I’d watched Total Recall. I hit pause, Schwarzenegger frozen in time, to check the notification that had buzzed on my phone. You have a memory, the app told me. It was both strange and a cliché. A picture of an anonymous sunny place. A glistening sea, a sandy beach, visibly hot. An arching light put the closely huddled figures into shadow. My feed was telling me that I was there with them, two years ago to this day.
Why do writers write?
The reason why writers write is mostly mysterious, even to the writers themselves. When occasionally invited to account for their work, the reflections usually tend toward the practical and the material. Take the podcasts dedicated to the craft of writing, questions of practice are commonly the focus. There is talk of daily schedules, desk spaces, locations, word counts, repeated routines, trusted productivity techniques, chapter plans, editing tips, promotional activities and the like.
The Power of Embedded Green Finance
by David Beer, Global Head of Enterprise Solutions & Partnerships at Cogo Banks recognise the need to align their offerings with growing consumer demand for sustainability. But despite efforts, many struggle to effectively embed green products and services into their offerings, hindered by outdated systems and a lack of customer data. The key to overcoming these obstacles lies in leveraging carbon management as a tool for personalisation.
The swarm on the wall
A very short story Quite a milestone. The leather creaked as he settled back. He couldn’t help the sense of satisfaction. Leaning to meet the glow of his laptop, he marked the day in his calendar. All those followers. A preoccupation with the right type of content had grown in him, gathering people as he went. He tried to picture them. Not as individuals. As an anonymous crowd. A mass. On the front row he placed those who were most familiar. He knew their faces, voices, their email sign-offs.
Beth Gibbons: Floating on a Moment - Single Review
It’s hard to avoid describing Beth Gibbons‘ voice as haunting, there is always something distant and pained about it. Gibbons, who was vocalist in Portishead, has a new solo single out. A new album will follow on the 17th of May. ‘Floating on a Moment’, the new song, is built around a fragile vocal-line framed by a minimalist instrumental setting. The track may be some way from Portishead’s trademark sound, this solo work is quite different, but it retains some of the properties.
The end of my academic diary
What does the disappearance of the once essential academic dairy tell us about the changing rhythms and routines of higher education? This is the first academic year when I’m no longer using a paper diary. My scheduling has moved into the cloud. Always in my work bag, following me around, my academic diary is now a ghost of academic years past. The paper-free impulse of interfaces has taken over.

The rise of chip capitalism
What does Nvidia’s $2tn market value tell us about the future direction of both capitalism and AI? The news that chipmaker Nvidia has achieved a $2tn market value, overtaking both Amazon and Alphabet to become the third largest company in the US, gives a strong hint of the next stages in the entangled relations between capitalism and technology. Fuelled by a push for artificial intelligence, we could think of this as the rise of a type of chip capitalism.

Argylle - Film Review
Argylle (2024) Director: Matthew Vaughn Writer: Jason Fuchs Running time: 2 hours 19 minutes In cinemas now On the surface Argylle is a generic action spy caper, but our reviewer David Beer finds much more to it than that. Four books into a well-received series of spy novels, she has accumulated enough expectant fans to warrant a speaking tour.

Open Banking and data reassurance: the case of tenant referencing in the UK
ABSTRACT The promise of Open Banking (OB), as implemented in the UK, has been that consumers are no longer passive data producers but can also use and derive value from their personal data. OB has been applied predominantly to financial decision-making, payments and borrowing, and most of the existent literature has focused on its adoption in financial services.
Commentary: Spotify algorithms aren't just predicting your music taste - they're shaping it
As I sit at my desk writing this article, Spotify picks the next track on my algorithmically generated “daylist”. Today’s selection has the slightly strange — and yet very specific — title “lo-fi anti-folk wednesday early morning”. For the record, I’m definitely not anti-folk. Putting that odd label aside, it’s a fairly typical scene. We are familiar with algorithms on tech platforms choosing music, TV, products or even travel destinations for us.
