Since the Industrial Revolution, burning coal and oil has filled the air with sulfur, shortening the lives of billions of people. In response, countries passed stringent air pollution laws requiring coal plants to scrub out sulfur and ships to switch to cleaner fuels. Global sulfur emissions have fallen some 40% since 2006. China alone has slashed them by about 70%. We should celebrate cleaner air, but we also have to reckon with an unintended consequence.

Comparing the benefits and risks of solar geoengineering
By: David Keith and Anthony Harding (Georgia Tech) Climate change has risks—and those risks are only increasing. Many of these might be reduced by solar geoengineering. Solar geoengineering also has risks, and it requires rigorous, transparent research before it is deployed. One major question though is how does the reduction in risks from solar geoengineering compare to the additional risks its use entails? Or equivalently, how big are the benefits of solar geoengineering compared to its harms?

New Study of Geoengineering Raises New Worries
A cloud-modifying method proposed for blocking some sunlight in order to cool western coastal areas of the United States could work, at least initially, but also could cause severe adverse effects in the region and across other nations, according to a Guardian report on a new modeling study. The cautionary findings reinforce David W. Keith’s call in Issues for strengthening research on both solar geoengineering and possible policy and governance options.

Solar geoengineering could start soon if it starts small
For half a century, climate researchers have considered the possibility of injecting small particles into the stratosphere to counteract some aspects of climate change. The idea is that by reflecting a small fraction of sunlight back to space, these particles could partially offset the energy imbalance caused by accumulating carbon dioxide, thereby reducing warming as well as extreme storms and many other climate risks.
