Creating a literary lineage in the pages of a text creates room for memorable homages, subversion, and allusion if handled skillfully. What follows is a look at some novels that have memorably incorporated real-life authors into their pages.

PATIENT X by David Peace
An imaginative glimpse behind the curtain of a sheltered, definitively troubled writer of a century past. “In the next life, if there is such a punishment, I wish to be reborn as sand.” So says Ry?nosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927), the protagonist and reluctant center of Peace’s (Red or Dead, 2014, etc.) latest venture into fact-based fiction—and not as much a departure from his procedurals as one might imagine, either.

In Praise Of Pylons:
The title of Victoria Gatehouse's estimable debut collection is apt: light and its propensity for illumination emerges as a catalyst for revelation as much as it is an observable phenomenon.Leeds-born Gatehouse, a trained clinical researcher, remains as fascinated, and distracted, by the capacity of this phenomenon to institute change in appearance of matter, as she recognises the miraculous power of poetry to transmute emotional intensity from the, often, simple formulation of words.Light in...
Sounds In Silence:
Early in Jonathan Davidson's wonderfully diverting new book is an autobiographical comment adverting to his childhood, which indirectly foreshadows his future approach to writing: 'I felt', he says, 'as capable of being affected by his (Keats') poetry as any scholar'. Davidson is a great leveller, rightly asserting that poetry is for everyone, not only specious elites protected by walls of self-perpetuating academic jargon.
