Trump Calls Opposition to AI Data Centers a Mistake: Americans Disagree
President Trump recently mocked communities who oppose AI data centers “backward,” claiming, “If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame. Earlier this summer he called widespread opposition to Artificial Intelligence data centers a “mistake,” citing benefits to local communities. A recent Gallup poll shows that 71% of Americans disagree.
Understanding the aged care and NDIS interface
The boundary between aged care and the National Disability Insurance Scheme has never been clean. Thousands of Australians sit at the intersection – NDIS participants approaching 65 who will eventually transition to aged care, younger people in residential aged care who are NDIS-eligible, and older Australians with disability who receive supports from both systems simultaneously.

Georgia Frames Cop-City Protest As Criminal Conspiracy
Above photo: Protesters in January marching in Minneapolis in remembrance of Manuel Teran, who was shot and killed by officers at a prolonged protest in an Atlanta forest. Chad Davis, Wikimedia Commons. Georgia’s RICO indictment is an attempt to repress social movement activity, using the state’s tools of legal interpretation and enforcement. When does lawful protest become criminal activity?
Georgia framing opposition to 'Cop City' police training complex as a criminal conspiracy
Dec. 4 (UPI) -- When does lawful protest become criminal activity? That question is at issue in Atlanta, where 57 people have been indicted and arraigned on racketeering charges for actions related to their protest against a planned police and firefighter training center that critics call "Cop City." Racketeering charges typically are reserved for people accused of conspiring toward a criminal goal, such as members of organized crime networks or financiers engaged in insider trading.

Native American mothers whose children have been separated from them experience a raw and ongoing grief that has no end
Native American mothers whose children were separated from them – either through child removal for assimilation into residential boarding schools or through coerced adoption – experience the kind of grief no parent should ever feel. Yet theirs is a loss that is ongoing, with no sense of meaning or closure.

Satellite Remote Sensing for Environmental Data Justice: Perspectives from Anti-Prison Community Organizers on the Uses of Geospatial Data
INTRODUCTION “Datafication,” defined in this study as the increasing mediation of contemporary social life by data-intensive digital platforms,1,2 has enabled the reproduction of inequality through the embedding of preexisting biases into technology.3 Despite these consequences, it has also facilitated community organizing by grassroots actors across a range of social movements and goals to combat inequalities.4,5 We see this paradigm shift in how cell phone videography, combined with the...
Mutual Aid as a Praxis for Critical Environmental Justice: Lessons from W.E.B. Du Bois, Critical Theoretical Perspectives, and Mobilising Collective Care in Disasters
Introduction In this era of intersecting social, political, economic, and ecological crises, we are witnessing a noteworthy rise in the awareness and practice of mutual aid (Springer 2020). The state's absence as an agent of care has become exceedingly clear, particularly in poor, BIPOC, queer, trans, and disabled communities.

Wild Urban Injustice: A Critical POET Model to Advance Environmental Justice

Although their experiences are clearly not the same, shared logics of oppression often impose harms through the environment on vulnerable and marginalized people and free-living nonhuman animals.

Parameterized syncmer schemes improve long-read mapping
Loading metrics Open Access Peer-reviewed Research Article ? This is an uncorrected proof. Abstract Motivation Sequencing long reads presents novel challenges to mapping. One such challenge is low sequence similarity between the reads and the reference, due to high sequencing error and mutation rates. This occurs, e.g., in a cancer tumor, or due to differences between strains of viruses or bacteria. A key idea in mapping algorithms is to sketch sequences with their minimizers.

Using syncmers improves long-read mapping
Abstract As sequencing datasets keep growing larger, time and memory efficiency of read mapping are becoming more critical. Many clever algorithms and data structures were used to develop mapping tools for next generation sequencing, and in the last few years also for third generation long reads. A key idea in mapping algorithms is to sketch sequences with their minimizers. Recently, syncmers were introduced as an alternative sketching method that is more robust to mutations and sequencing errors.
Dataset-adaptive minimizer order reduces memory usage in k-mer counting
Abstract The rapid, continuous growth of deep sequencing experiments requires development and improvement of many bioinformatics applications for analysis of large sequencing datasets, including k-mer counting and assembly. Several applications reduce RAM usage by binning sequences. Binning is done by employing minimizer schemes, which rely on a specific order of the minimizers. It has been demonstrated that the choice of the order has a major impact on the performance of the applications.

Environmental Justice and the Challenge of Black Lives Matter
As I write these words, representatives of the world's nations are meeting at the United Nations Conference of the Parties 26, to once again attempt to forge an agreement on tackling the wicked problem of global anthropogenic climate change. And although today is just the first day of that gathering, I can say with total confidence that whatever they do, it will be too little, too late, and long on posturing and photo ops while short on substance and action.

Pandemics, policing, and a just transition Original
These are difficult and trying times. We are all experiencing great anxiety associated with living through a global pandemic and a time of massive racial unrest, protest, and racist police violence. The horrors of the COVID-19 virus have been compounded and multiplied by the virus of white supremacy.

Environmental prisons - Sustainability - Green - January 9, 2020
About this story: David Pellow is a professor of environmental studies at UC Santa Barbara. This is an abridged version of the original story he wrote for Environmental Health News (ehn.org). The United States of America has the largest prison system of any nation on Earth, the largest number of prisoners of any country, and one of the highest percentages of imprisoned persons of any nation.
The disturbing link between environmental racism and criminalization
The United States of America has the largest prison system of any nation on Earth, the largest number of prisoners of any country, and one of the highest percentages of imprisoned persons of any nation. As of this writing there are more than 2 million people incarcerated in federal and state prisons, jails, immigration prisons and other "correctional" facilities in the United States; if all of those prisoners were housed in one location, it would constitute the fourth largest city in the nation.

No to New Oil Drilling
On March 13, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission is scheduled to vote on whether to approve the first of a trio of new oil projects in Cat Canyon, in the northern part of our county. Specifically, three oil companies — Aera Energy, ERG Resources, and PetroRock — are proposing 750 new oil wells near Santa Maria. If approved, these projects would triple our county’s onshore oil production and move us in the wrong direction on climate change and environmental justice.

U of M human subjects reform: Don't let foxes guard the henhouse
The Board of Regents’ record on oversight does not inspire confidence. The University of Minnesota has recently received two external reviews of its practices concerning the protection of human subjects participating in medical research. The resulting reports identified many substantive problems both in how the university conducts and oversees human subjects research and in how administrators have responded (or more often failed to respond) to concerns about ethical breaches in medical research.
Environmental Inequalities
Think back to the movie Erin Brockovich. The basic plot, based on a true story, goes like this: A woman with no legal training learns that many residents in a small town have gotten cancer due to exposure to contaminated groundwater. After investigating a large factory believed to be responsible for the contamination, Brockovich proceeds to kick ass. She files a lawsuit against the company, bringing justice to the sick families. It’s the perfect drama-filled Hollywood plot.
