A court will decide the future of Yuraygir’s feral horses. That matters for native plants and animals
From poems to films and books of history, horses feature widely in Australian popular culture. Feral horses, also known as brumbies, are descendants of domesticated horses that now live and breed independently in the wild. For some people, these horses are a cherished part of Australia’s cultural heritage. For others, they represent a major threat to the environments they inhabit.

Organising (and writing) alternatively
From the outset this book departs from academic convention; it speaks directly to readers, to engage them in the key questions that motivate it: How can we organise alternatively within the context of neoliberal capitalism and what is the role of academics in relation to this? Alakavuklar brings himself very explicitly into the text, which is a detailed ethnography of a ‘Free Food Store’ in New Zealand.
Transcriptomic profiling and machine learning uncover gene signatures of psoriasis endotypes and disease severity - Communications Medicine
Abstract Despite increased understanding of psoriasis pathogenesis, molecular classification of clinical phenotypes and disease severity is poorly defined. Knowledge gaps include whether molecular endotypes of psoriasis underlie distinct clinical phenotypes and the positive and negative molecular regulators of disease severity across tissue compartments.

Conceptual Knowledge Shapes the Neural Representations of Learned Faces in Non-Visual Regions of the Brain
face memory naturalistic recognition Significance Statement The ability to recognize faces relies on the depth of processing during encoding, not just perceptual exposure. Associating faces with conceptual information enhances recognition by fostering deeper processing. However, the neural level at which this occurs remains unclear.

A Data-Driven Analysis of the Perceptual and Neural Responses to Natural Objects Reveals Organizing Principles of Human Visual Cognition
Discussion We employed a data-driven approach to reveal key organizing principles governing the representation of natural objects in the human brain. Using data from the THINGS initiative (Hebart et al., 2019, 2023), we constructed a neural encoding model based on PLSR which identified a small number of components explaining the neural response to objects. These components exhibited continuous graded representations across the cortical surface and bilateral symmetry.

Acaricidal Biominerals and Mode-of-Action Studies against Adult Blacklegged Ticks, Ixodes scapularis
Abstract : Ticks in the USA are the most important arthropod vector of microbes that cause human and animal disease. The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, the focus of this study, is able to transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease in humans in the USA. The main approach to tick control is the use of chemical acaricides and repellents, but known and potential tick resistance to these chemicals requires the discovery of new methods of control.
Multi-omic features of oesophageal adenocarcinoma in patients treated with preoperative neoadjuvant therapy - Nature Communications
Abstract Oesophageal adenocarcinoma is a poor prognosis cancer and the molecular features underpinning response to treatment remain unclear. We investigate whole genome, transcriptomic and methylation data from 115 oesophageal adenocarcinoma patients mostly from the DOCTOR phase II clinical trial (Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry-ACTRN12609000665235), with exploratory analysis pre-specified in the study protocol of the trial.
ABPI response: Prioritising patients in negotiations over drug pricing
Dear Editor, The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) welcomes views on how a future Voluntary Scheme can best support patients, while also balancing the needs of the NHS and the industry to ensure sustainable provision of branded medicines. Forrest and Naci’s article does not sufficiently consider this. There is no risk that the NHS will ‘overpay’ for medicines. All new medicines and licence extensions are rigorously evaluated by NICE to ensure they are value for money.

Feral horses will rule one third of the fragile Kosciuszko National Park under a proposed NSW government plan
The New South Wales government has released a draft plan to deal with feral horses roaming the fragile Kosciuszko National Park. While the plan offers some improvements, it remains seriously inadequate. Feral horses trample endangered plant communities, destroy threatened species’ habitat and damage Aboriginal cultural heritage — all the while increasing in numbers. The draft plan would keep many horses in the national park, locking in ongoing environmental and cultural degradation.

Guest editor David Watson, CEO at Ohme, believes data must drive the UK's transition to electric vehicles
Futuristic, exclusive and expensive, electric vehicles (EVs) have gained a reputation over recent years of being accessible only to the elite. Today, the barriers to adoption are tumbling down. From government tax incentives to shrink upfront costs to smart charging technology which brings down running expenses, there’s no doubt EVs are becoming much more affordable and mainstream.

Learning to Think Like a Planet (Part 1)
The Anthropocene - literally, the Age of Humans. The term entered popular usage as the proposed designation of a new geological epoch generally held to date from the 1950s. But over recent years it has been widely adopted across the social sciences and humanities to signify a transition in human affairs in response to changes in the Earth System triggered by humankind.

Self-compassion, the ‘quiet ego’ and materialism
The research is an investigation of self-compassion and materialism. Self-compassion is when an individual has a caring, non-judgmental view of the self. This quality has been related to lower depression, less negative emotion and higher psychological health (Neff, 2003). Materialism has been consistently associated with low subjective well-being and unhappiness.
Mistletoe: the kiss of life for healthy forests

There’s also been some recent discoveries about the role mistletoe plays in boosting biodiversity and improving ecosystem health.
Partners in Cybercrime Fighting
Cyberattacks are estimated to be draining more than US$400 billion a year from the global economy, and that figure is predicted to rise to US$2.1 trillion by 2019. The Bangladesh Bank heist of 2016, which saw US$81 million taken from the central bank’s account, stands as a telling example of the damage that can be wrought.
Why ORP/pH controllers aren't suited to spas
Commercial spas in Western Australia require the use of a chemical controller for automated dosing of chlorine and pH correction. For many years, I have been recommending against the ORP/pH control philosophy in spa installations — a viewpoint which has not been without its detractors. About a year ago, I received a phone call from a pool technician who challenged my view in not supporting his preferred ORP/pH controller.

Ketamine Infusions for Migraine
Sometimes, despite the best treatment, Migraine will not respond. When several common treatments fail, doctors refer to it as refractory Migraine. While not a diagnosis, this is a recognized descriptive term used by Migraine specialists. At headache and Migraine centers, these refractory Migraines can be treated with IV infusions of a variety of medications. One of the newer treatment options is ketamine.
