Child labour numbers rise in homes where adults are jobless - South African study Original
Child labour is a big concern across the world. It is particularly acute in countries in the global south, where it is estimated that about 160 million children are engaged in child labour, about 87 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa. A range of countries have sought to outlaw child labour because it denies children their childhood as well as physical and mental development.
Africa’s ‘youthquake’: huge numbers of young people have no jobs, the wrong skills and little hope
By 2050, one in every three young people on earth will be of African origin, according to the 2024 International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Global Employment Trends for Youth report. Africa’s young people will be key players in the direction of future global consumption, culture and even stability. It’s estimated that by 2050, about 72.6 million new jobs for sub-Saharan Africa’s young people will be needed. The ILO report warns of an African “youthquake” unless the continent creates new jobs.
Jobs in South Africa: the labour market is recovering from Covid - but unskilled and less educated people are still being left behind
For more than three decades the South African economy has had very high rates of joblessness. The country’s economy has been unable to create enough jobs for its growing army of workers. This has partly been because of the stagnant economic growth rate of only 1.7% during the 2010s (it was even lower at 0.9% in 2015-2019).

INDIE GAME DEV: ASSESSING RISK
Sometimes a big risk pays off - we're all familiar with the stories about indie game developers who spent many years turning an unproven idea into a big hit. In many ways, risk is used to the indie creator's advantage - we can make games with themes, mechanics, and aesthetics that big budget studios can't or won't consider, unearthing joy that would otherwise go undiscovered. It's a balancing act, though.

Being a volunteer won't land you a job, but it could improve your chances of getting one
The South African government has implemented numerous economic policies to boost employment since the democratic transition in 1994. But between 1995 and 2022 the growth in employment—from 9.5 million in 1995 to 15.8 million in 2022—wasn't enough to keep up with the more rapid increase of job seekers which more than doubled from 13.7 million to 27.7 million during the same period. As a result, both the unemployment number and the rate increased during the 27-year period.

PIXEL ART: COMMON MISTAKES
What I've done here is create a little scene that looks like a lot of early attempts at pixel art. Don't get me wrong, this type of work can be very charming, which is why I use the term "naive". But it also looks flat and stiff and it lacks readability. Furthermore, part of what I enjoy about art is admiring craftsmanship - the skill and knowledge of the artist at work. Naive art can evoke strong emotions, but I'll always miss the feeling of awe as I marvel at someone's technical mastery.

In South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared that COVID-19 was a national disaster two weeks after the first case of COVID-19 was detected on 1 March 2020. INDIE GAME DEV: GETTING FEEDBACK
Getting feedback is useful in any artform, but you could maybe argue that it's extra important in video games because of their interactivity. Someone may not understand the meaning behind a painting, book, or movie, but it’s pretty hard to soft-lock them! Interactivity also adds so many more possibilities... in a game, each individual player could have a wildly different experience.
what we found at a South African university
Over the last couple of decades, factors influencing the success of first-year university students have been comprehensively studied and researched. These studies focused on a wide range of factors including personal characteristics, school performance specifically Grade 12 (Matric) entry points and school subject choices. The research also considered study characteristics like lecture attendance, tutorial attendance and study hours.
Factors contributing to SA's high unemployment numbers - how to fix it
South Africa's unemployment rate rose to a record high of 34.4% during the second quarter of 2021 - the highest on a global list of 82 countries monitored by Bloomberg. The persistency of the Covid-19 pandemic and its knock-on effects across industries, along with the unrest that took place in July this year which cost the country an estimated R50bn, have set South Africa further on its back-foot.
Still time to comment on national minimum wage adjustment
All parties interested in the annual review of the national minimum wage (NMW) for 2022 have until 1 October 2021 to submit written representations concerning possible adjustments. The Department of Employment and Labour said in a statement that these representations will be considered by the National Minimum Wage Commission before it publishes its annual report, and recommendations on the annual review of the national minimum wage later in the year.
South Africa's labour market trends from 2009 to 2019: a lost decade?
Unemployment remains one of South Africa's most pressing economic and social challenges. Over the past two decades it has also proved to be one of the country's most intractable policy challenges. A plethora of policies and interventions have failed to make a difference. The initial post-apartheid period saw significant growth in employment. But since 2009, employment growth has slowed and both the unemployment level and rate have increased substantially.

South African Internal Migrants Fare Better in the Job Market in Two Regions
Labour migration is an essential - and potentially beneficial - part of all economies, regions and countries in the 21st century. One of the main reasons for migration is to enjoy better employment and earnings prospects. The usual flow of people is from developing to developed countries at the international level, and domestically from rural to urban areas or from poorer areas to richer ones.

Spelunky 2 launches on PS4 September 15
I am very happy to announce that Spelunky 2 is launching on PS4 on September 15, 2020! It feels great to be able to share this news with you… game development is a complex and hard-to-predict process, so it always feels like a minor miracle when we get to this point. Thankfully, our fans have been supportive and patient (thank you!) and Spelunky 2 has been one of the most fun projects I’ve ever worked on, something that I feel is reflected in the game itself. Spelunky 2 is big.
South African banks need to do more to ensure financial inclusion
An analysis of financial inclusion in South Africa shows that affordability limits poor households’ access to formal financial services. In our study, which looked at people’s use of financial goods and services between 2008 and 2015, we found that there was a general increase in use. But this was severely skewed to households with higher incomes. Financial inclusion is broadly defined as the ability of people to access a range of affordable financial services.

INDIE GAME DEV: DEATH LOOPS
In this article, I will identify two traps that many indie game developers fall into that either prevent them from finishing their projects or extend the length of the development to a point where there is tremendous pressure for the game to succeed. I call these traps "death loops" because of the fatigue and burnout they can cause (and how easy it is to get stuck in them). The article will also offer some suggestions on how to break out of these loops.

PIXEL ART TUTORIAL: BASICS
Metal Slug 3 (Arcade). SNK, 2000. Pixel art, also known as dot art in Japan, is a form of digital art where editing is done on the pixel level. It's primarily associated with the graphics of 80s and 90s video games, where commercial artists strained against limited memory and low resolutions to create increasingly eye-catching visuals. These days, it's still popular in games and as an artform in and of itself, despite the possibility of realistic 3d graphics. Why?

South Africa: Employed but Still Poor - the State of Low-Wage Working Poverty in South Africa
analysis By Derek Yu Paid employment is generally considered the predominant and most sustainable way of pulling people out of poverty. But the past two decades have seen a global rise in the complex phenomenon of the working poor. South Africa is no exception. This delink between paid employment and poverty reduction is a major challenge for the government. It means that attention must be given to two things: rapid job creation, and also the creation of decent jobs.
