This is considered a battleground district for control of Congress, and some high-profile leaders are competing for the job. That does not include the congressman representing the current 6th District. As voters recently changed the boundaries under Proposition 50, Congressman Ami Bera is now running in the new 3rd Congressional District.

The choice for voters in the 7th Congressional District has been referred to as a "battle of the ages," as longtime incumbent Congresswoman Doris Matsui is facing a challenge from a fellow Democrat who's half her age. The leading Republican candidate is even younger. At 25 years old, he just meets the Constitutional age requirement to serve in the U.S. Congress.

Voters in California Congressional District 1 have an unusual election year. Some may be voting as many as four times for their representative. The current 1st District was represented by Republican Congressman Doug LaMalfa for 13 years, until his death in January. The special election for his successor is on the same date as the state's Primary Election, June 2. If no candidate wins over 50% of the vote, the top two will advance to a special runoff election on August 4.
