The TARGET guideline for reporting observational studies of interventions
|
Observational (non-experimental) studies of interventions can generate valuable evidence when randomized trials are infeasible, unethical or unable to provide timely answers to important clinical and policy questions. The use of observational data to estimate the comparative benefits and harms of medical interventions has increased substantially and has informed clinical, policy and regulatory decisions1,2.

Journalists play an essential role in interpreting and sharing evidence, even as they too face declining trust and a worsening economic outlook for their industry. To help counter these pressures, researchers must build strong and productive relationships with reporters.
Center-specific causal inference with multicenter trials—Interpreting trial evidence in the context of each participating center - Sarah E. Robertson, Jon A. Steingrimsson, Nina R. Joyce, Elizabeth A. Stuart, Issa J. Dahabreh, 2025
Abstract In multicenter randomized trials, when effect modifiers have a different distribution across centers, comparisons between treatment groups that average (standardize) effects over centers may not apply to any of the populations underlying the individual centers. In the presence of such heterogeneity, interpreting the evidence produced by a multicenter trial in the context of the local population underlying each center may be necessary.

Who Are We Missing?: A Principled Approach to Characterizing the Underrepresented Population
Abstract Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) serve as the cornerstone for understanding causal effects, yet extending inferences to target populations presents challenges due to effect heterogeneity and underrepresentation. Our paper addresses the critical issue of identifying and characterizing underrepresented subgroups in RCTs, proposing a novel framework for refining target populations to improve generalizability.
