I decided to go back to college at 39 - it was something I really wanted to do for myself. No one in my family has ever got a degree. Years before, I almost finished my bachelor's degree, but I ran out of funding, and together with my wife, Regina, I had three children to take care of. Walmart was offering free college tuition, so I said, "This is the time to go for it and accomplish my goal." But I was finding it hard to focus on my work.

I decided to start the Challenge because when I saw the positive changes it caused in my partner. I knew I needed to make my own changes and stick to my better habits, so I was interested in Thrive, and I was finally brave enough to commit. The Microstep that has helped me the most has been to go for a walk in the mornings. Every morning, after finishing my cardio routine, I go to a pool and swim.

In 2020, I left my job with Walmart to take care of my father who had congestive heart failure. He passed away, and a year later, my mom died of COVID-related issues. It was overwhelming. I was an only child and I felt like they'd left me. I was so sad. My coping mechanism was eating. I was a late night snacker - I'd have cookies, candies, and chips. I'm back at Walmart now, but I've been feeling stressed.
