There’s a Bunch of Dinner-Party Décor on Sale at Anthropologie
People often get the itch to overhaul their wardrobes when the seasons change — or at least infuse them with a few fresh items, such as a great jacket or pair of pants. To my mind, your home deserves a little love, too. Of course you’re not going to change out furniture come a new weather pattern, but there is a way to signal a cozy, layered feel with some new décor, and Anthropologie’s Fall Entertaining sale is the perfect place to do it.
What Deb Perelman Can’t Cook Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. In this iteration of our “Celebrity Shopping” column, we’re asking food-obsessed folks what they can’t cook without. Here, Deb Perelman — cookbook author and writer and recipe developer behind Smitten Kitchen — tells us about her favorite items. New! You can now save this product for later.
What Ming-Na Wen Can’t Live Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. We asked actress Ming-Na Wen — whose debut cookbook, Have You Eaten Yet?: Family Recipes from a Restaurant Daughter, just came out — about the false eyelashes, heeled Doc Martens, and Chinese candy she can’t live without. New! You can now save this product for later. I have these on right now.
We Have a New Best Trash Can, and It’s Actually Nice-Looking
Like many people who live in rental apartments, I’ve always had to negotiate where my kitchen trash can lives. Whether finding room for it in a cramped galley-style kitchen or placing it in an unobtrusive but still convenient spot in a more expansive layout, it’s never been the easiest. Without an enclosed cabinet or closet, it’s out in the open — and as such, over the years, I’ve come to realize the importance of it looking as good as possible.
The 6 Very Best Kitchen Utensil Sets
For starting from scratch (or adding to your spatula collection). 13 items in this article 5 items on sale! 13 items in this article 5 items on sale! I’ll be honest up front: It’s difficult to find an absolutely perfect kitchen utensil set with everything you need and nothing you don’t. I built my own collection by acquiring individual pieces over time.
This Naadam Cashmere Sweater Is Only $46 for Prime Day
In the past couple of weeks, a distinct chill has hit the air. Shorts are fully packed away, we’re trading sandals for loafers, and we’re starting to pull jackets from the depths of our closet. If you’re feeling the itch to update some pieces for the new season, consider this cozy cashmere sweater from Naadam that’s very on sale for Prime Day. It has a classic fit with a crewneck, straight sides, and a hem that hits at the hips.
The Best Gifts for Every Type of Home Cook
39 items in this article 13 items on sale! 39 items in this article 13 items on sale! I count myself in the very group of people this gift guide is intended for: an avid home cook who has a lot of gear and very particular taste. And I’ve also spent the last few years talking to countless professionals and trying out dozens (and dozens) of the latest tools, appliances, and ingredients myself.

What Danny Meyer Can’t Live Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. We asked Danny Meyer, the chef, restaurateur, and author of the just-published What Could Possibly Go Right?, about the reading glasses, wine-foil cutter, and fried peanuts he can’t live without. New! You can now save this product for later. $12 I stopped drinking drip coffee about three and a half years ago.
Eat Your Advent Calendar
Advent calendars come in many forms — but my favorites contain food. There’s something that just makes sense about opening a tiny box or drawer every night in the lead up to Christmas and finding a little treat you can eat. Here are all my favorites I’ve found so far, with something for everyone. There are, of course, many sweets, like fancy bonbons and sour candies and hot chocolates. There are also snacks you can enjoy in the moment, like popcorn for movie night or tea to wind down.
What Peter Som Can’t Cook Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. In this iteration of our “Celebrity Shopping” column, we’re asking food-obsessed folks what they can’t cook without. Here, Peter Som — fashion designer and author of the cookbook Family Style — tells us about his favorite items. New! You can now save this product for later.
Caraway Made an Entirely Plastic-Free Coffee Maker — and It’s Really Good
A little over a year ago, my colleagues and I wrote a series of stories about how to reduce plastic use in the kitchen. Specifically, senior writer Michael Zhao investigated all the ways to brew coffee that don’t involve said material. Most of the options he laid out were plastic-free models for countertop brewing, including pour-over and French press, or plastic-free models for stovetop coffee-making, such as percolators and moka pots.
10 of the Very Best Coffee Makers
For a solid, fuss-free way to caffeinate at home. There are a lot of ways to get your caffeine fix: espresso machine, pour-over, French press, moka pot. But my preferred method is a classic coffee maker — something that’s quick-brewing, simple to use, and produces multiple cups in one go.
9 of the Very Best Waffle-Makers
A waffle-maker is, in my mind, a luxury — a piece of kitchen equipment that doesn’t have the multiple uses of, say, a blender, or the everyday nature of a coffee machine. But what’s become clear to me is that if you’re a waffle person, you’re an enthusiastic waffle person, and a quality iron is just as much of a necessity as any other appliance.
Stir-Fried Noodles, Revived Leftovers: My Week With Muji’s Electric Grill Pot
I don’t, for the most part, love to cook with multipurpose electric appliances. While I understand that a good rice cooker, air fryer, toaster oven, pressure cooker, and the like can bring efficiency and precision to the kitchen, I’m a pot-on-the-stovetop kind of person. I simply enjoy using basic cookware (and don’t have ample space to keep a ton of appliances around).
8 of the Very Best Cookware Sets
You want to curate a mix of types and materials (without going overboard). My well-rounded cookware collection — composed of many of the pieces you’ll find on this list — is essential to my success in the kitchen. Using the wrong pot or pan could result in burning, uneven cooking, ingredient overflow, sticking — the list goes on. And while you could build a kitchen arsenal piece by piece, the more cost-effective route, I’ve found, is to buy pieces in a set.
What Olivia Tiedemann Can’t Cook Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. In this iteration of our “Celebrity Shopping” column, we’re asking food-obsessed folks what they can’t cook without. Here, Olivia Tiedemann — private chef, founder of the kitchenware brand Twin Birds, and author of her just-released debut cookbook, Eat (Like) the Rich— tells us about her favorite items. New! You can now save this product for later.
The 12 Very Best Sheet Pans
If you were forced to pare down your kitchen supplies to include only the bare minimum, sheet pans would make the cut. In my case, many sheet pans: I have nearly ten and pull one out almost every day, often multiple times a day. I’ve been known to make a big batch of granola to eat for breakfast throughout the week, and to crisp up bacon on the weekend (way less mess than frying in a skillet).
I Tried to Find a Lunch Box Befitting a Working Adult
Lugging lunch from home to work every day looks different for different people. Some work in offices that have utensils at the ready. Others need to bring everything themselves. Some have the ability to heat food up in a microwave. Others do not. Some meal-prep composed salads they don’t want to get soggy, or perhaps require various vessels for snacks. Others simply eat leftovers from last night’s dinner, all piled into a single compartment, and call it a day.
What Carla Lalli Can’t Cook Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. In this iteration of our “Celebrity Shopping” column, we’re asking food-obsessed folks what they can’t cook without. Here, Carla Lalli — chef, writer, and author of the just-released Food Is a Feeling, her third cookbook — tells us about her favorite items. New! You can now save this product for later. I think these are the best frozen ramen noodles you can get.
New Stuff Alert: So Many Stripes
For this week’s Don’t Dillydally, we’ve rounded up a range of newly released products we’re particularly excited about, including plenty of knits for the turning weather, an NYC subway-themed nightlight from Only NY, and Breville’s new high-tech toaster that toasts to color instead of time. New! You can now save this product for later. This cozy sweater, complete with a perfect arm detail. New! You can now save this product for later. A high-tech Breville toaster.
More Than 30 Percent Off Staub and Le Creuset, and Other Labor Day Kitchenware Deals
As we approach the long weekend, the Labor Day sales are up and running. Here, I’ve curated the best of the best in my area of expertise: the kitchen. I scrolled through many sites, both those for direct-to-consumer brands like Made In and Misen, which have a lot of great stainless-steel cookware marked down, as well as retailers like Williams Sonoma, which offer a wide range of items.
Our New Favorite Handheld Milk Frother Does More Than Just Froth
I enjoy a perfectly made latte as much as anyone. But I don’t care enough to become an espresso-grinding, shot-pulling aficionada in my own home. At the end of the day, I’m not overly fussy: Give me a well-built electric coffee maker with one button, and I’m good to go. Still, I understand the appeal of coffee-making rituals, and over the years in this job, I’ve actually tested quite a bit of gear.
What Meredith Hayden Can’t Cook Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. In this iteration of our “Celebrity Shopping” column, we’re asking food-obsessed folks what they can’t cook without. Here, chef, host, and author of The Wishbone Kitchen Cookbook Meredith Hayden — who recently partnered with Barilla on its new Al Bronzo organic radiatori — tells us about her favorite items. New! You can now save this product for later.
Beast Made a Plastic-Free Personal Blender — and It’s Great
I’ve reduced much of the plastic in my kitchen over the past couple of years. I’ve thrown out nearly all my plastic food-storage containers and built up my collection of glass and silicone ones. I’ve stopped using traditional nonstick skillets and instead opt for ceramic. I no longer have any plastic cutting boards. And I’ve replaced any remaining plastic cooking utensils with versions made from other materials like wood and silicone.
My Hunt for a Small-Space Entryway Cabinet
My apartment is set up such that you walk through the front door and into a loosely defined entryway that’s sizable but not especially useful. The area is fully open, with a set of stairs at the back and flanked by the living room to the right and the dining room and kitchen to the left. This means there’s minimal wall space. In fact, the only wall space is right next to the door, where I have hooks for coats and, underneath that, a slim shoe rack.
The Best Blenders for Those Low on Counter Space
Space-saving machines for smoothies, dips, dressings, and more. While I own a magnificently powerful Vitamix, I rarely pull it out since I’ve started testing personal blenders. Unless you make smoothies for your whole family and big-batch dinners on the regular, or you rely on an extra-strong motor to create your own alt-milks and nut butters, a more compact model can do almost everything a large one can.
The Correct Size for a Salad Spinner Is Mini
I’ve been the Strategist’s kitchen and dining writer for five years, which means there’s a constant stream of new appliances and tools coming into my kitchen. I have to be very discerning about what I keep long-term, given the fact that I live in a Brooklyn apartment. I’ve made many design decisions over the years to stretch storage as much as possible.
All the Cleaning Products the Strategist Staff Swears By
50 items in this article 13 items on sale! 50 items in this article 13 items on sale! Every day, we clean: mop up a spill, wipe a counter, wash dinner plates, scrub the shower. It’s an unglamorous fact of life, but nonetheless one the Strategist staff has strong opinions about.
What Ruth Reichl Can’t Cook Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. In this iteration of our “Celebrity Shopping” column, we’re asking food-obsessed folks what they can’t cook without. Here, Ruth Reichl — food writer, editor, and author of the Substack La Briffe — tells us about her favorite items. New! You can now save this product for later. Apple-cider syrup is a very old American product that disappeared during Prohibition.
I’m Going to Let You in on My Secret to Tastier Salads
For as long as I’ve been cooking, I’ve been making my own salad dressings. I know people are busy, and I’m not opposed to pantry assists, but I’ve always been adamant that a quick whisk of a few ingredients is far and away better than anything you can buy off the grocery-store shelf and worth the extra couple of minutes and extra couple of dishes it takes to pull together.
How to Teach Your Kid to Slice, Dice, and Chop, According to Strategist Parents
There’s no one right way to teach your child how to cut with a kitchen knife — though it is a task you should approach thoughtfully. You want to make sure they’re both careful and confident. One method is to have them work their way up progressively, starting with extremely blunt knifelike tools, moving onto something sharper that also has safety measures in place (like, for example, a hand guard and finger dimple), and then finally to real blades.
All Our Favorite Kids’ Lunch Gear
Half the battle of packing school lunch is the food — and the other is the gear. Your kid has needs: Does the bag look cool? Does the tomato sauce touch the strawberries? And you have needs: How annoying it is to clean? Will all the pieces come back? To find the hardest-working bento boxes, insulated bags, thermoses, water bottles, flatware, and more, I turned to the archives and rounded up the standout products we’ve written about over the years.
What Rick Martínez Can’t Cook Without

In this iteration of our “Celebrity Shopping” column, we’re asking food-obsessed folks what they can’t cook without. Here, Rick Martínez, recipe developer, author of the cookbooks Mi Cocina and Salsa Daddy, and writer of the newsletter Sazón, tells us about his favorite items. New! What Hailee Catalano Can’t Cook Without

Here, recipe developer and cookbook author Hailee Catalano tells us about her favorite items. New! You can now save this product for later. These actually have pieces of tangerine in them as well as whole chiles.
I Tried All the Kitchenware at Quince
The majority of kitchenware available to buy at Quince is from other brands, like East Fork dinner plates, Fellow coffee gear, Staub baking dishes, Fortessa glassware, and Mepra flatware. But among its offerings are some original pieces, and given how much we like the stuff from the brand’s other departments (namely its clothes and accessories), I was curious how the items in my area of expertise stacked up. So I called them all in.
It Might Be Time to Grow Your Own Lettuce
By now you’ve heard (or maybe you’ve experienced firsthand) that cyclosporiasis — an illness caused by consuming food or water that has been contaminated with feces— is making its way around the country. Basically, the cyclospora parasite gets onto fresh produce via contaminated soil in the ground or via contaminated water that has been used for washing, and people who eat this produce can end up with explosive diarrhea that lasts for weeks.
I Found a Plastic-Free Food Container Better Than My Beloved Pyrex
Recently, when I — and a lot of people — began thinking about how to better avoid microplastics in the kitchen, one of the biggest areas I took stock of was my food-storage containers. My cabinet was full of a mishmash of pieces, chief among them deli containers, plus a smattering of glass vessels with plastic lids. Likewise, the Strategist’s recommendation list, culled from many expert cooks as well as testing I had done myself, included containers in a mix of materials.
These 7 Spice Mixes Taste Better Than Everything-Bagel Seasoning
My spice cabinet is bursting at the seams, even as I clean it out regularly. There are my most-used players up front and tons of others as you go deeper. I have jars of standard stuff: cumin, onion and garlic powder, paprika, and quite a few chile powders and chile flakes. I keep dried herbs like oregano, blends like herbes de Provence, classic mixes such as Old Bay and celery salt as well as countless smoky grill rubs, curry blends, and shawarma seasonings. You get the idea.
New Stuff Alert: New Totes From Alex Mill and Baggu
For this week’s “Don’t Dillydally,” we’ve rounded up a range of newly released products we’re particularly excited about, including World Cup–inspired Cold Picnic rugs, Tonieplay’s take on several classic games, and a mini-keychain version of La Bonne Brosse’s fancy hairbrushes. New! You can now save this product for later. New! You can now save this product for later. New! You can now save this product for later. New! You can now save this product for later.
I Finally Found a Sturdy, Lightweight Wooden Cutting Board
Despite having nine cutting boards in my collection, for a long time I felt something was missing. There’s the rubber one I love in terms of how it feels to cut on but don’t love in terms of its material makeup and lack of a moat. The thin plastic-free, plant-based board is a pretty innovative design, though I prefer something heftier.

The Technivorm Moccamaster Is the Best Thing You Can Buy on Prime Day
Every year for Prime Day, the Technivorm Moccamaster goes on sale, and every year I maintain it’s one of the smartest items you can buy. In case you’re unfamiliar, this is both a premium and dead-simple coffee maker. You fill the basket with grounds and click a single button. Still, it’s widely and enthusiastically recommended by many coffee professionals because of its stable temperature control and even brewing — not always what you’ll find with electric machines.
