When Joe Cruz had a car accident in Northern California, burn marks left his face so devastated that he lost the ability to blink. He was in constant pain, frequently needed to apply ointment to his eyes, and could only sleep by rolling his eyeballs into the back of his head. When he consulted with an ophthalmologist in Northern California, the eye doctor recommended eyelid repair surgery. However, because Joe was using Medi-Cal insurance, the doctor would not accept him as a patient.

Ever since Roslymn Caldwell was born, she had eye conditions. What began as a lazy eye in childhood advanced to keratoconus in adulthood and Caldwell was blind for all of her adult life. "My vision was blurry," she said. "It wasn't dark, but gray. I could see the silhouette of your face, but not the details." Her condition destroyed her confidence. She needed someone to drive her, read to her and guide her around her apartment. Caldwell underwent several cornea transplants, but her body rejected each.

by Eric Weintraub In Cha Kim and Atul Dhablania were already strong supporters of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, having endowed the Dhablania and Kim Family Global Medicine Fellowship Fund in 2014, when they became involved with the USC Roski Eye Institute. Atul’s brother-in-law was dealing with diabetes, a condition that had progressed to diabetic retinopathy, a common eye disease among South Asians that can cause vision loss and blindness.
