Mayor-President takes down condemned home, tackles blight in North Baton Rouge

SCOTLANDVILLE - A long-abandoned property on Curlew Street has finally met its end. For years, the home stood vacant after a tree fell on it, leaving it uninhabitable. The property at 730 Curlew St. was condemned in October 2023, and became an eyesore in the neighborhood. On Thursday, the building was torn down—thanks to the efforts of Mayor-President "Coach" Sid Edwards. Mayor Edwards took control of an excavator and began demolishing the house, signaling a fresh start for the neighborhood.

BATON ROUGE — As one of the oldest operating restaurants in the capital city, Dearman's Diner on Jefferson Highway brings something unique to the table — a nostalgic atmosphere and classic flavors. In 1958, William Dearman and his lovely wife opened Dearman's as a lunch counter and pharmacy. The rise of big chain pharmacies steered Dearman's in the direction of becoming a full-service diner, possibly in the late 1990s, owner Casey Evans said.

Anti-gun violence advocate, state representative, says fight more personal after grandson is killed

BATON ROUGE — Anti-gun violence advocate and State Rep. C. Denise Marcelle said her fight has become more personal since her grandson was shot and killed outside a Baton Rouge restaurant Jan. 20. "I just never thought it'd land on my step," Marcelle told WBRZ Tuesday. D'Shawn Brown, 22, was shot and killed in the parking lot of McDonald's at the corner of Airline Highway and Prescott Road.
