Trophic reorganization may contribute to shifts in nitrogen transformations following alleviation of saline alkaline stress
Abstract Soil salinization is a widespread form of land degradation, yet how saline-alkaline stress is linked to belowground micro-food webs and shapes nitrogen transformations remains poorly understood. Here we compare natural saline–sodic and reclaimed farmland soils in northeastern China using microscopy and genetic sequencing. Farmland has higher nematode and prokaryote abundances and greater nematode, protist and prokaryote richness, whereas fungal richness is higher in solonetz soils.

From global AI predictions to city-scale extreme winds
Abstract Rapid advances in global AI weather models offer new opportunities for efficient tropical cyclone prediction, yet their coarse resolution limits direct prediction of urban extreme winds. This study presents an AI-physics hybrid framework that couples five AI weather prediction models with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)-Urban Canopy Model (UCM) for high-resolution city-scale extreme wind prediction. The framework provides skillful track and intensity predictions.
Manipulating Peierls-Nabarro stress to realize extraordinary thermoelectric performance in n-type PbTe
Abstract PbTe is recognized as one of the best intermediate-temperature thermoelectric materials; however, its commercial applications are largely restricted by the comparatively lower performance of its n-type counterpart. Here we show that Peierls-Nabarro stress is manipulated through solute-induced lattice softening, which generates high density helical dislocations, dislocation loops, and subgrain boundaries to block heat transport phonons.

Winning the blue sky defense in China: does energy quota trading curb air pollution?
Abstract The energy quota trading (EQT) pilot is a market-based tool for promoting efficient energy allocation. While studies have examined the energy-saving and carbon-reducing benefits of the EQT pilot in China, few have explored its effects on pollution control. As such, our study investigates the effect of EQT on urban air pollution by employing the difference-in-differences (DID) approach and using panel data for 284 Chinese cities from 2013 to 2020.

The hidden role of rhizospheric viruses in promoting nitrogen fixation in soils
Abstract Biological nitrogen fixation is a cornerstone of terrestrial nitrogen cycling, traditionally attributed to bacterial nitrogenase activity. However, the potential contribution of rhizospheric viruses remains largely unexplored. Here, we reveal the global distribution of nitrogen-fixing genes, with widespread detection of nifA, nifL, nifU, and nifH in both bacteria and viruses, and identify nifU as a viral auxiliary metabolic gene (AMG).
Predator-driven microbial feedback loops promote plant health
Abstract Top-down trophic interactions are major drivers of microbiome dynamics, yet their outcomes are difficult to predict and their consequences for pathogen control remain unclear. We combine synthetic bacterial communities of varying complexity with field studies and microcosm assays to test whether microbivorous nematodes reorganize microbiomes to suppress soilborne disease.

Abstract The development of oxygen electrodes with sufficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, as well as good tolerance to contaminants, is crucial for promoting the commercialization of reversible solid oxide cells (Re-SOCs) technologies. Herein, we design and synthesize a medium-entropy oxygen electrode with a formula of Pr0.5Ba0.2Sr0.2Ca0.1CoO3-δ (ME-PBSCC).
New talent policies and corporate ESG performance: Raising awareness of unintended institutional effects
ABSTRACT The global ‘war for talent’ is intensifying, but its potential unintended consequences remain insufficiently examined. Chinese cities are pursuing talent-driven development strategies and have introduced a series of distinctive new talent policies. Drawing on a quasi-natural experiment exploiting the staggered introduction of talent policies across Chinese cities, we find that corporate ESG performance declines significantly following policy implementation.
Robust stochastic orders and applications to elliptical distributions under parametric ambiguity
Abstract Stochastic orders provide a powerful method for comparing random variables based on their distributions, extensively studied by many scholars. However, in reality, it is often difficult to obtain the true distribution of a random variable due to data limitations. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel concept of robust stochastic order, where the distribution of the random variable is estimated within a family of distributions.
Athlete-derived extracellular vesicles protect against spinal cord injury via inhibition of neuronal ferroptosis
Abstract Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes high morbidity, disability, and mortality, while current surgical and pharmacological treatments provide limited benefit. Ferroptosis, a newly recognized form of regulated cell death, contributes critically to SCI pathology, and targeting this process may enhance neuronal survival. Extracellular vesicles, key mediators of intercellular communication, are emerging as promising therapeutic agents for central nervous system injury.
