Commentary: Building community through poetry.
But a working poet can change our city and the world by building community at the grassroots level, not working against our federal government. Anti-democratic forces within the government are disparaging and demonizing diversity, criminalizing immigrants and selectively excluding minorities from exercising their voting rights.

Will our water be safe to drink?
Hundreds of neighbors protest plans to build wastewater plant Original
"Will our water be safe to drink?" It's the biggest question on the minds of the 200-plus people that showed up to a public meeting held by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Some residents wore shirts with the words, "Save Our Aquifer. Don't Contaminate Our Water" or "Just Say No to Poop in Our Creek!" With support from environmentalists like the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance, a petition has began to stop the development by Lennar Homes.
Commentary: The Prickly Pear in T.S. Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’
Fernando Esteban Flores, For the Express-News Oct. 24, 2022 This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate One hundred years after T.S. Eliot’s disconcerting poem “The Waste Land” was released in October 1922, we still find ourselves staring uncomfortably at our fractured, prickly selves. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948, Eliot dedicated his poem to Ezra Pound with the dedicatory line “il miglior fabbro”— the better craftsman.

Fernando A. Flores’ 'Valleyesque' is a border trip to remember
Fernando A. Flores seems to understand these transactions, and they inform his collection of stories, “Valleyesque.” The book is dedicated to “the RGV exiles, and exiles living in the RGV,” the Rio Grande Valley. It’s an enigmatic line but one so knowable to those of us from these spaces, ever on the fringes that become the center of all things. This is a book that defies easy, canned superlatives.

Commentary: Instapoetry is but the continuation of poetry
What to make of the digital instagram poetry craze? Instapoetry reflects the times, perhaps even part of the zeitgeist of the age. Instagram poems are conversational, which certainly makes them appealing and relatable. The work is undoubtedly “instapoetry” and “infotainment.” It is quick, clear, easy to access, facile, trendy, void of abstracts or obscure references — while providing catchy conflict resolutions when necessary.

Bouncing Back After Not Passing the Bar Exam
A message to those who did not pass the bar exam: my heart goes out to you. I failed the bar exam as well. I remember inputing my bar examinee number to get my results and after I hit enter, I got the dreaded words “Your name does not appear on the pass list.” I felt gutted. My family saw my pain first-hand, they were with me when I found out, and there was nothing they could do about it. I felt pain, disappointment, and a slew of disheartening emotions. I had put in so much time, effort, and energy.
Understanding the awesome power of the Muse
Understanding the awesome power of the Muse Lauren Caruba’s article refers to the governing metaphor common among artists — namely, the Muse. To those unfamiliar with the Muse allusion, it’s important to understand the inherent power of creativity associated with it. As a controlling metaphor it can be a spiritual force, a tangible reality or both.
