Jonathan McDowell of Cranston will play the title role. “I felt drawn to it,” he said.

Is China Dominating The BRICS Group?
When leaders of the BRICS group of large emerging economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – meet in Johannesburg for two days beginning on Aug. 22, 2023, foreign policymakers in Washington will no doubt be listening carefully. The BRICS group has been challenging some key tenets of U.S. global leadership in recent years. On the diplomatic front, it has undermined the White House’s strategy on Ukraine by countering the Western use of sanctions on Russia.

Community Players presents 'Mamma Mia!'
PAWTUCKET – Terry Murray was asked to direct “Mamma Mia!” at the Community Players in Pawtucket a couple of years ago, and then COVID hit. “When they opened up their season,” said Murray recently, “they said let’s go for it.” “Mamma Mia!” tells the tale of Sophie, a 20-year-old living on a Greek island with her single mom and preparing for her wedding. She doesn’t know who her dad is, but after reading her mom’s diary entries from two decades ago, she’s narrowed down the possibility to three men.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place: India’s Stance on the Russia-Ukraine Crisis – South Asian Voices
On March 2, for the third time in less than a week, India abstained from voting against Russia at the United Nations to denounce Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. In an explanation of its vote, India supported the international community’s call for a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, reiterated its belief in the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states, and stressed the need for diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the crisis, but stopped short of condemning Russia.
Trinity gives 'breathtaking' version of 'A Christmas Carol'
PROVIDENCE – I spoke with Joe Wilson after Trinity Repertory Company's first preview of this year’s “A Christmas Carol.” “It went really well,” said Wilson, who’s at the helm of this year. “The cast is terrific, and this is a very beautiful show. And the audience is happy to be back. They greeted us with great generosity enthusiasm.” Wilson, a veteran of Trinity Rep, has worked to make this year’s “Carol” reflective of the current state of the world. “We reflect the elephant that’s in the room.
O'Donnell: Lyles Smith is Oregon City's best choice for mayor
Former commission president 'comes prepared; her thought process and logic are solid, and her decisions are based on fact and concern for this community.' Rachel Lyles Smith is simply the best choice for the job. You deserve to know why I say this.
Elected officials need to look out for Oregon City residents
Frank O'Donnell, who was elected in 2016 to the City Commission, is running for reelection I'm a believer in plain talk — tell it as it is. The last four years, I've stayed true to my guiding principle — to look out for the people of Oregon City who have chosen to make their homes here and to raise their families in this community. It hasn't always been easy. I have shared in your frustrations, but we have also won many victories, large and small.
Why city commissioners support recall of Mayor Dan Holladay
Frank O'Donnell: Oregon City can 'heal, regroup and refocus on the community we wish to be' {img:290983The first duty of any government, national or local, is to provide for the safety and welfare of its citizens — not only their physical safety but their welfare by providing a setting where they can go about their lives, raise their families and earn a living in a safe and prosperous setting.
Oregonians stand strong throughout tough year
Oregon City Commissioner Frank O'Donnell: I'm proud of our communities and proud to be one of you in this place we call 'home.' It's been a tough year, first with the COVID virus, and now with widespread fires. We've suffered losses of both our loved ones and precious possessions, including our homes. We've seen a small amount of people at their worst, but a great number of our people at their best — giving, caring, sharing.

U.S. anti-missile cyber defense could be less effective than claimed
Why it matters: Pre-emptive U.S. cyberattacks on conventional and nuclear missiles, and their supportive command-and-control and targeting systems, are at the heart of the U.S. defense strategy against China. But if the Pentagon is still obtaining only “mixed results” from the same kind of disabling cyber operations with North Korean missiles, which are less sophisticated than China’s, U.S. defense capabilities in this area might be less effective than advertised.
Stabilizing Sino-Indian Security Relations: Managing Strategic Rivalry After Doklam
The Doklam standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in the summer of 2017 coincided with an ongoing deterioration in bilateral relations, and accelerated pre-existing military competition. Frank O’Donnell provides a detailed analysis of Indian and Chinese nuclear and conventional ground force posturing, and illustrates darkening rival perceptions of these actions and their underlying strategic intentions.
Stabilizing Sino-Indian Security Relations: Managing the Strategic Rivalry After Doklam
Summary The Doklam standoff between Chinese and Indian troops in the summer of 2017 coincided with an ongoing deterioration in bilateral relations and accelerated preexisting security dilemma dynamics. China’s and India’s respective military postures, and the perceptions these developments engender on both sides, indicate a path forward. These nuclear rivals should take steps to stabilize their relationship and reduce the chances of conflict.

One overlooked method of stopping opioid addiction before it starts
It is just common sense: As with most diseases, preventing opioid addiction is a lot better than treating it. In May, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the new FDA Commissioner, declared the opioid epidemic his first and highest priority. And on his official blog, he has cited data unequivocally establishing prescription opioids as the main cause of opioid addiction. These medications are also gateway drugs: Some 75 percent of heroin users in treatment began their addiction with prescription opioids.
‘Miss Saigon’ has something for everyone
A Tuesday night in Woonsocket. Not much going on outside the Stadium Theatre. But inside, a very energetic bunch is getting ready to rehearse “Miss Saigon.” “It’s our first time doing the second act off-book,” says Becca Donald, who’s directing the show for the Encore Repertory Company. That means the show’s at a point where the actors should be able to work without scripts in their hands. Mark Colozzi, the show’s music director, gathers the cast together.

Frank O'Donnell's New York marathon
It was Friday 17 May this year that my wife Clare Smith went to the Western General Hospital for what she thought would be a routine check-up. Five hours later she re-emerged into the light with the life-changing news that she had cancer. No test results were required. The doctors said they were certain what they were dealing with. Her mother, Isabel, died of breast cancer when Clare was just 28. Now, ten years on, she faces a similar battle. Clare cried. And cried some more.

EPA science manager: 'I feel like we failed' on smog update because of oil industry's political clout
Here is a brief excerpt of an excellent story in the April 22, 2013 edition of Bloomberg BNA Daily Environment Report.
How utilities plan to continue evading toxic air pollution controls
Cross-posted from the Wonk Room. As federal authorities struggle to deal with the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, it is probably useful to remember that power companies continue poisoning water bodies throughout the nation. The power industry’s successful campaign to sidestep toxic pollution controls has left a legacy of poisoned rivers and lakes.
Lisa Murkowski’s bid to become a climate outlaw
Cross-posted from Wonk Room. Why is Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) behaving like an outlaw? It’s jarring to learn that Sen. Murkowski wants to take away U.S. Environmental Protection Agency authority to limit greenhouse gas emissions from oil refineries, coal-burning power plants and other smokestack industries.
