When I enrolled in medical school, I considered myself an atheist. While I found the study of the human body fascinating on scientific grounds, it was harder to keep those deeper questions about the meaning of life at bay when I found myself dealing with life and death on a daily basis. I could see that many of the patients I was assigned to were facing the end of their lives, and that our medical interventions were unlikely to save them for long.

This year’s New Orleans Book Festival provides an opportunity to ponder some of society’s most relevant science and technology topics: CRISPR gene-editing technology, the relationship between religion and science and the ethical challenges of the AI boom, among others. Book Fest spans three days from Thursday, March 27 to Saturday, March 29. Moderated discussions with authors begin on Friday, and both days will see several science and technology-relevant authors.
