The switching has started. Teams that began with ChatGPT moved to Claude when Projects arrived. Others went back when GPT-5.5 landed or now Codex. Some are testing Gemini’s workspace integrations, or running open-source models locally. Every few months, a new capability or a new pricing change pulls people toward a different platform, and each time, the accumulated context and institutional knowledge stays behind. This movement will accelerate.

The horse provides the power. The harness determines what you can do with it For the past two years, the AI conversation in family offices has centred on which model to use. Claude or ChatGPT. Gemini or something open-source. Teams trial one, switch to another, compare outputs side by side. The assumption is that the model is the thing that matters. Choose the right one and the work improves. That assumption is increasingly incomplete.

Today, anyone can build, but wiring things up might not be as easy as it looks... There is a natural progression happening with AI that most people don’t see until they’re inside it. You start with a chat. You ask questions, draft documents, summarise things. It feels useful but limited. Then you go deeper. You discover that the tool can work with files, write code, build interfaces, connect to databases. Suddenly you’re not just asking questions. You’re building something.
