Congress should step up to protect election officials | Opinion
OPINION Tim Roemer and Fred Upton May 25, 2026, 7:00 p.m. ET to hear this story Last fall, a man attempted to set fire to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home while he and his family were inside. Throughout the last year, President Donald Trump has also experienced multiple assassination attempts. These incidents underscore a troubling reality: elected officials are facing growing threats of political violence.
Political News and Conservative Analysis About Congress, the President, and the Federal Government
AMERICA’S CHINA SPY PROBLEM Anthropic followed with its own accusations: DeepSeek, along with Moonshot AI and MiniMax, had generated over 16 million exchanges with its Claude system through roughly 24,000 fraudulent accounts. The goal was to siphon off the reasoning, coding, and tool-use abilities that American labs had spent billions of dollars developing. The White House has taken notice.
FCC should free broadcasters from old, arbitrary restraints on ownership Original
The same year Facebook launched, Congress and the FCC set an arbitrary 39 percent cap on household reach for television broadcasters. Such ownership limits were created before Twitter, Instagram, Spotify or YouTube had even launched. There were no iPhones or streaming services at that time. This regulation was spawned in an era when access to information was far more limited than it is today. Two decades later, the situation is very different.
All Americans deserve quality legal support — enter the Legal Services Corporation Original
In our years representing communities across the country, from rural Michigan to the Florida coast, from Greater Boston to urban Indiana, one truth held steady: government works best when it meets people where they are and helps them solve real problems. Civil legal services do exactly that. Every day, in every congressional district, Americans face civil legal problems they can’t handle alone — often through no fault of their own. These aren’t partisan issues.
The cost of Trump and Kennedy’s cuts at NIH is already adding up
The cost of Trump and Kennedy’s cuts at NIH is already adding up (washingtonpost.com) The cost of Trump and Kennedy’s cuts at NIH is already adding up By Fred Upton; Diana DeGette 2025041409453000 When Donald Trump accepted the 2024 GOP nomination for president, he included in his speech the importance of American leadership in biomedical innovation. "We're going to get to the cure for cancer and Alzheimer's and so many other things," he said. "We're so close to doing something great.
Bustos, Kind, Upton: Young Germans warn us of a future that echoes their history
Young people overseas are paying close attention to American politics, and they are concerned — not only about us but about the impact on them as well. We are a bipartisan group of former members of Congress, having just left office last year, and we traveled together to Germany where we met with university and high school students in Hamburg, Berlin, Potsdam and Dresden. This program is a part of an organization called Former Members of Congress (FMC) and its Congress to Campus initiative.

We need to talk about Marjorie Taylor Greene and Washington’s broken incentives Original
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) attempt to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has little chance of succeeding. Donald Trump and even Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) have declined to rally to her side. One could argue, then, that the wise course of action would be to ignore it and starve her of the attention she’s clearly seeking. But in this case, that would be a missed opportunity for an important conversation.
Smallpox is still a threat to America, 40 years after its eradication Original
If you’ve watched the HBO miniseries on founding father John Adams, you probably recall the scene in which his wife Abigail inoculates her young children against smallpox by inserting pus from an infected person into their skin. It was excruciating to watch, and was incredibly risky at the time, reminding us just how far vaccine development and delivery have come. The prick of a needle surely beats a slice from a scalpel.
Don't like Trump or Biden? No Labels is working to give you alternative candidate in 2024.
How is that possible in a democratic system where leaders are supposed to reflect the will of the people? We can thank the party primary system, which consolidates power in the hands of the two parties and catapults extreme candidates to the heights of power. The primary system has several attributes that play an outsized role in the extremism that characterizes today’s politics, and all three are on display as the primary process unfolds this year.
Don't like Trump or Biden? No Labels is working to give you alternative candidate in 2024. Original
Only 33% of Americans view President Joe Biden favorably and a mere 29% of Americans view former President Donald Trump favorably. Yet, the two men are poised to be our main choices for president. How is that possible in a democratic system where leaders are supposed to reflect the will of the people? We can thank the party primary system, which consolidates power in the hands of the two parties and catapults extreme candidates to the heights of power.
It's time to step up efforts to maximize the CHIPS and Science Act
Just over a year ago, Congress passed, and the President signed into law, the historic CHIPS and Science Act. While we served for varied amounts of time in Congress, we governed with similar goals in mind: to pursue policies that spur economic growth, support domestic manufacturing and strengthen our national security. We voted for the CHIPS and Science Act because it promised to deliver on these goals.
Upton: The time for a third-party ticket has never been better
Fred Upton | The Detroit News As we reflect back on the recent GOP presidential debate, there was a major missing element — and it wasn’t just former President Donald Trump. It was the lack of bipartisanship required to get things done in the very partisan and toxic environment that is Washington. In fact, during the two-hour food fight among the candidates, Chris Christie and Nikki Haley were the only ones to broach the subject.
Review: A Doll's House
The realism of Henrik Ibsen is a difficult beast to tackle: the exhaustive scenes of wall-to-wall emotional nuance can often be struggled with if done too ambitiously. This is why the production of A Doll’s House at Peterhouse this week, in its restraint of over-ambition in favour of pure drama, was a securely successful interpretation of the Scandinavian script.
Review: Ballyturk
‘I thought we knew everything there was to know’ – these lines from Ballyturk are the antithesis to what most experience when watching the 2014 absurdist play from the mind of Enda Walsh.
Enron - The Cambridge Student
“I believe in God, I believe in democracy and I believe in the company.” If the gross incomes and economic tragedies caused by the foolish juggernauts of the world economy make you want to embezzle all your hopes and dreams like a fearful accountant, then the ADC’s production of Enron will be a brilliant experience. It brings a fresh, new interpretation of a play that – since its last production in 2016 – has become even more relevant in our contemporary climate.

Review: The God Committee
On a cold March night, I had made my way to the ever-elusive Howard Theatre, anticipating a play that I had been eager to see since I first heard about its concept: A dramatic story about ill conditioned healthcare and the fears of an austere response to human life from those unaffected. With a complex script of perfectly tailored chaos, overall, the play gives an enlightening and emotive epiphany of how far Cambridge theatre can really go.
Congress should create national Amber Alert for active shooter cases
Last November we witnessed yet another school shooting, this time at Oxford High School in Oxford, Michigan. It was a traumatizing experience for students and teachers – a situation made even more difficult for parents as they await news, unsure of what is happening and whether their child is safe. An event that scars a community, and leaves those in the surrounding area wondering if they, too, are in danger. Should they stay home? Evacuate?

Let’s build on the successes of Cures Act, Operation Warp Speed
Last December, at the peak of one of the worst public health and economic crises we have faced in more than a century, the eyes of the world turned to southwest Michigan to watch as the first shipments of Pfizer’s life-saving COVID-19 vaccine were packaged into trucks and sent across the country.
Rep. Fred Upton: On Earth Day, we can protect our planet and our economy | Opinion
Climate change is real. Period. It is our responsibility as members of Congress — Republicans and Democrats — to do everything we can to support solutions that address climate change, protect our planet, and support a clean energy transition. Earth Day 2021 reminds us these goals should be a priority, today and every day of the year. But make no mistake. We do not need to sacrifice our economy for our environment.
Upton: Michigan still needs help. Congress must deliver (opinion)
Herman Hiss and Company displays a closed sign due to the coronavirus on their door in downtown Bay City and is seen on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.Kaytie Boomer | MLive.com As the coronavirus crisis continues to unfold, our nation’s families and communities are facing extraordinary challenges that require an extraordinary response. Unemployment is at historic highs, the state of Michigan is facing a $3 billion budget deficit, and thousands of lives have been lost to this vicious virus.
UPTON: Declaring war on the regulatory state
By Rep. Fred Upton - The Washington Times Monday, October 18, 2010 ANALYSIS/OPINION: Our nation is confronted with serious problems that require a fundamental reassessment of the size and role of government. With unemployment near 15 percent in many parts of the country, an unsustainable debt and unbridled federal spending, people fear the actions of a federal government that has grown too large and hinders rather than encourages economic growth.
We're making progress in the opioid crisis, but there's more to do
No community is immune and all too many of us have experienced the devastation and loss firsthand caused by the opioid epidemic. Make no mistake. The opioid crisis cuts through all demographics, races and socioeconomic statuses. Many of us know somebody who’s died. My family too. It’s hard to talk about, but it’s important we do. This is a national issue that will have a lasting impact on so many of us for generations to come. Just look at the numbers.

Democrats need to stop playing politics with our nation’s pipeline safety
OPINION — In 2012, as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I worked with my good friend and fellow Michigander, the late Rep. John Dingell, to reauthorize our nation’s pipeline safety laws. This was in response to a pipeline burst that spilled 20,000 barrels of oil into the Talmadge Creek, a tributary of the Kalamazoo River near my district. It didn’t matter that I had an ‘R’ next to my name and John had a ‘D’ next to his.
We need to reauthorize the nation's pipeline safety law
ANALYSIS/OPINION: Before I was elected to Congress in 1986, I worked for President Reagan and learned the importance of finding bipartisan solutions to the challenges facing the nation. President Reagan worked across the aisle with the Democrats who held the House throughout his entire presidency. He always fought for what was right — regardless the party.
Opinion: We must renew respect for other perspectives
Debbie Dingell and Fred Upton Published 10:18 p.m. ET May 30, 2019 This week, leaders from across our state are gathered on Mackinac Island for the annual Detroit Chamber policy conference. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addresses a Joint Meeting of Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, April 3, 2019, having been invited by the bipartisan leadership of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Republicans Have Better Solutions to Climate Change
Climate change is real, and as Republican Leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, we are focused on solutions. A serious, solutions-oriented discussion about how to address this challenge, while protecting the interests of the American people, our communities, and our country’s economic well-being is fundamental to getting this right. America’s approach for tackling climate change should be built upon the principles of innovation, conservation, and adaptation.
Honor blind veterans by advancing vision-restoring treatments
As Veterans Day approaches, we can expect to see news reports featuring wounded warriors in rehabilitation, learning how to use their new prosthetic limbs. These scenes are heartrending and hopeful. But not often shared are reports about veterans who don’t see — the who have suffered visual impairment and the 130,000 who have returned home legally blind after serving their country in warfare that often has barbaric consequences.
Tax Reform is working For Michiganders
Next week, our country honors the men and women who work hard every day to provide for their families and get the job done. Also, across the state, families are sending students back to school to pursue another year of education that will help them develop the knowledge and skills needed to secure a job following graduation. That’s why we have supported legislation that lets hardworking Michiganders keep more of their own money and empowered new learning opportunities for students.
Column: No nuclear waste near Great Lakes
In Michigan, we know the value of our precious and finite natural resources. The Great Lakes account for more than 20 percent of the word’s freshwater supply — providing drinking water for millions of people and supporting our economy, jobs and our way of life.
Column: ‘Opportunity Zones’ on their way
As part of the landmark reform of our outdated tax code, a bipartisan provision was included that I championed known as Opportunity Zones. Opportunity Zones are economically distressed rural and urban areas eligible for tax benefits aimed at spurring private investment, economic growth and local jobs. The goal of this bipartisan economic development program is to bring long-term, private-sector investment to the places and people who need it most.
Column: Economic progress, thanks to tax reform
At the end of 2017, the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act was signed into law. This historic rewrite of our outdated tax code was met with derision by some, but the truth is that tax reform is working. Across the country, more than 370 companies have announced new investments in their employees and their communities.
Prioritize alternatives to addictive painkillers to fight opioid crisis | Opinion
The numbers are shocking. It’s estimated that more than 1,000 men and women are treated in emergency rooms daily for misusing prescription painkillers. As a nation, we’re spending more than $500 billion annually in health and social costs to combat this epidemic.
Self-driving cars are coming. This legislation will help ensure they're safe
As the North American International Auto Show kicks off this week at the Cobo Center in downtown Detroit, there will be the usual parade of new models, world debuts, panels and press conferences. But there will also be something new in the air. Attendees this year will have the opportunity to experience the latest mobility-focused technologies and innovative platforms, start-ups and suppliers with the addition of the AutoMobili-D.
Column: Bipartisanship a 2018 priority
Last year was a transformational year for American politics — that’s for sure. But one thing was missing: Major bipartisan policy wins for the American people. While Congress did flirt around the edges on some bipartisan goals, I’m hopeful that as we set out on 2018 we can come together and deliver real, bipartisan results for folks here in Michigan and across the country.
Opinion: One Year Later - Why 21st Century Cures Still Matters
Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., left, and Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., hold thank you signs made by Max Schill, who’s diagnosed with Noonan Syndrome, a rare genetic condition, after the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of the 21st Century Cures Act on Capitol Hill in Washington in 2015. Upton and DeGette spearheaded the act.
Rebuilding Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands: Better energy infrastructure is key
We just returned from an eye-opening bipartisan CODEL to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to survey damage caused by hurricanes Maria and Irma, which has been the focus of our work on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Recent developments in the news have, sadly, pushed the subject of the hurricane recovery effort to the margins of most Americans’ awareness.
Guest column: Why a fix for DACA is imperative
Over the last number of months there has been a deluge of interest in a small but important immigration program called DACA. DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and is a policy that allows a number of individuals – approximately 800,000 across the country and thousands here in Michigan – who entered our country as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation.
Michigan deserves tax reform
The last time our tax code was updated was 1986. Since then, it has become a complicated mess with too many special-interest loopholes. We have all heard countless stories from constituents impacted by a tax code that is outdated, unwieldy, and too often rewards special interests at the cost of regular folks. It has become abundantly clear that our outdated tax code is a major drag on our economy and on Michigan families struggling to get by.
Getting the Nation’s Nuclear Waste Disposal Back on Track - Morning Consult
For decades nuclear power has played an important role in generating electricity throughout the country, by accounting for nearly 20 percent of all electricity generated across the United States over the past 30 years. Nuclear power is safe, reliable, emissions-free, and most importantly provides low-cost, affordable energy for consumers around the country. While generating nuclear power sounds daunting, when distilled down to its basic operations it is easily understood.
Interning on Capitol Hill just got a little easier thanks to 'College to Congress'
Summer here in our nation’s capital comes with a few degrees of certainty. It’s going to be hot and humid. Republicans and Democrats aren’t going to agree on everything. And students from across the country will be coming to the city to take part in internships that will enrich their lives and future careers. Interning on Capitol Hill is an experience unlike any other.
Help is on the way in opioid epidemic fight - The Herald Palladium : Editorials
It seems like everyone I meet these days is in some way impacted by the tragic, ongoing opioid abuse epidemic. We see it every day here in Southwest Michigan. The statistics are as startling as they are heartbreaking: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates more than 33,000 Americans died from opioid abuse in 2015, including nearly 2,000 from Michigan. That is 10 times as many deaths because of overdoses as there were 15 years ago. Sadly, these numbers continue to surge.
