Gary Warner’s Biography
I cover the military in the Pacific Northwest for Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent military publication under the Department of Defense. I'm currently based in Eugene, Oregon, with plans to relocate to the Puget Sound area by January 2024.
I started my career on the other side of the political fence as the press secretary for the California State Senate Judiciary Committee in Sacramento.
I moved to journalism, working as State Capital Bureau Chief of The Pittsburgh Press in Pennsylvania, then to The Orange County Register as a reporter and editor on politics, the military and features. Most recently, I covered Oregon politics for EO Media Group.
I've reported from over 60 countries and all 50 states. I was in Berlin in late October 1989 just before the Wall came down. I reported from Moscow, Geermany, South Korea and Vietnam (in 1990s). I was part of the Knight-Ridder-Tribune team that covered Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. I was assigned to Madrid and London during Operation Desert Shield. Storm (in Saudi Arabia), and Desert Shield (in Madrid and London). I've covered three major earthquakes, the LA riots, a pandemic, and the anniversaries of Pearl Harbor and D-Day.
I've worked in radio with a regular segment on KCBS in Los Angeles, appeared on television, created and edited websites, and taught creative writing at UCLA (both in-class and online).
