Unfortunately, Fleury had deeper issues which weren’t completely obvious to those cheering on his grit.
Salary cap could spawn NHL trade frenzy
Matt Niskanen wasn’t totally shocked when the Washington Capitals traded him to Philadelphia last week. General managers say there is more trade chatter now than at any time in recent years, and much of it has to do with a wide gap between the haves and have nots across the NHL.

Longtime NHL ref Kerry Fraser tells story about Theo Fleury challenging him to a parking lot fight
Theo Fleury is a player that is endeared in many hockey hearts. Some still feel nostalgia thinking of his famous celebration, sliding across the ice on both knees, but that’s not necessarily why fans love him. His grit was almost unmatched, and the chip on his shoulder was larger than him. After all, Fleury only stood 5’6. Despite his shorter stature, Fleury would take on just about anyone, and even the bigger guys knew that they couldn’t get a free shot on him just because they were taller.
Manitoba Moose D-man Sami Niku pots one after a fantastic individual effort in the offensive zone
Hockey is a team sport, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t full of individual efforts. Fans love it when a player weaves their way through an entire team and completes the end-to-end with a tally. While Manitoba Moose forward Sami Niku’s effort wasn’t an end-to-end, it was still a fantastic individual showing to somehow find himself with an open shot, one which he capitalized on. It was the first goal of the season for Niku, who has played one game in the NHL as a member of the Winnipeg Jets.

Now that they’re in the thick of a first-round series, tied 2-2 with the Washington Capitals, class is truly in session. The Maple Leafs don’t have the wealth of postseason experience Washington does to draw from, but that hasn’t stopped them from forcing every game in this series to one-goal territory or overtime.
