Criminal trial for Ebony Parker moved to May following lawsuit loss

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Dr. Ebony Parker, the former assistant principal at Richneck Elementary School found grossly negligent in a lawsuit filed by Abby Zwerner, the teacher shot by a 6-year-old student, has had her criminal trial pushed out to May 2026. Originally scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 17, just 11 days after a Newport News jury issued its verdict in favor of Zwerner, Parker will now have a long break before she faces another judge.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — It was a gunshot heard around the world: On the afternoon of Jan. 6, 2023, a 6-year-old student at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News took out a gun he stole from his mother and shot his first grade teacher, Abby Zwerner. The bullet went through her hand and into her chest. Within hours, the news had been picked up by U.S. news outlets, in addition to European and Asian sources. Zwerner, then a 25-year-old graduate of James Madison University, became a household name.

Cory Bigsby to be sentenced Tuesday for murder of son Codi

On Monday, June 17, News 3 will air a half hour of special coverage of the Bigsby case at 5:30 p.m. ahead of Tuesday's sentencing. Cory Bigsby, the Hampton man who was convicted of killing his 4-year-old son, Codi, will be sentenced on Tuesday for the crime. Bigsby was convicted in March of second-degree murder and concealment of a body in connection with Codi's death.
