Editorial: Prediction of Long-Term Complications of Paediatric Liver Transplantation
Advances in paediatric liver transplantation have shifted attention from early post-transplant survival towards preserving long term graft health [1]. Long term surveillance after paediatric liver transplantation relies heavily on serial measurements of liver biochemistry and immunosuppressant drug concentrations [2]. However, routine liver biochemistry may not reliably identify important graft pathology [3].
Suicide Risk Models Are Ready—Our Health Systems Are Not
Suicide is a leading cause of mortality. Effective prevention depends on accurate risk identification.
Dysregulated adult hippocampal neurogenesis in major depressive disorders
|
Abstract Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with reduced hippocampal volume, altered connectivity and negative memory bias, suggesting disrupted hippocampal plasticity. Dysregulated adult hippocampal neurogenesis is a potential contributor, but its relevance in humans and role in MDD remain unclear.

In-Depth characterization of the shared genetic architecture of suicide attempts with other major psychiatric disorders - Translational Psychiatry
Abstract Suicide is a significant public health problem that usually co-occurs with major psychiatric disorders. Suicidal behaviors have heritability of 30–50%, and the largest genome-wide association studies identified 12 loci linked to suicide attempts (SA). These findings indicate shared genetic architecture among SA and psychiatric disorders.
635. Oscillation in a Neural Signature of Deceased-Related Attention Predicts Grief Trajectories One Year Later in Suicide Bereavement
The loss of a loved one to suicide is associated with a higher risk of pathological bereavement. Oscillating between engagement and disengagement with thoughts of the deceased during acute grief is theorized to promote well-adjusted bereavement, but empirical evidence is limited. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and neural decoding to examine whether dynamic fluctuations in deceased-related attention predict future grieving.
Clinical trials since 2020 of rapid anti-suicidal ideation effects of ketamine and its enantiomers: a systematic review - Translational Psychiatry
Abstract Suicide is a global public health problem with few empirically supported treatments. We conducted a systematic review of clinical trials (CT) since 2020 of racemic ketamine or one of its enantiomers’ (R/S) potential to reduce suicidal ideation or behavior (SIB). An initial PubMed search on April 15th, 2024 yielded 2483 results. 104 relevant CTs were identified. An additional search using other search engines on March 19th, 2024 yielded 52 sources.

SHIFT HAPPENS | Kirkus Reviews
A chronicle of the area comprising the present-day U.S. beginning in 1492 and told through the history of the labor movement. Starting with Christopher Columbus—who “fanboyed [Marco] Polo hard” and set out in search of Asia—and moving forward to the union strikes of 2023, Mann explores the often oppressive, abusive, and bloody history of labor conditions and the merciless rise of capitalism with wit, snark, and comprehensive context.
Patterns of Social Determinants of Health and Child Mental Health, Cognition, and Physical Health

Epigenetic regulation in major depression and other stress-related disorders: molecular mechanisms, clinical relevance and therapeutic potential - Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy
Abstract Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic, generally episodic and debilitating disease that affects an estimated 300 million people worldwide, but its pathogenesis is poorly understood. The heritability estimate of MDD is 30–40%, suggesting that genetics alone do not account for most of the risk of major depression. Another factor known to associate with MDD involves environmental stressors such as childhood adversity and recent life stress.
Folic acid prescription and suicide attempt prevention: effect of past suicidal behaviour, psychiatric diagnosis and psychotropic medication
In previous papers we reported that folic acid prescriptions are associated with lower rates of suicidal behaviour.Reference Gibbons, Hur, Lavigne, Wang and Mann1,Reference Gibbons, Hur, Lavigne and Mann2 Suicidal behaviour is usually a complication of psychiatric disorders, of which a major depressive episode is the most common.

Predictors of Suicide Related Behaviors in a Sample of High-Risk Black Youth
Suicide remains a leading cause of death in youth. In recent years, suicide rates have risen disproportionately in Black youth, yet we know very little about risk factors specific to this group or the reasons behind this trend. We sought to identify the role of parental history of suicidal behavior in predicting suicide-related behaviors (SRB) in a sample of Black youth at high risk for suicidal behavior.
Spatial epigenome–transcriptome co-profiling of mammalian tissues - Nature
Abstract Emerging spatial technologies, including spatial transcriptomics and spatial epigenomics, are becoming powerful tools for profiling of cellular states in the tissue context1,2,3,4,5. However, current methods capture only one layer of omics information at a time, precluding the possibility of examining the mechanistic relationship across the central dogma of molecular biology.
Rethinking the medication management of major depression
ABSTRACT Introduction Current treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) warrants critical reexamination. Initial treatment response rates are modest and drop dramatically after 3 months. Meanwhile, MDD is emerging as the leading cause of disease burden worldwide. Areas covered We searched PubMed (up to June 2021) for randomized controlled trials comparing antidepressant combinations versus monotherapy. We discuss findings from these studies in light of current treatment guidelines for MDD.
IN MEMORIAM Barbara H. Stanley Ph.D - Neuropsychopharmacology

Spatial profiling of chromatin accessibility in mouse and human tissues - Nature
Abstract Cellular function in tissue is dependent on the local environment, requiring new methods for spatial mapping of biomolecules and cells in the tissue context1. The emergence of spatial transcriptomics has enabled genome-scale gene expression mapping2,3,4,5, but the ability to capture spatial epigenetic information of tissue at the cellular level and genome scale is lacking.
Altered adult neurogenesis and gliogenesis in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy - Nature Neuroscience
Abstract The hippocampus is the most common seizure focus in people. In the hippocampus, aberrant neurogenesis plays a critical role in the initiation and progression of epilepsy in rodent models, but it is unknown whether this also holds true in humans. To address this question, we used immunofluorescence on control healthy hippocampus and surgical resections from mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), plus neural stem-cell cultures and multi-electrode recordings of ex vivo hippocampal slices.
