Spatiotemporal clonal architecture of the newborn mouse forebrain
Abstract How hundreds of cell types of the mammalian forebrain emerge from a limited set of progenitor cells during development remains largely unknown1,2,3, and studies so far have overwhelmingly focused on the cerebral cortex. Here, to fill this gap, we applied lentiviral barcoding across the major subdivisions of the mouse forebrain: cortex, hippocampus, striatum, thalamus and olfactory bulb.
Connecting single-cell transcriptomes to projectomes in the mouse visual cortex
|
Abstract The mammalian brain consists of diverse neuron types with various functions. Recent single-cell RNA sequencing approaches have led to a whole-brain taxonomy of transcriptomically defined cell types1. Patch-seq experiments augment these cell-type descriptions by linking transcriptomic profiles with local morphological and electrophysiological properties2,3,4,5,6,7. However, linking transcriptomic identities to long-range axonal projections remains a major unresolved challenge.

Book Review: "The Shining Human Creature" & "Made Like the Maker" by Thomas Traherne
The Shining Human Creature and Made Like the Maker. By Thomas Traherne. Modernized by Colin Redemer. The Davenant Institute, 2023. 133 pp and 140 pp. $17.95 each (paper). Thomas Traherne has one of those names that just sounds like he was born as an Oxford poet in a quaint, misty English village. In this case, that association has merit.
Your Online Presence is More Important Than Your Resume
In today’s world, if you don’t have an online presence, then you almost don’t exist. As great as a life of privacy and simplicity may be, if you’re trying to grow your career or escape the rat race, then staying offline probably isn’t the wisest choice. Gone are the days of getting in the door of a profession just because you’ve got an expensive piece of paper. That $25,000 university degree saying you can do something? Yeah, not as valuable anymore.
Travelling Changed My Life, But It Didn’t Solve My Problems
Ask someone on their deathbed what they wish they’d done more of in life, and you’ll usually get the same answer. “I wish I had travelled more.” Travelling the world is often seen as a rite of passage. That thing you do before you begrudgingly join the workforce or settle down with a wife and kids. For some, it’s their ‘last’ chance to bounce between countries, indulge in exotic food, marvel at foreign women and imagine how different their lives could be.
A suite of enhancer AAVs and transgenic mouse lines for genetic access to cortical cell types
|
Keywords epigenetics transcriptomics enhancer cell type neocortex AAV transgenic recombinase mouse human Introduction To understand how the brain works, we need to establish the structure-function relationships between the units that comprise it and the outputs of its activity.1 One approach is to gain experimental access to each building block (e.g., a cell type) and manipulate it to observe effects on an animal’s physiology and behavior.2,3,4 Historically, the definition of building blocks...

Waters: We need to support small-scale sustainable farming
We all know climate change will affect Americans. Rising seas, turbulent weather and rising temperatures are some of our biggest problems to look forward to. Hotter weather isn’t just something in the future, though — it’s already here, as evident by last week’s heat wave. Those heat waves are going to have rippling effects through the US economy, and hurt agriculture in particular.
Waters: Eating locally better supports Lawrence economy
Outside of going to class, there’s a lot to do in Lawrence: parks, museums, entertainment and plenty of local restaurants to choose from. Unfortunately, those restaurants don’t get as much attention from KU students as they should. Chipotle and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop get more visitors than Taco Zone. Dairy Queen and Coldstone get more business than Sylas and Maddy’s. Even Starbucks is more popular than some of the local coffee shops in Lawrence. Outside of Lawrence, local food can be a pretty big deal.
Waters: There's a new form of financial aid. Don't trust it.
College is expensive, but it looks like there might soon be another way to pay that tuition bill. Most students take out loans — about $1.6 trillion in loans are outstanding — or receive scholarships to pay for school, but sometimes that just isn’t enough. Some will take out additional private loans or join the military to be able to afford a college degree — but now, there’s another option.
Waters: Social media used to bring people together. Now it's driving us apart.
In the early days of the internet, social networks were simple. Usenet, Listservs, and BBS systems allowed users to talk and share files over long distances. Those tiny networks quickly grew from hobbyist projects to global systems, servicing people from all over the world — people living in the United States, Japan, Western Europe, and even parts of the Eastern Bloc could all connect with each other. Back then, social networks brought people closer in ways we’d never seen.
The next-gen telco evolution is happening at the edge (Reader Forum)
The future of telecommunications is just as important today as it was when the telephone revolutionized the world. The industry is undergoing a drastic transformation as continued trends toward cloud adoption, mobile communication and big data analytics are driving demand for high-capacity and low-latency bandwidth to meet the needs for these and other emerging applications. The insatiable demand for video and content streaming is driving infrastructure investments in fiber to increase bandwidth.
