Facebook should severely downgrade fraudulent, propagandistic, and unreliable sources of information. We know what high quality journalism is. Facebook should be thinking about how to support it, instead of continuing to damage and undermine it.
Deferring to user preference just exacerbates the filter bubble problem -- people choosing their preferred facts over truthful information. A better solution to FB's fraudulent news problem would involve applying traditional standards and editorial judgment.
Facebook's new news policy seems designed to make the problem worse. Users will tend to vote for whatever news sources confirm their beliefs. But Fox and RT and China Daily don’t become trustworthy just because users - or bots - endorse them.
