UNICEF: One Palestinian Child Killed Weekly in Occupied West Bank
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday that at least one Palestinian child has been killed every week in the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem, since January 2025, the vast majority by Israeli occupation forces.

Israel, please let aid organisations do our jobs in Gaza
Palestinians at a food distribution point in Khan Younis, Gaza, 30 May 2025. Photograph: Anadolu/Getty Images Abed Al Rahman, just a boy, carried the weight of his family’s hunger as he stepped into the streets of Gaza in search of bread. He had his father’s money, but when he saw the tide of people pushing towards a food distribution site in Rafah, hunger pulled him into their flow. Almost immediately, the site descended into chaos. Gunfire. Drones.

An invariant schema emerges within a neural network during hierarchical learning of visual boundaries
Abstract Neural circuits must balance plasticity and stability to enable continual learning without catastrophic forgetting, a pervasive feature of artificial neural networks trained using end-to-end learning (e.g. backpropagation). Here, we apply an alternative, hierarchical learning algorithm to the cognitive task of boundary detection in video clips.
Enhancing selectivity through forced dynamic operation with intraparticle diffusion limitations: Ethane oxidative dehydrogenation
Oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethane (C2H6) to ethylene (C2H4) has long been touted as a promising alternative to conventional ethane steam cracking [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. In contrast to the endothermic cracking, exothermic ODH does not require extensive combustion for heating and in fact can be operated autothermally [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. On the other hand, ODH typically has lower ethylene yields due primarily to CO and CO2 formation.
Sudan: The Bleak Déjà Vu in Darfur
Darfur, Western Sudan — As dawn breaks over Darfur, my return after two decades feels heavy. Many millions are suffering once again. Twenty years ago, I was part of the humanitarian effort to make a difference. That was in the early 2000s, when celebrities and world-famous journalists would make the trek in a well-intentioned effort to focus attention on the atrocities across Darfur. But despite years of progress, this return is difficult; something akin to a bleak déjà vu.

Firsthand Account: No Safety for Children in Gaza
A dystopic scene that seemed to stretch on endlessly Last week, in the city of Khan Yunis, I met 11-year-old Omar and his Aunt Hamida. They were sheltering at the educational facility alongside tens of thousands of other civilians who had been displaced by the horrific violence inflicted on Gaza over the past two months. Omar’s aunt told me quietly that a bomb had struck Omar’s home several days earlier, killing his mother, father and twin brother.
Curvature coding in early visual system revealed by scale variance during adaptation to flashing circles
Abstract How is curvature coded in the early human visual system? This question is the essence of basic shape recognition and may explain why humans are so successful in recognizing objects under difficult and varying environment conditions. The circle-polygon illusion produces polygonal percepts during adaptation when a static dark outline circle is pulsed at 2 Hz alternating with a gradient luminance circle.
Curvature formation in the visual cortex: How do we sample?
Abstract Does the human visual system sample shapes at discrete points? During adaptation when the neurons are fatigued, one observes the underlying principles that were once less prominent than the fatigued features. Operating under deficit, these less prominent features expose the original contributions from the fatigued neurons that are now absent. An underlying lower order neural process, is thus, now revealed.

Single cell and spatial sequencing define processes by which keratinocytes and fibroblasts amplify inflammatory responses in psoriasis - Nature Communications
Abstract The immunopathogenesis of psoriasis, a common chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, is incompletely understood. Here we demonstrate, using a combination of single cell and spatial RNA sequencing, IL-36 dependent amplification of IL-17A and TNF inflammatory responses in the absence of neutrophil proteases, which primarily occur within the supraspinous layer of the psoriatic epidermis.
Therapy in nature
This has been the accepted practice since Freud. No one questions that it works. Being confined with a therapist forces us to confront our issues. To heal. I'm the therapist in those situations but even I'll admit that it's odd. It first struck me just how odd the accepted practice is when I began youth counselling: the last thing a teenager wants is to be stuck in a room for an hour answering questions from an adult. And don't think it isn't awkward for the adult either.
Combining contour and region for closed boundary extraction of a shape
1 Introduction Boundary extraction involves identifying and connecting a set of visual elements such as line edges to form the boundary of an object. Boundary extraction is one of the first, if not the very first operations that the human visual system performs. Given the vast amount of information present in any visual scene, the computations performed by the human visual system must be robust.
Ukraine-Russia war: UNICEF’s James Elder’s reflections one year on from conflict starting
I visited Ukraine four times last year, from the west, to the capital, to near the frontlines, and each time the emotions were raw. Uncertainty about the future, fatigue with the stress, and anger at why it was all happening. Spread across everything was a vast sadness. An aching at its pointlessness. A revulsion at the endless attacks and child rights violations. Pain – wounds of war and invisible wounds – everywhere. Returning this week, my first stop is to the hospital.

OPINION | 'We started walking when the war started': Ethiopian teen yearns to see her father again | News24
Ethopian teenager Merhawit (Supplied) Ethopian teenager Merhawit is clever, eloquent, and brave. She is also displaced by conflict. James Elder details her story. Looking lost and anxious, Merhawit, 16, tiptoes between a dozen women and their babies at a health centre located 100km from Mekelle, capital of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region. Everyone here is looking for some kind of relief.
The Christian and the plague
Christian responses to plague times are nothing new, as historians often credit growth in the early church to its members' responses to the Roman plagues. Offering care, love and kindness to plague victims without showing concern for their own well-being was a powerful example of the self-sacrifice displayed by Jesus Christ (to live is Christ, to die is gain). It is not surprising that many converts were won during these times - Christians were serving others at the risk of death.

Southern Africa: Now Comes the Cholera - Mozambique's Waters of Death
analysis By James Elder Two weeks after Cyclone Idai ripped through Beira, Mozambique, it continues to kill. Now comes cholera. They are some of the unluckiest, saddest, and grisliest stories of death you'll ever have to hear: the father killed by a flying plate; the husband decapitated by corrugated iron roofing; the daughter killed by a tree hurtling across the water. Two weeks after Cyclone Idai ripped through Beira, Mozambique, it continues to kill. Now comes cholera.
OP-ED: Now comes the cholera: Mozambique’s waters of death

EPA-EFE/TIAGO PETINGA Two weeks after Cyclone Idai ripped through Beira, Mozambique, it continues to kill. Now comes cholera. An outbreak was always feared. It was declared on Wednesday. Cholera – spread by faeces in sewage-contaminated water or food – is the disease that can turn a crisis like this into a full-blown catastrophe.

The full story of Michael Gove’s dept and the @ToryEducation account
by James Elder Over the past 18 months, I have been keeping an eye on what’s been going on with Michael Gove and his Special Advisors at the Department for Education. This is a story which, being about the Freedom of Information Act (the gears of which grind slowly), has taken a long time to reach any sort of resolution. Having found that I had lost the plot on the most recent developments, I did a bit of digging and present it all here in one post, for the convenience of others.
