LA County will deploy airport-style scanners, more K9s after juvenile hall overdoses
Los Angeles County will install airport-style body scanners and increase the use of drug-sniffing canines at its two largest juvenile facilities in response to a series of overdoses and the recent arrest of a tutor accused of smuggling in nearly 200 illicit pills. The Board of Supervisors voted 4-0, with one abstention, at its meeting Tuesday, July 8, to scale up the security at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall and the Barry J. Nidorf Secure Youth Treatment Facility to better detect and deter drugs.

Golden Road Brewing Soft-Launches in S.F.
Thursday, April 25, 2013 Beer Golden Road Brewing Soft-Launches in S.F. Posted By Jason Henry on Thu, Apr 25, 2013 at 8:00 AM Golden Road Brewing Golden Road Brewing is doing something right. In the blink of an eye the operation became LA's largest craft brewery, and the first in the area to put their brews in cans. The crew has colonized Los Angeles, garnering a reputation as the fastest growing craft brewery in the country. With SoCal on board, Golden Road is turning its eye to the Bay Area.
St. Vincent Collaborates with Craftsman Brewing, Hosts a Beer Dinner
Those familiar with St. Vincent's beer program know that resident Cicerone Sayre Piotrkowski has a fondness for Pasadena's Craftsman Brewing. In the restaurant's 15 months of operation, at least 25 percent of the draft list has been consistently dedicated to Craftsman brews. Piotrkowski's connection to the brewery has been a blessing for Bay Area beer geeks thirsty for Craftsman's full range of world-class, and often esoteric, beers.
Almanac Beer Debuts Bottles, Parties Hard
We've been waiting with bated breath for the inaugural release from San Francisco's Almanac Beer Co. and our Zenlike patience is about to pay off in a big way. At the end of the month, all 309 cases of the Summer 2010 Vintage Blackberry Ale will be unleashed upon the Bay Area. After an eight-month nap in used wine barrels, this beery collision of a classic Belgian Golden ale with citrus-tinged American hops is ripe for consumption or ready for a long rest in your cellar.
Steep Brew: A Whole Foods Beer Bar
When asked, "what would improve your grocery shopping experience?", we typically reply, "16 taps of fresh craft beer with a local focus." Evidently, Whole Foods Potrero was listening. Friday brings the opening of Steep Brew, a destination beer bar tucked beneath the grocery store at 17th St. and Rhode Island. This is a soft opening, but expect the space to be fully operational. All of the rotating 16 taps can be sampled in flights (four 4oz. pours for $7, three 8oz. pours for $14).
No. 16: Russian River Brewing's Consecration Ale
Most craft brews proudly advertise the same four ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast. The label on Russian River Brewing's Consecration beer, however, boasts of other tongue twisting additions: Lactobacillus, Brettanomyces, and Pediococcus (oh my!). Unbeknownst to many, these wild yeasts ("brett") and bacteria (the "lacto" and "pedio") are responsible for the puckering, funky side of the sour beer world.
Enjoy a Staycation with the 'BRU/SFO' Belgian Beer Month
Everybody seems a little tense these days. With all the worldwide protests and political squabbling, we'd like to pack up a suitcase and go #Occupy the Belgian countryside for a while. Some sugar waffles and a goblet of rich, Belgian ale would do the trick. Well, a boy can dream. Thankfully, the folks at Magnolia and 21st Amendment are coming to the rescue next week. For their 3rd annual 'BRU/SFO'event, Bay Area locals can take a much-needed virtual tour through the world of Belgian brew.
City Beer Store Celebrates Six Years
Fun fact: The platypus is the official mascot of SOMA's City Beer Store. We remember from third grade that these creatures have duck bills, beaver tails, and the feet of otters. Perhaps this creature is an apt metaphor for a beer destination with an identity crisis -- Is it a beer store? Is it a bar? The short answer: Yes. Six years in, and it's clear that City Beer Store hasn't succumbed to any crisis of identity.
The Jug Shop Ushers in a New Year of Beer Tastings
It's only a few days into 2012, but you've been behaving very well. The New Year diet is working, and tonight you'll be gorging on raw carrot sticks, a handful of unsalted almonds, and a tall glass of water. At the end of the week, celebrate the success of your resolution by breaking it in grand fashion. This Friday marks The Jug Shop's first beer tasting of the year.
Pacific Brewing Laboratory Wants to Meet You
In today's culinary landscape, artisan producers are stars. With the surging popularity of craft beer, local brewers are no exception. Much like your favorite band, the folks at Pacific Brewing Laboratory started out in a garage, and are almost always surrounded by mountains of booze. Unlike your preferred hair metal band, however, you don't have to engage in acts of questionable morality to get backstage to meet these guys.
