More than 20 students from five different Indianapolis-area schools spent the week at the University of Indianapolis getting a glimpse of potential future teaching careers. UIndy’s Teacher Prep Academy wrapped up on Friday after a “jam-packed” week where high school students interested in teaching careers got to immerse themselves on campus for a week, said Leah Trost, coordinator of the camp and field and placement liaison for UIndy’s school of education.

Clark-Pleasant Middle School band director named outstanding educator

Clark-Pleasant Middle School’s band director celebrated personal and student wins at a band concert last month. At the school’s spring band concert on May 20, Band Director Katy Briel was awarded the National Federation of State High School Associations’ Indiana Outstanding Music Educator of the Year. Students and staff also celebrated the middle school band earning the Indiana State School Music Association’s All Music Award for the 15th year in a row.

Center Grove’s top students find balance with friendly competition

Center Grove High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian made the top honors a competition between friends this year. Valedictorian Quinn Smith and salutatorian Alexander Fan, along with their other friends, would often spend Friday nights hanging out at Smith’s house. Watching TV in Smith’s basement was a highlight to the year, Fan said, and helped make the challenging times much easier, he said.

Nina Mason Pulliam Environmental Journalism Award

2023 - Environment

“The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust’s interest in the environment has sparked an annual award to be given to Indiana journalists for outstanding reporting on environmental issues. The Nina Mason Pulliam Environmental Award was created through a grant by the Trust to the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation. The winning entry will be recognized at the Better Newspaper Contest Awards Luncheon and receive a prize of $1,000. The reporter or reporting team who authors the winning article also will be registered for the national Society of Environmental Journalists conference and receive travel assistance to that event.”
