FARGO — A packed house is expected for the Jacksonville State at North Dakota State season opener on Saturday afternoon, with fans coming from far and wide. That includes George Okamatsu, who may have traveled the farthest and widest. The former NDSU student trainer living in Shiga, Japan, didn’t want to miss out on the school’s first FBS game, set for 4:30 p.m. at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. It’s his first trip back in 10 years, arriving in Fargo on Wednesday and leaving on Monday.

FARGO — Jacksonville State for the first time in program history will travel from Alabama to the state of North Dakota on Friday, with the season opener set for Saturday at North Dakota State. The Gamecocks would be wise to not let anybody from the 1977 Bison team be part of food preparation. It was almost 50 years ago, but those NDSU players will never forget the Division II semifinal game played in Anniston, Alabama, when the Bison had to deal with more than Jacksonville State’s speed.

Kolpack: Frozen feet and the start of Dale's dynasty

FARGO — There are two lasting memories from Nov. 11, 1978 when Fargo South met Fargo North for the North Dakota Class A state championship: my feet froze to the point of pain and Dale Hertel started a legendary run of titles. The first issue was all on a high school freshman at South who probably thought it was more cool to wear black Chuck Taylor canvas hightops than some sort of boots. The temperature at old Dacotah Field was 21 degrees with snow surrounding the playing surface.
