Namibia greenlights controversial project to dredge phosphate from seabed
Company Namibian Marine Phosphate has received an environmental clearance for dredging within a concession that spans 2,234 square kilometers (863 square miles) of the Atlantic seabed off Namibia’s coast. The company wants to mine phosphate rock, a major ingredient in fertilizers, which has previously only been commercially mined on land.
Namibia paves way for phosphate mining in the Atlantic Ocean
Namibia has granted environmental clearance for an offshore phosphate mining project that paves the way for the world's first commercial seabed-dredging operation for the mineral, despite opposition from green groups and the fishing industry. Deep-sea mining seeks to tap previously untouched seabed deposits of a range of commodities, including cobalt and nickel, but the fledgling industry has long been stalled by environmental concerns.
Israel, the West’s Golden Calf?
SOURCE: www.whitehouse.gov As war with Iran erupts and the region scrambles for survival, the modern-day face of occupation and genocide in the Middle East enjoys complete impunity and royal treatment from the West. Despite leadership of the West’s Golden Calf facing arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity, the bombing continues.
Healthcare on ADD
Namibia’s healthcare system has been and will probably remain receiving one of the top three largest national budget allocations – Vote 13 - but after 36 years, the routine announcement of a ‘recruitment drive’ and round of applause for one new machine in a big hospital seem more like gestures of reassurance than sustainable progress.
Namibia’s treason of memory
Opinion | This article is an opinion. It expresses the author’s point of view and doesn’t necessarily reflect the views of the publication. A horror of comedic proportion is playing out in Namibia’s High Court, a grim symphony of neo-colonialism put on stage in idiotic audacity, and so eerily reminiscent of the atrocities of Shark Island, Waterberg, and the many concentration camps where Namibians were killed for their right to justice, and even for the bare act of existence.
Lumumba's trial, what this means for Namibia
The decision by the Belgian Federal Prosecutor to request the criminal prosecution of Etienne Davignon, a former senior official allegedly linked to the 1961 assassination of Patrice Lumumba, marks a historic moment. For the first time, a former colonial power stands on the brink of holding one of its own officials criminally accountable for the assassination of an African independence leader — a moment that could rupture decades of silence, denial, and diplomatic containment.
Where is Hyphen?
Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, Namibia’s flagship green hydrogen developer, was notably absent from the speaker line-up and list of supporting entities at the official international press conference and Summit briefing ahead of the 2025 Global African Hydrogen Summit. During the summit's official media briefing held in Windhoek on Monday, Hyphen Hydrogen Energy did not feature among the presenters, nor was it listed as a supporting partner for the upcoming event.
Dangote in Namibia for talks with Nandi-Ndaitwah
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, is set to receive Nigerian billionaire and industrialist Aliko Dangote for a high-level courtesy visit, this morning at State House in Windhoek. Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest businessman and founder of the Dangote Group, is visiting Namibia at a time when Namibia is positioning itself as a hub for green hydrogen and value-added industrialisation.
Namibia's skills paradox
When we examine recent international peer-reviewed articles, a striking pattern emerges. The global skills shortage in oil and gas, and the rapidly expanding green hydrogen sector is not isolated to Namibia. These shortages are deeply felt in developed economies too. In fact, despite their resources and industrial advantage, leading economies in the Global North are urgently up-skilling their own citizens to meet this gap.
ğ¿ Why Waldorf School Windhoek is the perfect fit for Namibiaâs future
In a world where education is increasingly defined by standardization, screens, and testing, more parents across Namibia are asking a crucial question: Is this really the best way to raise future-ready children? For many, the answer lies in a quieter, more human-centered philosophyâone that respects childhood, fosters creativity, and encourages independent thinking.
Namibia’s green hydrogen: strong winds, slow offtake.
Three years into Namibia’s green hydrogen plans, as Namibia still operates without a dedicated energy law and the necessary infrastructure, new reports have cast shadows over the feasibility of transporting green ammonia from Africa to international markets.
South Africa pockets most of Namibia’s FDI dividends
Namibia has attracted N$114.9 billion in foreign direct investment since 2021, however, more than half of this income goes to South Africa. Namibia’s inaugural FDI report, by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development (NIPDB) and the Bank of Namibia (BoN), this week revealed this. It also noted that Namibia’s investments since 2021 were largely driven by oil and gas discoveries in the Orange Basin accounting for N$58.9 billion.
"Parents know their children use and traffic drugs" - Iipumbu
Security Minister Lucia Iipumbu has urged communities to strengthen community policing in response to the rising drug abuse and dealing in homes. During a recent parliament discussion, Iipumbu said parents are aware of the drug problem but remain silent. “Drug trafficking and dealing are a challenge for all of us. It is happening in our houses, it is happening within our communities. I think we need to strengthen community policing more.
Shikongo silent on alleged human trafficking cases in 'Ohangwena' and 'Henties Bay'
Inspector-General Joseph Shikongo of the Namibian Police Force has vehemently refused to elaborate on two alleged human trafficking cases involving foreign nationals, saying the matters were discussed privately and are not for the public. According to sources, Shikongo made the remarks during the High-Level Stakeholders Meeting on Strengthening the National Gender-Based Violence Information Management System held in Swakopmund this week.

These figures were disclosed by Inspector-General Joseph Shikongo during the High-Level Stakeholders Meeting on Strengthening the National GBV Information Management System, held in Swakopmund this week.
