The Continuum Fallacy in Moral Philosophy
1 Introduction One style of argument appears frequently in the literature of moral philosophy. It is generally called a ‘spectrum argument’ or a ‘continuum argument’. Some arguments of this type are invalid because they commit a particular fallacy, which I shall call the ‘Continuum Fallacy’. This fallacy appears in various guises, but its core is always the same. Take a set of quantities that is totally ordered and constitutes a continuum from smaller quantities to larger ones.

Expected Value Fanaticism
Guest essays represent only the views of the author(s). Tiny probabilities of great value When we make decisions, we often do not know which choices result in which outcomes: our choices involve risk. In decision theory, Expected Utility Maximization is the standard way to respond to choices involving risk. An option’s expected value (or utility) is obtained by weighing the potential values (or utilities) of its outcomes by their probabilities and summing these up.

10 DC Redemption Arcs That Were Totally Undeserved
DC Comics Published 34 minutes ago Sign in to your CBR account Superhero comics have long been about the never-ending battle between heroes and villains. What if the heroes could convince the villains to change their ways? Rather than trying to imprison or kill their enemies, what if they instead sought restorative justice? It’s a great idea in theory, but it doesn’t always work in practice. In DC Comics, characters often get a redemption arc without doing anything to deserve it.

In the case of other fast fiends, however, there are a lot of other enemies of the hero who aren't as mainstream. Some of these enemies are pulled from more controversial eras of The Flash's history, while others are simply overshadowed by other foes.

Memorable villains can make a great hero even greater and The Flash has been fighting exciting and colorful supervillains since the 1950s. As the Fastest Man Alive, The Flash can fight multiple villains at once, so it was only natural for his enemies to band together as a group collectively known as the Rogues Gallery. The Rogues are a notoriously unstable group and they've boasted some heavy hitters over the years.

The Flash debuted in 2014 as a spin-off of Arrow. The Flash starred Grant Gustin as Barry Allen aka the Flash. It just ended its nine season run with a total of 184 episodes, even longer than Arrow. The TV show adapted iconic comic book events such as Flashpoint,Crisis on Infinite Earths, and The Godspeed War.
First 10 People To Discover The Flash's Secret Identity

In the DC Universe's Silver Age, most heroes had secret identities, and sometimes protecting that secret was more important to them than stopping the villain. For Barry Allen, there are lots of ways he protected his secret identity. As the Fastest Man Alive, he can blur his facial features, appear in two places at once, or simply run away.
Utilitarianism and Nonhuman Animals

Jeremy Bentham was one of the first Western moral philosophers to take seriously the idea that species membership is morally irrelevant, and that anyone who can suffer morally matters for their own sake.

10 Best DC Heroes With The Worst Debuts
It's a common axiom that nothing is an overnight success, but for some properties, it takes a little longer than others. At DC Comics, this is as true as anywhere, and some popular heroes have grown tremendously from truly dreadful debut stories. While not every character can have a smashing debut like Superman or Batman, that doesn't mean they can't grow to become beloved favorites as time goes on. Where characters start isn't always where they end up.
Nicolas Côté & Bastian Steuwer, Better vaguely right than precisely wrong in effective altruism: the problem of marginalism - PhilPapers
Authors Abstract Effective altruism requires that when we donate to charity, we maximize the beneficial impact of our donations. While we are in broad sympathy with EA, we raise a practical problem for EA, which is that there is a crucial empirical presupposition implicit in its charity assessment methods which is false in many contexts. This is the presupposition that the magnitude of the benefits generated by some charity vary continuously in the scale of the intervention performed.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recognises that climate change is a moral problem or, to use its cautious language, it ‘raises ethical issues’. The authors of the IPCC’s recent Fifth Assessment Report therefore included two moral philosophers. I am one of them. I have been a member of the IPCC’s Working Group 3 since 2011. The writing process was exhaustive and exhausting. Our report went through three full drafts before the final version.

Sophie Cousins: In Kathmandu
When I landed at Kathmandu airport three years ago, not long after the earthquake that killed almost 9000 people, the streets were eerily quiet. Dim street lights shone down on the devastation. Buildings, monuments and houses had been reduced to rubble. Thousands were living in temporary shelters in rough conditions. But the damage to the capital paled in comparison to areas of the country closer to the epicentre of the earthquake, nearly 50 miles west of the city.
Legends of Tomorrow: In Grodd We Trust - 8 Great Plots by the Simian Mastermind
The world is learning what faithful DC Comics fans have known for decades, Gorilla Grodd freakin’ rules. Since his first appearance in 1959, Grodd has been one of DC’s most enduring and unique villains somehow transcending the innate silliness of the concept and becoming one of the biggest badasses in comics. Seriously. Grodd is like a fevered mash-up of Caesar from Planet of the Apes, Professor Xavier, and Stalin. That’s one scary ape right there.
The Freedom Principle
Nearly a half century ago, the New York Art Quartet had its debut at the Cellar Café on the Upper West Side. The occasion was the October Revolution, a four-day music festival curated by Bill Dixon, the visionary trumpeter, founder of the Jazz Composers Guild, and director of jazz programmes at the United Nations.
Carillion and Other Parasites
Until very recently, most of us hadn’t heard of Carillion. Not having heard of a particular company wouldn’t usually be surprising or unsettling. But this is more like not having heard of the people who have been making alterations to your house, building your neighbour’s and – in an odd display of versatility – delivering lunches to your children. Because it turns out that Carillion is – or was, until its sudden but entirely predictable liquidation on Monday – pretty much everywhere.

‘Essentially Bohemian’
In October 1963, Sir Herbert Stanley Marchant, the outgoing British ambassador to Cuba, sent the Foreign Office a six-page confidential profile of Fidel Castro, now held in the National Archives at Kew. Marchant joked that if it didn’t fit the Foreign Office’s purposes he would sell it to Life magazine when he retired, to keep himself ‘in beer money for a month or so’. He had been ambassador since 1960.
Beware of Cows " LRB blog
The statistics make grim reading. In a 2013 report, Overview of Fatal Incidents Involving Cattle, the Health and Safety Executive notes in its usual lapidary prose that ‘this paper gives an overview of fatal incidents involving cattle to (a) Enable Agriculture Industry Advisory Committee members to consider the current trends in agriculture accidents involving cattle.’ There is no room for complacency.

Jenny Diski " LRB blog
Jenny Diski died early this morning. ‘Under no circumstances is anyone to say that I lost a battle with cancer,’ she wrote in the LRB in September 2014. ‘Or that I bore it bravely. I am not fighting, losing, winning or bearing.’ Her first piece for the LRB, a Diary, appeared in May 1992. In all she wrote 150 pieces for the paper (and 65 blog posts), the last of them in February this year: For several days now I’ve been feeling as if I’m on a holiday, a short one coming to its end.

Can the world get by without Russia?
We can’t be sure that, in the tragedy of Vladimir Putin and Russia, the tragedy of the privatisation of a beautiful old prison by one of its former jailers, a new act has begun. The governments of Europe may hold their breath, move on, tut and do nothing while France sells Russia a powerful new warship in the autumn. Or they may decide that letting Russia invade and promote killing and destruction in neighbouring countries is a bad thing.
