John Diaz has been The Chronicle’s editorial page editor since 1996. He has won numerous state and national awards during his tenure, and served as a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes in 2001 and 2002.

Before joining the opinion pages, Diaz directed the newspaper’s East Bay news coverage. He started at The Chronicle in 1990 as an assistant city editor.

Voters pick Republican nominee in Midland County judge runoff election

Midland County voters appear to have decided on a Republican candidate in one of the region's most closely watched races. Results show that Jay Marquez appears to have defeated Karen Hood after incumbent Terry Johnson failed to make the runoff election in March. Marquez and Hood faced off in the runoff for county judge after neither candidate secured more than 50% of the vote in the March primary. Marquez narrowly edged Hood by just a few dozen votes while Johnson finished third.
