Changes to Youth Justice Board are a 'power play' by central government - CYP Now
The decision to put, for the first time in a generation, youth justice policy making and service performance monitoring solely in the hands of the Ministry of Justice will have negative consequences, warns former Youth Justice Board chief executive, John Drew.
Improving Interoperability with Allies and Partners
The U.S. Air Force (USAF) must be able to generate and sustain airpower from a wide variety of dispersed and often partner-owned locations.
Focus and Clarity: How Strategic Visibility Builds Resilience
Community and regional banks hold a critical position in the economic fabric of the U.S. Yet, despite having more data and technology than ever, many of these institutions are feeling more reactive and less strategic. This is about a lack of strategic visibility, or the ability to clearly see how risk and finance interact in time, under pressure and through change. In an ever-changing landscape, this is the foundation for confident leadership.

Obama’s Goldyn Glow-Up: The Truth Behind the Spin
Like television serial killer Dexter Morgan in yet another improbable reboot, Barack Obama keeps getting resurrected by the legacy media — not as he was, but as the character they need him to be. With their full cooperation, he has carefully crafted a public image tailored to middle-of-the-road sensibilities — one that conceals the more radical and uncomfortable truths about his early life.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star: Cosmology and the composition of verse
Knowing someone on the field as a fellow cricketer is one thing. So too becoming privy to his engaging forays into Maharashtrian antiquities. Quite something else it is to listen to Professor Girish Kulkarni of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research giving a public lecture on the properties of the Universe in its first billion years.
A Bengali Buddha in Blighty
Pride of place above the fireplace in the sitting room of our little house in distant Blighty is a painting from North Bengal. It is of the Buddha, an image dating from before the time of the coming of Islam to Bengal when, during the Pala dynasty, great centres of Buddhist learning flourished at sites such as Paharpur, then Somapura.

Lost shoes and sweet laddoos: Songs of innocence in holocaust memorials
I have to write something for Holocaust Memorial Day, said Danka, can you help me? Danka was a rather shy, elderly student in a writing workshop of mine in Cambridge and I agreed. Over a coffee, Danka read out what she had written. It was all about the fragility of civilisation and the need to build bridges between communities, peoples. This is all very worthy, I suggested, but could you be a little more specific? You were a child at the time. What in particular do you remember about the war?
The Doppelgänger
It was actually a bit of a relief to sit on the terrace of the Gezira Pension and have a quiet breakfast before plunging back once more into the traffic of Cairo in search of a carriage to the museum.
Viewpoint: Opinion - Keeping the faith of a youth justice worker - CYP Now
For my last column, I wanted to draw on a conversation I had earlier in the year at a funeral of a former mentor of mine, Avril, who was one of many people from whom I have drawn inspiration along the way. In giving this column its title, I want to describe some of the things that have sustained me through good times and bad. My first inspiration comes from criminology.
Utpal Dutt and the new dawn
I notice the first theatre season in the new Bangladesh Commonwealth has been marked by a revival of Utpal Dutt's play about corruption among the social elites, Hari Phatibe. This brings back memories. My own first introduction to East Bengal was seeing a production of Utpal's Titash Ekti Nadir Nam at the Minerva Theatre in Kolkata in 1963. As we sat around the jutting apron stage, fisherfolk came at us from all sides. It was spectacular, quite literally breathtaking. We were in East Bengal.
Drew: An open letter of thanks to President Biden
Mr. President: I fervently hope that America gives you many thanks for preserving our Republic. In 2020 you stood up and confronted an administration that began in 2016 with what seems a laser focus on undermining and diminishing our nation. An administration willing to align with the worst dictators, a presidency with the clear goal of weakening the U.S. by retrenching and pulling back the country to its shore line.
Five justice research messages for politicians
John Drew We are entering the run up to the next general election. Politicians are busy making their final adjustments to election manifestos. This is therefore a great moment to remind them, and all of us, of the key messages from research about what works in youth justice. Last October, Professor Ursula Kilkenny summarised 10 key messages from research for the Probation Inspectorate’s Academic Insights series. There isn’t the space here to list them all but here are five messages for politicians.
A writer goes back in time to Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, to see the place through EM Forster’s eyes
EM Forster’s novel A Passage to India was published a hundred years ago, in 1924. On the surface a critical exposé of the British Raj, it has a philosophical underlay, its characters stretched between two apparently opposing poles: the gross materialism of the Marabar Caves and the ravishing spiritual ecstasy of the Krishna festival at Mau.

How a Gujarati dance drama recreated the first-known game of cricket on Indian soil in 1721
Sixty years ago, I watched the First Test between India and England in Chennai, constantly stopped by cut kites falling out of the sky and flowers piling up from the garlands fans had flung round the necks of their heroes. Of the batting and bowling I remember nothing.
No door
In Mutanabbi Street Hajji Muhammed sits Outside what had been His shop. His five sons Were killed and the books That filled his shelves Lie senseless on the floor. There are no walls. No door. This poem is about a bookshop in Baghdad destroyed in the Iraq War. Mutanabbi Street, named after a great Iraqi poet, has long been famed for its bookshops. John Drew is an occasional contributor to The Daily Star. A collection of his articles is due to be published later this year by ULAB Press.
How to write a love song
500 years ago, Edmund Spenser wrote a poem to celebrate a wedding taking place beside the River Thames. Each stanza ends with the refrain: "Sweet Thames, run softly till I end my song". We don't write Elizabethan-style poems any more but the first great Modernist poem, T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland", picks up on this catchy refrain. And so does a love song by a '60s folk singer, Ewan MacColl. If you know a catchy line—or two or more—from the past, go with it.
Eyeball to eyeball at Lords: A Bangladeshi occasion in a very English setting
Blazers and old school—as well as specially commissioned—ties dotted the revered Long Room at Lord's on Sunday afternoon (October 1st) as W.G. Grace and other legendary cricketing worthies gazed down from the walls on a very special Bangladeshi occasion. Yousuf Rahman Babu, one of Bangladesh's original stalwart all-rounders, was re-launching on the international scene his comprehensive, illustrated history of Bangladesh cricket, Eyes on the Ball (Fusion Sports, 2023).
Child impact assessments give courts full picture
Locking up women, especially those who are sole carers of dependent children, can have disastrous consequences for the woman, but also for the child. It has been calculated that nearly two thirds of women in prison have children who are under 18 years of age. The total number of children affected by this is at least 17,000 and probably a lot more. Only five per cent of children remain in their homes when their mothers are imprisoned.
In some corner of a foreign field: Rahmat Ali & the once and future Cambridge Majlis
What year would you say modern Bangladesh was first conceived of as a separate nation? I ask the question because I have just been looking at a map of South Asia adorning the cover of a pamphlet published in Cambridge in 1933 and, there it is, large as the leaf if not life, Bang-i-Islam.
7 Essential Elements to Integrate Financial Metrics and Risk Strategy
Banks depend on their financial reporting and performance metrics — but often this data is scattered among multiple systems and spreadsheets at typical community and regional banks, and it is very rarely viewed in conjunction with risk data. As a result, bank executives do not have the visibility they need, while strategic opportunities slip by. Bank’s risk data is often uncoordinated and confusing, stemming from disjointed risk management processes and poor communication flow.

Get Out of React Mode by Integrating Finance and Risk in These Key Areas
•This is an updated version of an article that was originally published on Aug. 4, 2023 Banks depend on financial reporting and performance metrics to help manage risk, but the data held by the typical community or regional bank is usually scattered across multiple systems and spreadsheets. And rarely is it incorporated effectively into the risk-management process. As a result, bank executives often lack the visibility they need to pursue strategic growth opportunities.
‘Plants of the Quran’ explores flora dating back 1400 years
The first mosque or masjid in Britain was built as long ago as 1761, some 30 years after George Sale's ground-breaking translation of the Qur'an. That it was built in Kew Gardens gives the game away. It was designed not as a place of worship but as one of a series of orientalist buildings gracing an extensive royal park. So what shall we say about an exhibition just opened at Kew Gardens to celebrate the launch of an illustrated book, Plants of the Qur'an (Kew Publishing, 2023)?
The once and future bedes & ‘Gypsies?
Szilvia Reif, a student of mine from the (indicatively named) Gandhi School in Pècs, Hungary, wrote a poem that tells what it feels like to be a 'Gypsy (properly Roma). Stanza by stanza she reviews what associations have accrued to the word "'Gypsy". Yes, it causes bad feelings. But also, more positively, a unique talent for music, for sticking together and sharing a unique language and for predicting the future.

Drew: It’s critical to bring back the Child Tax Credit now
What kept low- and moderate-income families with children afloat in 2021 as COVID-19 variants battered their world and soaring prices bore down on them? The Child Tax Credit. Throughout 2021 this lifesaving program based in the IRS provided families with a monthly payment of $300 per child under age 6 and $250 for each child ages 6 to 12 years old. To get the desperately needed funds to families quickly, payments were made directly to them for the first six months.
How East India traders brought cricket to Indian shores 300 years ago this fortnight
December 1721: Three hundred years ago, this very fortnight, the first known cricketing on Indian soil took place. The reference comes in a confused, if lively, History of the Indian Wars (1737), composed by an unreliable able seaman, Clement Downing, seeking re-employment with the British East India Company. Shipping records substantiate details of his account.
The Christmas the Kolis took to cricket
London The year is 1721. There are Indians, many no doubt Bengali, visible on the streets of London, some settled down there, others at a loss, mostly sea-farers off the East India Company ships bringing the Indian fabrics that have become all the fashion, silks worn by the rich, cottons by the poor. The London weavers are so fearful of losing their jobs they are rioting, throwing acid at the women who continue to wear the colourful Indian calicoes, tearing them off their backs in the streets.
Drew: Increased funding for recovery high schools will save lives
Breaking News Man shot to death after stabbing officer in neck, Boston Police say November 6, 2021 at 9:38 pm I applaud the Boston Herald’s recent call for increased state funding for recovery high schools — an investment that’s critical to preventing ever more misery along Boston’s “Mass & Cass” methadone mile. Since 2006, ABCD — Action for Boston Community Development — has operated William J. Ostiguy High School, Boston’s only recovery high school and one of just five in Massachusetts.
Drew: Note to universal pre-k planners - we already have Head Start
Across America, many are applauding the Senate passage on Aug. 12 of a $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package as a first step in advancing the largest safety net expansion since the 1960s.
A Tribute to Allen Ginsberg on his 24th Death Anniversary
Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, as much at home on the Kali Ghat as in Greenwich Village, is best remembered in Bangladesh on account of his poem, September on the Jessore Road. Year One. I have a happier, earlier, memory of him standing outside his hotel in the Canadian city of Saint John on the day he was due to read to my students. For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. Saint John and other ports on the east-coast Maritime provinces had once been the gateway to Canada.
OPINION: Fed dollars are needed right now to blunt pandemic crisis fallout
This holiday season is punctuated by unrelenting need – a need sparked by pandemic-induced job loss in neighborhoods already afflicted by poverty, health and economic disparities, and racial inequity. Children, families and seniors in Dorchester and other city neighborhoods can’t wait any longer for the federal government to pass virus relief funding that will keep food on their tables and a roofs over their heads. Without immediate action, the suffering will be unbearable.
ABCD: Hungry children can’t wait months for relief bill
It’s been six weeks since the termination of the $600 per week Pandemic Unemployment Insurance that kept millions of workers who lost their jobs afloat in the early months of the COVID-19 crisis. Right now it is critical for the House, Senate and White House to come together on legislation that continues that funding and meets other urgent pandemic-related needs. Why do we need comprehensive federal assistance now? Twenty-nine million Americans have lost their jobs and their income.
Op Ed: Why Unions Matter More Than Ever

The police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha laid bare the stark realities of systemic racism right here in Wisconsin.
Meeting Young Obama
My first meeting with young Barack Obama raised strong feelings and left me with a positive first impression. At the time, I felt I'd persuaded a young man anticipating a Marxist-Leninist revolution to appreciate the more practical alternative of conventional politics as a channel for his socialist views. I met Obama in December of 1980, a couple of days after Christmas, in Portola Valley -- a small town near Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.
Easy to become an enemy when speaking truth
June 9, 2020 By John Drew The Conversation // Special to Western News Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, listens as President Donald Trump speaks about the coronavirus at the White House, May 15. A doctor speaks about events they think will put public health at risk. Instead of responding with gratitude, political officials seek to silence and discredit the doctor.

It's easy to become an enemy of the people when speaking truth — in historic drama, and today
A doctor speaks about events they think will put public health at risk. Instead of responding with gratitude, political officials seek to silence and discredit the doctor. Is this in China, the United States, Canada or a small Norwegian town in Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of the People? These are extraordinary times that require us to come up with new ways to understand and tackle social, economic and health crises.

PM has forgotten what diverts young offenders
PM has forgotten what diverts young offenders The Prime Minister's recent law and order announcements are clearly intended to pave the way for a new debate on criminal justice in any forthcoming general election. The £5bn announcement centres on hiring 20,000 extra police officers, building 10,000 more prison places, and an expansion of the stop and search provision. Very law, very order.

Saeed (a short film)
Since 2011, Syria has been- and continues to be -devastated by war. Over 5 million Syrians have fled the country and more than 6 million people have been internally displaced. Hundreds of thousands of citizens have been killed. This is the single greatest refugee crisis of our time. And yet: Our goal with this project is to creatively show what life looks and feels like for just one of the millions of Syrian families trying to survive the post traumatic horrors of what remains an endless war.
