Amino acid-derived ionizable lipids enable inhaled base editing for therapeutic gene correction in the lung
Abstract CRISPR-based gene editing holds promise for treating genetic diseases, yet its application to lung disorders has been hindered by the challenges of pulmonary delivery. Inspired by the modularity and biocompatibility of amino acid-derived chemistries, we report the combinatorial synthesis of 960 ionizable lipids incorporating chemically diverse backbones from both proteinogenic and non-proteinogenic α-amino acids.
End Of An Era: Ohio Racing Veteran 'Joey The Clocker' Dies
The fabric of Southern Ohio's Thoroughbred racing tapestry has lost another thread: this week marked the passing of Homer Lee Van Hoosier - known to most around Belterra Park (formerly River Downs) as "Joey the Clocker." At most tracks, the clocker is every bit as important as the starter or the chart caller to ensure the betting public has accurate information. It is a game of inches, after all. Back in the day, the clocker was a mainstay of the track.

Working Man's Hero: Tribute To Belterra's 'Paddock Bob'
It took over two decades before I found out that McAtee was Bob's last name, and I don’t think I’m the only one. “Paddock Bob” was a strong thread in the tapestry that makes up the real racing world. If we were racing at Belterra Park, he was there, going about his paddock chores with dignity and a cool inner peace. While working, he was a man of few words. But if you earned his trust, you would get to sit down and listen to his words of wisdom and share his humor.
Artificial intelligence-guided design of lipid nanoparticles for pulmonary gene therapy - Nature Biotechnology
Abstract Ionizable lipids are a key component of lipid nanoparticles, the leading nonviral messenger RNA delivery technology. Here, to advance the identification of ionizable lipids beyond current methods, which rely on experimental screening and/or rational design, we introduce lipid optimization using neural networks, a deep-learning strategy for ionizable lipid design.
