Festival security funding controversy put to rest, for now

For one year, at least, the City Council put to rest a controversy over whether taxpayers or organizers will fund private security at the Burnsville Festival and Fire Muster. The council voted 3-2 Tuesday to amend the city’s 2026 budget and pay a security firm $17,849 to work this year’s festival, which runs from Sept. 10-12.

Cannabis business sprouts in Burnsville

Several cannabis businesses have planted seeds in Burnsville. Great Northern Greens is the first to sprout. The locally owned microbusiness opened its retail store July 3 at 1100 Riverwood Drive, north of Highway 13 and west of 12th Avenue. Great Northern Greens was the first to seek city approval and is the first to open among the five cannabis businesses that have received conditional use permits in Burnsville, according to co-owner Patrick Reynolds.

District 191 budget relies on reserves to balance

School District 191 is using budget reserves and personnel savings to balance next year’s budget. The $241 million budget approved June 25 by the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board uses a net total of $12.08 million in reserves across all funds. The $176.8 million general fund relies on $12.35 million in reserves. Budget adjustments produced $4.22 million in savings.
