In a former storage space behind Darsham train station, on the East Suffolk Line halfway from Ipswich to Lowestoft, the art gallery Unit 4 is operating this summer. Its inaugural show, Modern Problems, co-curated by David Cooper, who lives in the nearby village of Yoxford, and Giovanni Morter, might take anybody coming up from London by surprise. Not your usual local artist fare, it brings together a range of revelatory works by artists working in the area.

At the Fondazione Giorgio Cini

Eroi d’Oro​ , an exhibition at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice (until 27 September), contains Georg Baselitz’s final works. He died six days before the show opened, at the age of 88. Sixteen monumental paintings are displayed in two large rooms lined with black fabric; the building adjoins the church of San Giorgio Maggiore, famous for its great late works by Tintoretto, the Last Supper and The Israelites in the Desert.

Comment | Georg Baselitz's final exhibition is a warning that history is repeating itself

The standout show in Venice this year is also one of the most poignant. Georg Baselitz died a week before the opening of the exhibition of his paintings Eroi d’Oro (Golden Heroes) on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore (until 27 September). In two large rooms, very large upright paintings show a single inverted naked figure drawn with a fine black line on a golden ground. The figures are all, with one exception, images of Elke Kretzschmar, the artist’s wife.
