Bolton, 1860-1955

The former lumber town of Bolton has been around ever since the 1860s. Between 1905 and 1955 the town began to dwindle, with businesses closing down and the proprietors packing up and going elsewhere. At one time, the town had a church, depot, dry goods store, general store, grocery, post office, saloon, sawmill, school and shingle mill. The church seems to have been demolished. The railroad tracks have been torn up.

Shiawassee County

Here is something you may have passed by unknowingly in Shiawassee County: a lone grave out in a field...away from any conventional cemetery. This grave contains the remains of Lyman Melvin, buried in a pile of Earth similar to that of an Indian burial mound. This burial mound is unmarked on the south side of Beard Road in Antrim Township, approximately 50 yards from the road. It's measurements are about six feet high and eight feet across.

MADE IN MICHIGAN: No Grapes, No Nuts; So Why Call it "Grape-Nuts"?

Grape-Nuts cereal. Created in Battle Creek, Michigan by C.W. Post. It contains no grapes. It contains no nuts. So why call it ‘Grape-Nuts’? It’s made from barley, salt, wheat, and yeast – no grapes or nuts in sight. One excuse – er, reason - says that Post thought glucose was formed. He referred to glucose as ‘grape sugar’ and the final product had a ‘nutty’ taste. Another reason – and one I’ve always believed – is that the cereal does indeed look like the seeds – or nuts – of grapes.
