David Solomon eyeing near-term Goldman Sachs CEO exit, reports say, and his heir apparent looks RIA-friendly • DFA search for M&A partner went quiet, and complex factors could prolong the process
Goldman Sachs may soon lose the CEO who put RIAs on the squid map but with a silver lining. Heir apparent John Waldron is shaping up to be its most RIA-friendly and -fluent CEO ever. A flurry of press reports state that Waldron, currently president and chief operating officer, could replace CEO David Solomon as early as January.

Rep. John Waldron: Another Epic failure by giving unchecked millions to private schools
Two years in and we’re starting to see the impact of the decision to offer parental tax credits — better known as vouchers — to families enrolled in private schools. It's worth remembering that State Auditor Cindy Byrd was auditing Epic Charter School when the law for this voucher was passed. Epic Charter School is the nonprofit online virtual charter school authorized by an earlier state law that didn't have enough mandated oversight.

Rep. John Waldron: Proposed changes to social studies standards cheat to narrow book options
The way we teach the story of us to our children matters. We owe them an honest account of the past so that they can understand the present and build a better future. This year, the Oklahoma Legislature will review new standards for public school students in social studies. As a state representative and former social studies teacher, I have cause for concern. Having consulted with education experts, I believe a problem is embedded in these standards — a "cheat code," if you will.
Rep. John Waldron letter: Oklahoma needs more momsense in public office
This year, canvassing door-to-door for many candidates, I've noticed a theme that can be called “Momsense.” They’re mothers raising school-aged children who know how hard it is to raise a family in this economy. They’re not ideologues but rather practical leaders wanting commonsense reforms. Oklahoma’s leadership likes to proclaim our status as a pro-life, family friendly state. In reality Oklahoma leads the nation in child poverty, food insecurity, divorce rates and domestic abuse.
How to Start a Software Project: A No-Stress Roadmap
Starting up any new IT project can be stresfull. It shouldn’t be, however, and it needn’t be either if you choose a development team that puts communications and project organization at the forefront of all its processes. Getting started can often feel like the hardest part of any new endeavor to take on – fear of the blank canvas can apply to any professional, not just the struggling and tortured artist.
Rep. John Waldron: Forcing Bible study in school won't improve academics or Christianity
Here's a history fun fact: The two most quoted works in the English language were both published under the same English King, James I. Those books were the King James Bible and the collected works of William Shakespeare. Now here's something less fun to consider: The Oklahoma State Department of Education has issued a directive to put a Bible in every classroom and required teachers to use it in classroom instruction — or face loss of their teaching certification.

Rock Type One event harnesses music in quest for diabetes cure
Each year, the Florida chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) schedules its most significant fundraising event, the JDRF One Walk. The foundation's annual goal is to raise awareness about Type 1 Diabetes, raise funds for research, and engage with local communities. Type 1 Diabetes is often confused with Type 2 Diabetes, which dominates mainstream media with management drugs and PSAs. However, Type 1 Diabetes is entirely different.
Rep. John Waldron: I'm not letting State Superintendent Ryan Walters fool me twice
Recently, State Superintendent Ryan Walters unveiled a $3.7 billion education budget, one he called “the most innovative in state history.” But on a closer look, there are serious problems of transparency, accountability and follow-through that make me wonder if we are looking at the emperor’s new budget, that is, an exercise in deception and delusion. A cornerstone of his budget has been new investments in tutoring to improve test scores and signing bonuses to recruit out-of-state teachers.

Rep. John Waldron: Shell game being played on Tulsa Public Schools by state education department
State Superintendent Ryan Walters is playing us. At the most recent State Board of Education meeting, Tulsa Public Schools officials were given new demands for improvement of schools without prior notice. Now Walters wants 12 schools on a federal list for Most Rigorous Intervention (MRI) to show improvement or be closed down. This is a shell game. Schools on that list are usually there because they face deep-seated problems of poverty, trauma, incarceration and addiction.

Rep. John Waldron: Lawmakers, school districts have chance to eliminate school lunch debt for thousands of Oklahomans
What are the costs and benefits of feeding schoolchildren? That’s a question I tried to address, as part of a bipartisan interim study in the Oklahoma legislature earlier this year. About 700,000 kids attend our public schools. Most qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many face food insecurity and count on school meals as the most reliable nutrition they receive each week.

Rep. John Waldron: Difference between 'A' and 'F' schools is affluence
In the next few weeks, A-F report cards for schools and school districts will be issued based on last year’s test scores and other data. State Superintendent Ryan Walters will pay close attention to the number of F schools in Tulsa and may use the report to amplify his attacks on TPS. But what separates an F school from an A school? What separates the schools at the top from those at the bottom? Affluence. For two decades I taught in Oklahoma’s best public high school.
How to Make Every School a Failing School
My yoga instructor at YogaQuest often says, “Simple is the new hard,” or something to that effect. I don’t know what that means, but it makes sense in the middle of Standing Bow-pulling Pose. Often, things may sound logical on the surface, but if we think about it, it doesn’t make sense at all.

Rep. John Waldron: Will you stand up against the rotten state of affairs being foisted on Oklahoma's public schools?
More than a 100 years ago, the French author Emile Zola confronted his government over the wrongful prosecution of a Jewish army officer, Alfred Dreyfus, for espionage. His famous letter appeared in the leading newspapers of the day, and used the rhetorical device of repeating the phrase, “I accuse,” as he named names and called out the powerful. He was forced into exile as a result, but his forceful tirade revived the campaign for Dreyfus’ exoneration and restored democratic impulses in France.
Rep. John Waldron: Beware of the 'witch finder' who has come to Tulsa
On Aug. 24 the State Board of Education will meet to discuss the fate of Tulsa Public Schools. State Superintendent Ryan Walters has said “all options are on the table.” That could include dissolving the school district or removing TPS Superintendent Deborah Gist and replacing her with one of his cronies. Walters alludes to some problems: an unfortunate embezzlement scandal by an ex-employee, a delayed report submission, low test scores.

Rep. John Waldron: Don't be distracted by continuing controversial comments from Ryan Walters; follow the money
State Superintendent Ryan Walters recently made some controversial comments about the Tulsa Race Massacre, suggesting that it could be taught without reference to race. A lot has been said about his remarks. I would like to connect the dots between this reprehensible rhetoric and the method behind this madness. Yes, he was wrong to try to decouple matters of race from the discussion of the Tulsa Race Massacre.
Rep. John Waldron: Continue investing in proven prison reduction programs
I recently attended a board retreat for First Step Male Diversion, a criminal justice program operating here in Tulsa. It serves a small number of nonviolent male offenders, providing them with counseling, job training, parenting lessons, housing and other supports as an alternative to incarceration. Like a lot of scrappy start-ups, it spends a lot of time raising the money it needs to operate.

Be more concerned with censorship than pornography
In recent weeks our state superintendent for public instruction, Ryan Walters, has twice delivered to the Legislature images he says are pornographic, as part of his campaign to distract from his failure to manage the State Department of Education. That's a long and sordid story. But along with the images, I found something much more disturbing: a list of books he said were "questionable" and might need to be kept out of our schools.

Torres Del Paines, Chile
It was one of those rare clear days in Torres Del Paines. The blue tones were especially vibrant, and I really wanted them to pop. Most of the area is very protected, and you can't usually get this close to the water, but there are a few spots. I headed to an access point I knew of to get to a lake. The blues in the lake and the sky glowed, and while the weather was nice and clear, I grabbed this picture. Upload YOUR Picture • WIN $200 Cash Did you know that now we offer a VIP membership?
Public schools are welcoming of students expressing their faith in classrooms Original
There's been talk lately of convening a task force to study religion in public schools. As a teacher turned legislator, I think that's a fine idea. The common misconception is that we have no religion at school or that the state somehow bars religious observance in the classroom. That's simply not true. While public schools prohibit the promotion of a particular religion, they are a place where religious values can thrive because they are left up to the individual rather than the state.

Glacier National Park Waterfall, Montana, USA
It was a dark rainy day, not unusual for the mountains. I decided to hike anyway to take advantage of my limited time in places like this. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad I couldn't even see the mountains towering around me, which was incredibly depressing. I usually try to photograph waterfalls on days like this since they photograph incredibly well in these conditions.
'There are many myths about e-cigarettes and vaping'
E-cigarettes (vapes) are currently the most popular aid used to quit smoking in England and are used by around 4.3 million adults in Great Britain, the majority of whom are ex-smokers (ASH, 2022a). A recent Cochrane systematic review found that e-cigarettes are a more effective quitting aid for smokers than nicotine patches or gum (Hartmann-Boyce et al, 2022).

Common decency has left our political system | Opinion
John Waldron Your Turn The other day my social media account was blinging quite loudly about a political mailer that went out to the public in certain areas of Leon County. The mailer came right out and stated, in both appalling and unsubstantiated text, that Alex Stemle is not worthy to be elected as a member of Leon County School Board.
State leaders exploiting differences, targeting TPS for personal gain
The Tulsa Public Schools are under concerted attack. This attack is coming from the school voucher lobby and is supported by powerful politicians. Gov. Kevin Stitt and his appointed education secretary, Ryan Walters, are leading the charge, with the aim of destroying one of our city's most precious institutions. It began several years ago with individuals voicing their complaints, some with legitimate concerns.

9 June 2022 Calls for immediate investment of £125 million a year will help to make smoking history. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) today (June 9) welcomed Javed Khan’s call for £125 million immediate annual investment to deliver his bold plans to make smoking obsolete. Following publication of the independent review, ASH urged that there is no time to wait if the Government is to achieve its smokefree 2030 ambition (5% by 2030).
Unicorn Wranglers help close in on type 1 diabetes research with benefit concert
John Waldron Guest columnist Currently, one of the hottest mythical icons for kids, and some adults for that matter, is the unicorn. The fabled horned horse can be found plastered on many lunch boxes and T-shirts, as well as made into plush toys and figurines. Why the fixation? Who knows, but a unicorn can mean something entirely different for the 1.6 million people in America who are type 1 diabetics (T1D). In the T1D community.
Lamkin has long been involved in schools, deserves spot on TPS school board
The race for Tulsa Public Schools' District 7 seat is an open contest between two first-time candidates. Susan Lamkin is a TPS parent who sent four kids through our public schools and has a long history of service in the PTA. Her opponent, Tim Harris, is well-known, but not for education, and chose not to send his children to our public schools. I think this gives us a clear choice: Susan Lamkin for school board.
The NHS, local government, MPs and peers stand together to commit to a smokefree future
09 March 2022 At a parliamentary event to celebrate No Smoking Day [1] the Public Health Minister heard leading figures from across health and local government affirm their commitment to securing the Government’s goal of a smokefree country by 2030. What unites us is more important than what divides us I’m not just a dad. I’m a brother to eight siblings. This Thanksgiving, I was able to see all of them as we celebrated my mother’s 90th birthday in New Jersey. With a family this big, there’s bound to be a wide range of political viewpoints, and these days we know how much trouble that can cause. Fortunately, there was Smudgey. Smudgey was one of the many cats we grew up with back in the ‘70s, so named for the black smudge on his white lip.
The Next Big Fight:
Concerns about the future of public education in Oklahoma As a former teacher and a middle school dad, I’m very concerned about the future of public education in Oklahoma. As a state legislator, I’m worried about the direction in which we seem to be heading. We just finished rounds of interim studies in which we brought in experts to testify on issues of interest to the state Legislature. Many of them were convened in the Common Education committee.
