One last sunset in Uncasville | The Day
The sad part is that the Sun left not because nobody cared or they couldn’t make money, not because it couldn’t find fans or win games. The Sun helped the league survive but now the WNBA is moving into bigger markets and leaving them behind. The Connecticut Sun’s sunset season came to an end on Thursday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, and with it the curtain dropped on an unforgettable era.

"Their questions about the technology, privacy and the company entrusted with their data deserve careful answers," Creutz said.
Future of State Pier still an open question | The Day
New London — With two of Ørsted’s three offshore-wind projects now complete, the future of State Pier is once again an open question, complicated by a wind-averse Trump administration and an industry facing national headwinds. South Fork and, more recently, Revolution Wind are finished.

From movie palace to arts center, the Garde struggled along the way | The Day
The first music ever heard at the Garde Theatre didn’t come from an orchestra, jazz band, or film score. It rang out from the Mighty Wurlitzer, the colorful soundtrack of movie palaces everywhere. On Sept. 22, 1926, opening night, the organist launched into the Star-Spangled Banner as 1,700 people, a full house, rose to their feet.
From Dylan to elephants to the Flying Wallendas, the Garde has hosted it all | The Day
The Garde in New London has lasted a century — an eternity for an arts venue. As it marks its 100th anniversary this year, its survival can be traced, in part, to how it has evolved over those decades to adapt to outside forces. What began as a booming vaudeville house and movie palace called the Garde Theatre in the 1920s saw its success wane in the 1970s and ’80s. But a reinvention in the 1980s gave it a second life.

How far will we let Trump go? | The Day
First, there were President Donald Trump’s references to the media "as the enemy of the people." Then there was the constant bullying and name calling with female reporters — his most popular target — including one he called "Piggie." Then there was banning of the Associated Press reporters from the Oval Office, Air Force One and certain events for not changing the recommended name of the Gulf of Mexico in its widely used stylebook.
Capturing '50 Years of HerStory' at the Coast Guard Academy | The Day
New London — As a U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadet, Nicolle Bogden rarely contemplated the fact that there was a time before women were welcome. In the class of 2012, Bogden said she never had to worry about being assigned a men’s uniform or having to cut her hair short. She never felt uncomfortable asking for an extra bathroom break if she was on her period, and she never had to walk far to find a female restroom. Bogden is no longer taking these experiences for granted.

California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops | The Day
LODI, Calif. (AP) — It's harvest time in California wine country, but many growers are struggling to sell their grapes as changing drinking habits have caused demand to plunge. The decline is forcing some growers to tear out vineyards that their families have grown for generations. Wine sales have decreased by more than 20% over a five-year period, causing prices paid for grapes to drop and prompting California growers to take roughly a quarter of the state's vineyards out of production.

Why isn't Lamont's nullification 'too extreme' for Connecticut? | The Day
What is too extreme politically for Connecticut in the era of President Donald Trump and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani? According to a television commercial from Gov. Ned Lamont's reelection campaign, the extremism is that of the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Greenwich state Sen. Ryan Fazio, who this year voted against legislation that purported to prohibit federal immigration agents from making arrests at schools, churches and other supposedly sensitive locations.

Trump is out of touch and out of control | The Day
President Trump’s new arch is estimated to cost taxpayers $100 million. Security upgrades related to his ballroom may cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. The cost to taxpayers of ICE’s expansion over four years is estimated to be $75 billion. Trump’s immigration plan was to remove the worst of the worst. But, according to reports, 70% of the immigrants arrested by ICE had no criminal record.
We don't save money by refusing to help | The Day
We need to have an honest conversation about what it costs when we refuse to invest in people. Programs that help people in addiction recovery, provide housing for people who are unhoused or help people returning from prison are sometimes treated as unnecessary. But refusing to provide those services doesn’t make the underlying problems disappear. It often means taxpayers pay more later through emergency services, hospitals, shelters, incarceration and other systems. Think about windshield wipers.
Opinions differ on multi-birthday gift exchange | The Day
DEAR ABBY: I have a group of friends who get together once a month, usually for a casual dinner. Next month’s gathering will be to celebrate three birthdays, one of which is mine. While planning this gathering (via text), I asked if we could skip exchanging presents and just enjoy our time together. The response from my friends was “No! We’re doing presents.” I know their intention is good; these are very generous friends.
Trump: What a waste | The Day
Donald Trump has the guile and leadership skills that could have made him a great president. Rather than starting the Iran mess, hiking inflation with tariffs and building gaudy monuments to himself, he could have used his approach to: 1. Save Social Security; 2. Reign in the medical industry by mandating lower prices for procedures, devices and medications; 3. Shrink our bloated, wasteful military; 4.

Vikings use their young gun, LeCara, in a 21-14 victory over Bacon/Lyman | The Day
Colchester — It was midway through the summer, East Lyme didn’t have a quarterback and one of head coach Tom Kleine’s assistants suggested they give Layne LeCara a shot. LeCara played multiple offensive positions last season but not quarterback. LeCara was also playing for the middle school team last year as an eighth-grader. “I kind of looked at him and said, ‘Let’s roll with it and see how it goes,’” Kleine said. It went pretty well on a dark and rainy Friday night in Colchester.

As the Connecticut Sun leave, can the state still compete for a major-league team? | The Day
As the Connecticut Sun leave, can the state still compete for a major-league team? Any longtime Connecticut sports fan can list the indignities. The Whalers left Hartford for North Carolina in 1997. A few years later, the Patriots convinced Connecticut they were on their way, before recommitting to Massachusetts when they secured the new stadium they wanted. Various minor league teams have come and gone since. Connecticut sports historians can go back even further.

Come for the casserole, stay for the company | The Day
Last June, I wrote about loneliness in Lyme and how few places we have to bump into each other. I shared that the First Congregational Church of Lyme had approved renovating its kitchen, the first major update in decades. I'm happy to report the kitchen is done (and yes, the casseroles are optional). But here's the thing about change: once you give it a push, it keeps rolling.

Support for Lee Elci | The Day
I am pleased and proud to write in support of Lee Elci, Republican candidate for state senator in Connecticut’s 20th District. I have known Lee for more than 45 years. I had the pleasure of coaching him in football at Waterford High School and later became his neighbor when I moved to Millstone Point in Waterford. Honest, motivated, hardworking and intuitive are words that have always described Lee.
Trump should raise his bribe | The Day
I think President Trump's offer of $5,000 per person if the Republicans win the midterm elections is a great idea. My only concern is that it doesn’t go far enough. After all, if I am going to surrender my constitutional right of free and fair elections, tank the economy, inflame inflation, shrink the dollar, increase the debt, deficit and interest rates and likely cause widespread unemployment I should be better compensated. My feeling is that $25,000 is a nice round figure.
Supporting Lee Elci | The Day
I am supporting Lee Elci for state Senate in Connecticut’s 20th District, and I encourage voters in Old Lyme and Old Saybrook to do the same. As a volunteer first-responder fire police officer/firefighter with the Old Saybrook Fire Department, I understand the importance of community service and having someone who will listen. Lee has supported me personally on numerous charitable events over the years, demonstrating that his commitment to our communities extends well beyond politics.

Menapace always shows up | The Day
One of the things I appreciate most about Nick Menapace is that he does not disappear into Hartford after Election Day. He continues to show up here at home, whether at town halls, library programs, local celebrations or other community events. When I have had the opportunity to speak with Nick, I have found him willing to listen and genuinely interested in what people have to say. He does not make you feel rushed or as though your concern is just one more item on his schedule.
Meta settlement a step in the right direction | The Day
This is as close as we’re likely to get to an admission of guilt or a mea culpa from a giant technology company. Last week, technology behemoth Meta, which owns and operates Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other social media platforms, agreed to pay up to $17 billion as part of a landmark settlement with over 30 states, including Connecticut.

Before we put up more cameras, let's ask why | The Day
As a state representative, I have received many questions from constituents about automated license plate readers, often called Flock cameras. And as a member of the legislature’s AI Caucus, I have joined colleagues in calling for a pause on new installations. There is a legitimate public-safety argument for these cameras. But serious questions remain about privacy, data sharing, and how information about where we travel is collected and used.
Fashion queen's luxury splendor, moral squalor | The Day
Anna Wintour spent nearly four decades reigning over Vogue magazine. She was chair of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and its glitzy gala. Wintour is an inspiration for the imperious fashion editor in "The Devil Wears Prada." With her trademark bob hair, sunglasses and snotty English accent, Wintour has been the style influence who crowns the influencers. But her honking blunder in choosing designer John Galliano for a solo show has sullied her legacy.
