This month's regular round of security patches from Microsoft is likely to cause more than one Patch Wednesday (antipodean time) chronicler to sit up due to the sheer volume of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) indexed bugs, around three times more than for June 2026. "Here it is. The Mother of All Releases," security vendor Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative researcher Dustin Childs said.

Researchers have unearthed an Apple macOS malware campaign hidden behind a well-designed veneer of credibility, which uses an unexpected attack vector, namely application crash reporting. Security vendor Jamf posted a detailed technical analysis of the CrashStealer malware that it first came across in May this year, with further samples being collected at a later stage.

Microsoft fixes 'RoguePlanet' Defender zero-day as researcher finds new holes

Microsoft said it has closed off RoguePlanet, a privilege escalation flaw in the Windows Defender scanning engine that could let a local attacker spawn a SYSTEM-level shell, but the researcher who found the zero-day bug has poked new holes in the anti-malware tool. A race condition bug, the vulnerability works on Windows 10 and 11 operating systems that are not patched against RoguePlanet, and carries a common vulnerability scoring system (CVSS) rating of 7.8 out of 10 for severity.
