Early parenthood support for vulnerable families in the community
Families received antenatal and postnatal parenting support. This initiative won the Nursing in the Community category in the 2024 Nursing Times Awards. Abstract In response to factors including the high rate and poor predicted outcomes of children in care in Blackpool, the Early Parenthood Service was established. It offers tailored parenting support for vulnerable families during the antenatal and postnatal period.
Hypergraphic
She was writing literature in the minor key saying things like this story doesn't belong to me. And somewhere in the opening bars of her magnum opus from beneath clouds of obscurity, came her focus. Sometimes she felt like a prophet drafting notes full of thoughts she had no stake in crafting. Letting the words, through her course from an unknown, unattributable source. It was here on the tabletop she composed the words and phrases that juxtaposed.
ASU Public History partners with Eastern Arizona Museum to document lost history
Nearly 150 miles southeast from Arizona State University’s Tempe campus sits the town of Pima, Arizona. Nestled within the Gila River Valley and established by Mormon settlers in 1879, Pima was a thriving boomtown at the turn of the 20th century due to its industries in mining, agriculture and cattle.
A Pawn to Stillness
I am six years-old and I am sat bolt upright, stock-still on the sofa in my family home. I am wearing a lovely peach party dress that I am only allowed to wear a couple of times a year. It is for best, and I am waiting to go a family party. I have party hair – half my hair is in a fancy clip on my head and lots of hairspray. I MUST NOT MOVE AN INCH. So much as a mark on my dress or a crease will result in Big Trouble. A Good Hiding.
Ultraviolence
I’ve been thinking about violence. Ha. Not committing it – don’t worry. I’ve been thinking about who defines what is violence and what isn’t. I think the word and how we define it is important, as we move through late-stage capitalism. So much of what we’ve been led to believe is violence, isn’t. And a lot of what we experience in our day-to-day lives is violence, but it’s never defined as such. In this sense we all suffer a kind of institutional gaslighting.
Easily Led
I am given the evening meal my mother has decided I will eat. I sit at the place at the table that has been designated for me. If we have guests, I must take the stool, and perch on the corner. “What do you want to do today?” is asked during the school holidays, but the question never reaches me. My older siblings get first dibs. The TV is showing Top of the Pops and my sisters groan and pull a face when Wet Wet Wet comes on stage. They make gagging noises and change channels.
Look where my Mickey Mouse degree got me
[Memoir, Comment] It is 1998 and I am 16 years old, listening to my family discuss Mickey Mouse degrees at the dinner table. I am mildly invested in the discussion. A few of my friends have picked Theatre Studies as an A-level and subsequently discovered the Oxbridge academia route doesn’t recognise this qualification because it’s not a core subject.
An engagement with convention
Julia Taylor · Follow 4 min read · -- I am seven years old. Mousy brown hair, high forehead, freckles, green eyes. There are three oddballs in my school year and I am one of them. I never give the right answers when I’m asked questions. I never behave the way I’m expected to. I sit open legged with a lollop and I’m constantly told watch your body language, Julia. I’m invariably in Big Trouble.
The vice of anonymity
I have traversed the UK and come back home again – seeking the familiarity only solitude can give. Julia Taylor · Follow 3 min read · -- Photo by bryan priestley on Unsplash I am seventeen and I am having an affair with a man eight years older than me. He is married and he works at my college. We both understand the risks.
Human Doing
[Prose] Julia Taylor · Follow 3 min read · -- Photo by Scott Umstattd on Unsplash Wake up, let the dog out, put the kettle on. Make the dog’s breakfast, let him in. Feed the tortoise. Take the brew upstairs to him. Wake the eldest, make her breakfast, remind her to brush her teeth. Sit down for a moment, read the headlines, gobble a bagel and coffee. Plait her hair and get her out of the door to the bus. Upstairs, dress the youngest, get him juice, make his breakfast.
Notes on Womanhood
[Comment] Julia Taylor · Follow 3 min read · -- I am 11 years old and I catch a council-issue minibus from the wilderness to primary school. All the girls in my year are reading Shout! and Mizz! magazines, and I am seething because their Mums buy them for them, and my prudish Mum would simply never. I don’t even ask her. Instead I get off the bus early at Rushton’s, the paper shop near to school. The bus driver is flustered about letting a child off before the school gates, but I plead with him.
Jacquerie - chapter two
[Fiction] Julia Taylor · Follow 8 min read · -- “Alana!” “ALANA!” Who was it shouting? Wait. What? Oh. Alana rubbed her eyes and looked up. It was Kerry, a girl she’d not seen since school, a couple of years ago. What is Kerry doing here? “I thought you were going to miss your stop,” Kerry says. Alana starts. She’d fallen asleep on the 36 night bus. Oh shit. Oh it’s ok. She jumps up and presses the bell. “Thanks, Kerry. Really appreciate you waking me.” She says breathlessly.
Keep lifting the veil
[Comment] Julia Taylor · Follow 5 min read · -- I wrote a while ago about how human evolution couldn’t keep pace with the horrors we are show on social media on a regular basis. I stand by the idea that the human brain has simply not evolved quickly enough to see the pace of horror, respond to it with empathy and self-regulate, and it’s why we’re quite often at our limit or depressed by the news agenda.
Jacquerie
A New Year’s resolution of mine has been, quietly, to give some fiction a go. I’ve been listening to She Drew The Gun’s ‘Revolution of Mind’, and with this in mind drafted the plot synopsis of Jacquerie. Writing it in a periodical style like this is intentional – to keep me accountable – although history will be the judge of whether this approach has been effective! Comments are, as usual, welcomed.
What’s next for world domination?
Once you realise that everything is connected, there’s no going back. Julia Taylor · Follow 3 min read · -- I’ve always had a low-level grumbling about eco issues. I like to save the planet and hug trees where I can. I thought Greta was pretty cool. I’ve always been pretty left-wing. My Dad was a anti-colonial communist and socialist values were always up for discussion in my home growing up. Pious as it sounds, when I found out about apartheid when I was a young child, I was mortified, devastated.
Developing nations are least responsible for climate change but cop it worst. Will the COP29 climate talks tackle this injustice?
5 hours ago An environmental group has advised the Welsh government to create dog-free zones in an effort to make the outdoors less racist and more inclusive. A report by the Climate Cymru BAME identified a series of proposals, including the creation of "dog-free areas in local green spaces." The reason for the …
Climate change: Women's role in the economy is key to a just transition
The realities of climate change are hitting home for many people living in the Global South. Food security, water access and health have been jeopardized by increased temperatures, extreme weather events and sea level rise. In many places, women are the primary caregivers for children, the sick or the elderly, as well as being responsible for cooking and cleaning in the household. This kind of work can be described as care work, which is often unpaid or underpaid.
Attention Seeker (2001)
Julia Taylor · Follow 8 min read · -- I am holding my breath. I am waiting for a phone call on my little black mobile phone. My first phone. Claire and I had planned our trip to Ghana and paid for everything, and then she realised she’d lost her passport. She has managed to get a new one from the office in Liverpool, and now she is in London, queueing at the Ghanian embassy trying to get a last-minute visa. We fly in two days. Eventually she calls, breathlessly walking back to Euston for her train.

Climate change: Care for humans, other species and the natural environment is the key to a just transition
Communities across the world are facing two worsening crises: a climate crisis and a care crisis. The evidence and urgency on the climate crisis has been expertly illustrated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The root cause of this crisis is the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is due to excessive exploitation of fossil fuels, deforestation and industrial processes.

Attention Seeker (2013-2015)
Julia Taylor · Follow 8 min read · -- I am undesirable. My daughter was conceived in April 2012. When I am around six months pregnant I ask my husband why we have not been intimate since, and he tells me he is still grieving the death of his mother a few months earlier. He needs time. I am remembering how several years earlier my Grandma died.
