Post Pesach Chametz Fest
We got through Passover and now if you are anything like me the fifth question you are posing is; how do I consume as much flour, yeast, wheat and grains in one normal meal? Can I have a pizza topped with pasta or a slice of cake adorned with a big chocolate chip cookie? The answer is yes, but I think we can devise a more palatable way to refuel and bounce back from the matzo coma we are all experiencing. How does, crispy fried chicken with a golden crust and juicy tender meat sound?
Make Raspberry Linzer Tarts in Westchester This Winter
Cookies are an integral part of the holidays in Westchester County. For food lovers, options run the gamut from the classic chocolate chip to the more seasonal eggnog or peppermint. Of course, while cookies are ideal for any point during the holiday season, they hold a particular appeal when it’s time for those annual cookie swaps. As any past cookie swap participant can attest, the key to standing out is presenting a cookie that is just unique enough while still being approachable.
Survivors’ Stories-and Recipes
It might seem incongruous to include the word food in the title of a book about Holocaust survivors. Prior to writing this book, I would have agreed. I would think it insensitive, almost cruel, to discuss recipes in the context of such a horrific time when food was scarce and starvation prevalent. Yet after speaking to “my” survivors, I came to realize that memories of food led them to hope, and hope fed their resilience—hence the title.

Heinz Baked Beans Are An Integral Part Of Our Jewish American History
Reach into your pantry and you will most likely find a can of the iconic Heinz Vegetarian Baked Beans. It’s a popular cookout side dish, the perfect add-in with franks and its vegetarian status means it contains no meat as many other types of baked beans commonly do. You might not know, however, that this humble legume was a trailblazer in the world of kosher food. The 20th century Jewish community saw tremendous growth in population and with that came two interesting camps in food choices.
Franks and Beans
Not every grocery carries them, but I am a big fan of using cocktail franks in my franks and beans “recipe” I use the term recipe very loosely, as I am almost embarrassed labeling it such. You could literally open a can of Heinz vegetarian baked beans and cook them in a saucepan with cocktail franks and you’d have a winner, winner, wiener dinner. But let’s chef it up a bit. Inside Coney Island’s Hot Dog Wars
The setting was Coney Island within the early 1900s. The characters have been creative, shrewd, cutthroat, and aggressive. The story was meaty and juicy, with glitzy and glamorous celebrities influencing the plot. No, this isn’t a pitch for an HBO status drama or Oscar-nominated biopic.

Simple homemade gravlax
Lox (Yiddish for salmon) is a ubiquitous Jewish staple in New York City, often paired with a schmear of cream cheese on a bagel. The thinly sliced lox is salty and buttery with a subtle hint of smokiness that pairs beautifully with the soft tanginess of the cream cheese. Delicately prepared on top of a bagel – and sometimes topped with capers or red onion – it’s a wonderfully satisfying breakfast that’s hard to beat. But it’s not the only way to get your salmon fix in the city.
Simple homemade gravlax
Step 1 Have your fishmonger cut two pieces of salmon that match up so that you can lay one on top of the other. Step 2 Cover a portion of your counter with enough plastic wrap to lay the salmon pieces down and then wrap them up. Place the salmon side by side, skin side down on the wrap. Step 3 Drizzle each piece with 1tbsp of chilled vodka. Mix the salt and sugar and sprinkle both pieces with the mixture. Season with freshly cracked black pepper.
How and Why Candy and Jewish Immigrants Became Intrinsically Entwined
There’s a good reason Jews have a sweet tooth. In today’s world the term “sweet tooth” cannot be easily defined. For fans of Netflix’ epic adventure series with the same name, it is an apocalyptic view of the world that features a soulful child who is part human and part deer.

Why You Want to Make or Buy Rotisserie Chicken More Often

What was once a necessary cooking method requiring nothing more than meat, fire and a big stick has now become all the rage in the best markets and butcher shops. Walk down any main street and you will see large rotisserie ovens turning and churning out freshly roasted kosher chicken, juices dripping down the window pane and appetites growing with every step.

July 4th Kosher Recipe Ideas
Fourth of July is all about celebrating liberty and freedom, and for many home cooks, that means independence from a hot kitchen and endless pots and pans. It’s also a great time to make the most of the season’s bounty, including fresh herbs straight from your garden and sweet summer fruit. Chimichurri Argentineans know steak, and when they decide that marinating and smothering their steak in a bright green garlicky sauce is a good idea, you know it must be true.
Blintz recipe that survived the Holocaust
Cheese blintzes are a popular dish throughout the year. (Getty Images) This article originally appeared on The Nosher. Long associated with Ashkenazi cooking, the light and airy hug of the blintz pancake envelops pillowy fillings such as whipped farmer’s cheese or fruit compote. To call it a crepe is like calling chicken soup consommé. It sounds more fancy, but it lacks the tradition and warmth. For Florence Tabrys, a Holocaust survivor, blintzes were a lifeline to her former life near Radom, Poland.

Yogurt: The Food You Should Be Eating (and Making) Now
Photo courtesy of Unsplash Yogurt has been a food fad trending for millenniums, with scholars believing our Neolithic ancestors were the first to discover and devour it.It fueled the armies of Genghis Kahn, cured the King of France of a very sour stomach (and disposition) and was labeled a “cure for old age” by a Nobel Prize winning scientist in the early 1900s.
Now More Than Ever, Passover Is a Time for Tradition
A plague strikes and causes people to disperse, a sea parts to naturally enforce travel restrictions and a tribe wanders in the desert searching for food. No, that’s not a news report from April 2020, but the story of the Exodus more than 5,700 years ago. What ties those ancient occurrences to today’s new normal are not the miraculous events, but rather the traditions that grew out of that search for freedom.
