David Macfarlane obituary
My father, David Macfarlane, who has died aged 92, was the consummate artist and educator, utterly committed to his own practice and to sharing his passion for the arts. From 1966 until 1989 he was a lecturer in fine art at Somerset College of Arts and Technology, in Taunton, where his teachings encompassed his interests in avant-garde film, poetry, classical and modern music and literature, interwoven with the history of art.
Closing Loopholes Bill: Gig economy provisions still subject to change
The Albanese government’s Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes) Bill 2023 (Bill) contained several proposed changes concerning gig economy workers. First tabled in September 2023, the Bill seeks to make conditions fairer for ‘employee-like workers’ who do not benefit from minimum entitlements under the National Employment Standards (NES). Specifically, the Bill proposes to introduce minimum standards for employee-like workers who obtain work via a digital labour platform.

What I wish I’d known before becoming a dad
Reading Time: 2 minutes We asked dads what they wish they’d known before they had kids and their brutally honest answers were eye-opening. Ditch the book You can read a million books on development and what to expect but here’s the thing: the baby hasn’t read the book so he doesn’t know that he’s meant to be sleeping through the night at six months, or have mastered the pincer grasp at 9 months.

Local news outlets were targeted in Facebook’s smear campaign against TikTok
Facebook hired a large consulting firm to undermine its competitor TikTok, The Washington Post’s Taylor Lorenz and Drew Harwell reported in an eye-popping scoop on Wednesday. The secret campaign specifically targeted local reporters to help amplify questionable claims about the platform. It seems many local outlets couldn’t resist the bait.
With cable subscribers on the decline, CNN makes a big bet on streaming with CNN+
CNN has called its new subscription-based service “the most important launch for CNN since Ted Turner launched the network in June of 1980.” At a recent media-themed conference, a panelist from CNN+ started by asking the room — mostly Harvard Business School students — how many paid for cable. Only a few hands went into the air. That, she said, was why CNN was going big with its new streaming service.
Why Telegram - despite being rife with Russian disinformation - became the go-to app for Ukrainians
Many Russians, in light of the Kremlin’s crackdown of independent media, are also turning to the messaging app for information. For weeks, Russia’s military assault on Ukraine has been complemented by full-fledged information warfare. The Kremlin has propagandized Russian state media, and is trying to control the narrative online too.
Why Telegram became the go-to app for Ukrainians amid war with Russia
(The Conversation) For weeks, Russia’s military assault on Ukraine has been complemented by full-fledged information warfare. The Kremlin has propagandised Russian state media, and is trying to control the narrative online too. We’ve seen a bombardment of “imposter content" circulating – including fake news reports and deepfake videos – while Ukranians and the rest of the world have scrambled to find ways to tell the real story of the invasion.

How maps show - and hide - key information about the Ukraine war
“The everyday experiences of civilians on the ground in this war remain elusive in these maps.” “All maps are lies,” my colleague, geographer David Salisbury, says. He’s right. All maps are inherently incomplete, focusing on certain subjects and areas to the exclusion of others. These are crucial aspects of rhetoric, the field I study. Every map distorts the world, whether it’s of a local area or the whole Earth.
How can journalism get better at covering climate change? Being a bummer might help
A new study of social media about a climate change conference found journalists’ negative tweets gained far more traction with users than positive ones. That’s one of the findings in this new collection of research into climate journalism. The structures of journalism are pretty good at covering some things, pretty bad at covering others. Fatherland Dreamland Motherland Hinterland
May, 2010: The first thing I said to my therapist when I sat down in her consulting room was “I need to find out what happened to me.” Getting in touch with ‘me’, the person I know myself to be, has been a painful journey. And the journey continues with a greater knowledge of my imperial, patriarchal, brutal past. I grew up in Rhodesia, a British colony in southern Africa. My mother was an only child and was raised in Basingstoke, in the south of England.

38 Weeks Pregnant: What to Expect & Pregnancy Symptoms | BabyYumYum
The size of a baby at 38 weeks is similar to a bunch of rhubarb. They are approximately 49.3cm from the top of their head to their heel (crown-heel length). Curled up, they are 34.6cm from the top of their head to their buttocks (crown-rump length). They weigh roughly 3.2kg. As you’re approaching your due date, keep in mind that the above numbers are just based on averages. Your baby may be bigger or smaller and still be perfectly healthy.

Emulate Facebook and Netflix with the 10,000 Experiment Rule
If you’ve ever learned to play a sport or a musical instrument growing up, you’ve probably heard the phrase, “practice makes perfect.” As kids, we’re often conditioned to think that the more time we devote to learning a craft, the closer we get to perfect. Should you major in journalism? Here are stories from eight working journalists who didn’t
Aug. 2, 2018, 10:40 a.m. “If you decide that maybe journalism school isn’t a great fit for you, then take every opportunity to build up the skills that you will need in journalism outside of your curriculum.” The first time Emily Kask, 24, tried journalism school, it didn’t work out. She’d never thrived in an academic environment, and she felt a complete lack of support from school administrators and mentors.

Editor’s Note: We’re wrapping up 2011 by asking some of the smartest people in journalism what the new year will bring. Next up is Vadim Lavrusik, Journalist Program Manager at Facebook. Scale in Sculpture: The Sixties and Henry Moore: Rothenstein Lecture – Tate Papers | Tate
Fig.1 Henry Moore’s passport, issued in 1955 Courtesy The Henry Moore Foundation, Much Hadham © The Henry Moore Foundation The place to begin this essay is with the artist it is built around: Henry Moore. Yet despite this tight focus, its aim is not to retell a perhaps too-familiar life but instead to summon a more neutral version of the man. Enter Moore, then, in his identity as a British citizen (fig.1), a status that won him the right to travel freely in the post-war world.
