How “Window Box Activism” Shaped Philly
It’s that time of year when Philadelphia rowhome owners with green thumbs fastidiously attend to their window boxes — selecting new plants to design an artful blend of colors, shapes and textures. Sonja Dümpelmann is a historian of landscapes and the built environment who lived in Philly from 2019 to 2023.

Fewer deaths, new substances and evolving treatments in Philly’s opioid epidemic − 4 essential reads Original
In Philadelphia, fatal overdoses are the No. 3 cause of death after heart disease and cancer. That’s been the case each year since 2016, except in 2020 and 2021 when COVID-19 deaths outpaced overdose deaths. The vast majority of fatal overdoses in Philly involve the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Data on overdose deaths in Philly in 2024 is not yet available. However, new research shows that drug deaths are dropping in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The pandemic is changing the way young people eat and how they feel about their bodies: 4 essential reads
Emerging viruses can adversely affect women’s health, leading to an increase in both complications and deaths during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium. This is indicated by a population-based natural experiment on the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic and conducted on the basis of national vital Argentine records of maternal deaths. The research was published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas.
The pandemic is changing the way young people eat and how they feel about their bodies: 4 essential reads
Kids, like adults, cope with stress and anxiety in many different ways. For example, while some children reach for more snacks to deal with uncomfortable feelings, others overexercise or restrict their eating in unhealthy ways. As a result, rates of obesity and eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia have both increased among young people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are four recent articles from The Conversation’s archives that deal with kids, body weight and the COVID-19 pandemic. 1.

Immigration Crisis
The heated national debate about immigration is having a profound impact on many students and their teachers. Students who are fearful family members might be deported, traumatized by experiences back home and on their journey here, and worried about their own futures, are having trouble coping. In this series, The Hechinger Report examines how teachers and administrators are doing their best to help them focus on their school work and navigate a difficult political time.

White House Decries Physicians Committee's Poster, Which Mentions Obama Girls
The posters went up last week, 14 in Union Station. On each of the large displays, a thought bubble rises up from a picture of a beautiful 8-year-old: "President Obama's daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don't I?" A Washington nonprofit that advocates nutrition-policy reform paid $20,000 to get its message across and carefully maneuvered Metro's tangle of regulations to display its posters. Metro gave it a go -- but the White House did not, according to the group.
Mexico Soda Tax
There’s a certain irony to Coca-Cola’s expansion of its hugely popular “Share a Coke” advertising campaign in Mexico. The rollout includes soda cans personalized with names like Luis and Gabriela, including versions with names printed in Braille. Mexico consumes more soda per capita than any other country, and research links sugary drinks to obesity and diabetes, a leading cause of death in Mexico. And blindness. More than 14 million Mexicans have diabetic retinopathy, which impairs vision.
The Aztec superfood fighting Mexican obesity
They’re traditional sweets, made from popped amaranth seeds, specked with peanuts and raisins, offered in flavors that run from coconut to Neapolitan, choco-mint to strawberry. The alegrías (which means “joy”) catch customers’ eyes with snow-cone-bright colors and cotton candy pastels. So it’s hard to align this sweet snack with its culinary history, based on an ancient grain believed to have been used in Aztec sacrifices of young virgins.
Baseball's Brand New Soundtrack
"Yes I do feel a lot of pressure, man,” says Philadelphia closer Jonathan Papelbon, who played six seasons with the Boston Red Sox before the Phillies signed him as a free agent in November, making him the highest paid reliever in baseball. “It’s like, holy cow.” Papelbon isn't talking about delivering on his four-year, $50 million contract, staring down an All-Star slugger, or living up to the expectations of Philadelphia's notoriously demanding fans.
