Iran says Hormuz is closed again as talks With US set to proceed

Iran said it has closed the Strait of Hormuz for shipping transit due to what it called Israel’s violation of a ceasefire, even as Pakistan said United States-Iran talks were set to open in Switzerland on Sunday. The Hormuz action casts a new cloud over the talks, which are aimed at permanently ending a conflict that’s thrown the Middle East into disarray.

Luxembourg will be under a red weather alert as of Monday, owing to “exceptionally high temperatures”, the country’s body that assesses severe weather said on Saturday. “The exceptionally high temperatures forecast throughout next week indicate a heatwave of unusual intensity and duration, with an expected impact on the population as well as on the operation of emergency and healthcare services,” the Severe Weather and Flood Assessment Unit (CERI) said in a press release.

Luxembourg police this week arrested three more people in Nice, France suspected of being involved in the €61 million Caritas fraud scandal, the public prosecutor’s office said on Friday. In July 2024 it was revealed that millions had disappeared from the accounts of aid organisation Caritas in Luxembourg. The fraud raised questions about governance of non-profit organisations, bank oversight, regulatory scrutiny and the robustness of the country’s financial safeguards.
