Math Professor is First at UML to Win Radcliffe Fellowship

Mathematics Professor James Propp is the first UMass Lowell faculty member to win a prestigious yearlong research fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Propp says that twice, he applied for the fellowship when he had a sabbatical year coming up. But after his second rejection, he calculated that if he only applied once every eight years, the probability that he would win one of the fellowships was low to none. So he began applying every year.

Director of UTeach Program Wins Manning Prize

Education Clinical Professor Sumudu Lewis ’15, who directs the UTeach program, an education minor that prepares undergraduate STEM majors for teaching careers, found out on her birthday that she had been awarded this year’s Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching. “It came as a real surprise,” Lewis says. “It was a wonderful birthday.” At the time, Lewis was in Taiwan with other university faculty and staff members to see how they could partner with National Pingtung University.

Young Alumni Win Fulbright Student Awards

For the first time in nearly a half century, three recent graduates of UMass Lowell have won Fulbright U.S. Student Program Awards to do research and teach abroad. The Fulbright awards are available to graduating college seniors, graduate students and young professionals, who can use them to pursue graduate study, conduct research or teach English overseas. The last UMass Lowell graduate to win a Fulbright U.S. Student Award was Susan A. Bosworth, in 1979, to study ethnomusicology in Poland.
