Deprogrammed with Keri Smith
Dolly has died. Two friends texted me about it. It brought tears. I’ll try to tell you why. My favorite movie is Dolly Parton’s 1986 Smoky Mountain Christmas. Made for TV, it imprinted itself on my mind as a child, so much so that in college I bought a bootleg Japanese DVD copy, long before you could get it in this country. I’ve worn the DVD out over the years, bringing it out every Christmas to show new people and see it fresh through their eyes.
From Doubt to Dominance: Landry Wins Again
For Tenosh Landry, winning once was proof she belonged. Winning again proved something deeper that she could trust herself, her training, and the process it takes to stay on top. The biology pre-health sophomore has quickly established herself as one of the standout competitors in her program, turning hard work and resilience into back-to-back success in the high jump. “It means a lot,” Landry said. “I work so hard, and sometimes I get in my head.
A Race to Remember: Record Falls in the 100-Meter Dash
A new program record in the 100-meter dash usually comes with bold predictions, carefully planned goals, and an intense focus on the clock. But Jordyn Minor, a junior nursing major, told a different story, one built on trust, patience, and a mindset that prioritized growth over pressure. In a race defined by fractions of a second, it wasn’t just speed that made the difference, but a shift in perspective. “The record did in fact surprise me,” Minor said.
A breakout season, a bigger future
For Presha Shanthamoorthi, being named Freshman of the Year means a lot after her first season playing college tennis. The award reflects the work she put in throughout the year and gives her confidence moving forward as she continues her career. “Honestly, it means everything,” Shanthamoorthi said. “I worked so hard this year and to get recognized for it feels amazing.
Stronger Together: Beach Volleyball Duo Shines with All-Conference Honors
For the beach volleyball pair Amaya Bazemore, a graduate student studying psychological science, and Isabella Rodrigue, a junior criminal justice major, being named All-Conference wasn’t just about stats, it was about growth, resilience, and proving something to themselves. “It’s a big accomplishment,” Bazemore said. “If you asked me two years ago if I’d be doing this, I would’ve laughed.
Player of the year: built on strategy, driven by growth
With a calm demeanor and a strategic mind, this year’s Super Smash Bros Player of the Year Malachi Lee, a sophomore business major, has proven that success in competitive gaming is about more than just quick reflexes; it’s about discipline, patience, and growth. After earning the title, he described the moment with humility rather than ego. “It felt incredible,” he said.
Senior’s 32 Wins Mark a Career Defined by Consistency
The number 32 might look simple on paper, but for one senior tennis player, it represents years of growth, resilience, and transformation. Hippolyte De Preville is a senior majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship, he didn’t arrive at college chasing records or recognition. When he first stepped onto the court as a freshman, his mindset was straightforward. “I just played the way I wanted, tried my hardest, and tried to be the best teammate I could.” De Preville said.
Chasing himself: Sergio Martinez Sanz rewrites Loyola record books
Categories: March 20, 2026 Records are meant to be broken, but it’s rare when the same athlete keeps doing the breaking. For Sergio Martinez Sanz, a sophomore computer science major from Madrid, Spain, the biggest competition this season hasn’t been the swimmers in the lanes beside him. It has been himself. After narrowly missing a program record by less than a second last year, Martinez Sanz entered this season motivated to close that gap.
Baseball coach reaches 600 career wins
At most programs, reaching 600 career wins would be marked by ceremonies, trophies and statistics. But for Loyola Wolf Pack baseball head coach Jeremiah Kennedy, the number itself carries less importance than the people and lessons behind it. “To be perfectly honest, it’s kind of a weird number to think about,” Kennedy said, adding that the milestone was never a goal in itself. Instead, he said he became a coach to build a strong culture and help young players live principled lives.
March Madness begins
Categories: March 14, 2026 Every spring, sports fans across the country fill out brackets and make bold predictions for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Known as March Madness, the tournament has become one of the most exciting events in sports because of its unpredictability. The single-elimination format means that anything can happen. A lower seeded team can defeat a powerhouse program in just one game, instantly becoming the story of the tournament.
Homecoming win: The second to last home game
The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up wins during Thursday’s homecoming games at The Den, completing a sweep in front of a large crowd. The women’s team played first in the afternoon and controlled the game early. Loyola scored on its first two possessions and created separation with defensive pressure. The Wolf Pack forced turnovers in the opening minutes and converted those opportunities into points on the other end.
Runner honored by conference second time
Jace Luckoski was named Southern States Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season during the fall of 2025. Luckoski earned the award after another consistent season in SSAC competition, where he remained one of the top finishers across multiple meets and continued to serve as a key scorer for his team. The Athlete of the Year honor is awarded to the conference runner who demonstrates the strongest overall performance throughout the season.
Loyola Rugby begins recruiting for program's first season

Familiar face takes over volleyball program
Loyola New Orleans announced Jan. 12 that its assistant volleyball coach would be taking over as head coach as the team prepares to go into its beach season. Jenna Ibieta has been a presence for the Wolf Pack team since July of 2025, first virtually then in person. Before joining the wolfpack, she worked at a small private catholic middle/ high school in Lafayette while also coaching the volleyball team.
Point shaving scandal rocks college basketball
A federal investigation into alleged point shaving in college basketball has brought national attention to multiple National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I programs, including several universities in Louisiana. According to reporting by CBS News and CBS Sports, federal prosecutors have charged more than two dozen individuals in connection with an alleged betting conspiracy involving players from at least 17 Division I programs.
New year, new games for the Wolf Pack
Loyola University New Orleans athletics have remained active since mid-December, with Wolf Pack teams continuing conference play, recording program developments, and preparing for the spring portion of the 2025–26 season. As the fall semester concluded and the spring semester approached, multiple Loyola programs remained engaged in competition or administrative activity during the winter break. The men’s basketball team competed in several games during the period.

Each of these student athletes has taken a unique journey to Loyola, but all share the same goal of making an impact on and off the court.
Why NOW is the moment to protest
IMAGE COURTESY OF KERI TIETJEN SMITh There comes a moment in every generation when silence is no longer neutral. When staying home, staying quiet, staying comfortable… isn’t safety. It’s complicity. And friends, this is that moment. We are not here today because we love to fight. We are here because we love this country too much not to. We are here because the truth still matters. Because character still matters. Because democracy, messy and flawed and sacred, still matters.

Guardians of Trust: Navigating Cybersecurity in Banking
Despite significant investments in cybersecurity, customers lack trust in the banking system’s ability to protect their data. "Trust is the bedrock of business.
Unlocking the value of generative AI in commercial payments
The use of AI in the payments industry is not a new phenomenon. In fact, Accenture’s recent Payments Technology Reinvention Study shows that leading banks are already investing significantly in AI and generative AI and have managed to automate 40% of manual tasks in their payments business. Advancements in speech recognition, image generation and machine learning have allowed AI to support innovation across a range of payment use cases (figure 1).
AI in Wealth Management: All Systems Go
Preparing for the move to AI Mapping out an AI roll-out requires a strategic mindset. We’ve identified three critical favourable factors to help improve a wealth management firm’s ability to scale, overcome typical roadblocks, and help the team realize AI’s full benefit: Focus on seeing a single use case or program through to the end: Aim for an approach driven by a clearly defined business strategy, not by the technology.
Becoming Parentless
It’s extra crazy since we were the generation left largely on our own through childhood. Housing costs, college costs, inflation, a post-pandemic medical care crisis, the sudden death of my 68-year-old dad, and three layoffs in four years. It’s destroyed any chance I had in retirement and opened my eyes to the healthcare crisis that our generation faces, as our Boomer parents are starting to die unusually young, compared to their Greatest Generation parents.

Five key success factors for commercial banks to scale generative AI
Ella Fitzgerald was one of the first, in the ‘30s, to have a hit with the song ‘Ain’t What You Do, It’s the Way That You Do It’. The fact that legions of musicians have and continue to record it tells me there’s a universal truth there that most people recognize. This is certainly the case with generative AI. Using the innovation is cheap and easy.
Key considerations for North American retail banks amid ongoing uncertainty
In May of 2024, the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights were on full display for the largest proportion of the United States in decades. The Northern Lights are caused by geomagnetic flairs or “solar storms” from the sun, which can lead to extremely disruptive events on Earth. In 2003, an extreme solar storm knocked out power in parts of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.
How banks can reimagine a winning loyalty strategy | Accenture Banking Blog Original
How loyal are your customers? And do they feel truly rewarded for their ongoing relationship with your bank? According to recent Accenture research, banking customers view loyalty as a two-way street: they are open to being loyal to one primary bank, but they want their bank to recognize and reward this loyalty. And while the majority of banks claim to be customer-centric, less than 15% actually reward customers for their holistic relationship with a bank.
The generative AI revolution in capital markets
Check out any news website these days, and you’re likely to see a story about generative AI. With OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard achieving rapid growth in users, there’s a widespread expectation that such tools will radically change how people worldwide live and work. But what are their implications for capital markets firms? The simple answer is that generative AI will be game-changing for the industry.
Living Unbelievably-Part 1
"You have chosen a different path." I kept saying to myself, as I frustratedly packed the final items in my ridiculously large suitcases. It was 2022, and I was totally unsure what I was doing at this juncture of my life, but at least feeling confident in the familiarity of that feeling, as no one else I knew really did either. It wasn't my first rodeo with leaving the States on a grand adventure.
Commercial banks must now focus on fundamentals Original
Having pulled through the Covid pandemic, the unravelling of international supply chains and a global energy crunch, commercial banks must now grapple with a spike in interest rates and the collapse of some high-profile peer institutions. Rarely have I seen the banking industry in such flux and uncertainty. How should banks respond? My advice: Pause … take stock … focus on the fundamentals. Shifts in the global macro market prompted many banks to start the year cautiously.

How to Talk With People Who Disagree With You
Last night on Deprogrammed I tried something a little different. I talked with Hunter Avallone, a YouTuber who says he has moved from the right to the left, in an attempt to first judge his sincerity and secondly to find out where we overlap, if at all. I have a lot of conversations like this off camera, with people who don't agree with me or sometimes don't even understand my opinions (or vice versa).
How to Overcome Advisor Resistance to AI-Generated Insights
By Scott Reddel and Keri Smith, Accenture March 3, 2022 3:41 pm ET Today’s clients increasingly expect more personalized financial advice and offerings, including products that cut across wealth, insurance, and banking and that align with their social values. But advisors appear to be struggling to meet these expectations. In a recent survey conducted by our firm, more than half the investors we canvassed said that the financial advice they receive from their advisor was too generic.

Endurance in the Coming Race
What can they take from you that you fear losing? Cast off your weights. “You only have power over people as long as you don’t take everything away from them. But when you’ve robbed a man of everything, he’s no longer in your power — he’s free again.” - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Thank you, Maree Buscke, for reminding me of this quote. There is so much left that they can take, and yet, if you don’t fear losing it, their power over you diminishes. There is nothing they can take from me that I fear losing.

A Liberal for Trump
I’m voting for Trump because the Democratic Party is no longer liberal. Hello, my name is Keri and I’m a liberal who is voting for Donald Trump. A little background, I used to be a “Social Justice Warrior.” For 20 years I was a true believer, who preached this evil ideology, fully convinced that it was the way to end racism and sexism. It took me two decades to realize it IS racism. It IS sexism.
What It's Like to Be One of the Millions of Newly Unemployed Americans
The bar where I work shuttered mid-shift on Friday the 13th, abruptly furloughing all of its staff around 6 p.m. I got the news from a friend working the shift, and then got the email clarifying that we were furloughed immediately so that we could apply for unemployment. I realized this morning that today, Thursday the 26th, is the longest I’ve been off work in over 10 years. This is more time off than I even took for my wedding, or my honeymoon.

Dear Knit and Nibble (James McIntosh and Dr. Thomas Ernst),
(James McIntosh and Dr. Thomas Ernst) An Explanation of the SJW Knitting Mobbing You’re About to Experience You’re probably wondering how you ended up here. There’s a mob of puritanical, authoritarian bullies in the online knitting world, who viciously attempt to spread their ideology via pile-ons of impotent rage at anyone who achieves any level of success without bowing and genuflecting to their cult.

On Leaving the SJW Cult and Finding Myself
I've been undergoing a pretty significant change in the way I interpret the world and how to 'be' in it. As I've grappled with how to understand my shifting perspective, I've found that writing down my thoughts has helped to put them in some kind of order, so this is an attempt to continue doing that.
30 Cakes to Eat Naked
'I don't know how my pictures happen, they just do. They exist, but for the life of me I can't explain them'. Beryl Cook began to paint during the 1960s and became a local phenomenon in Cornwall, England where she lived with her family, but it wasn't until 1975 that she first exhibited her work. Her appeal was classless and she rapidly became Britain's most popular artist. She was a 'heart and soul' painter, compelled to paint with a passion.
