CSUB students make efforts to protect kit fox populations on campus
California State University of Bakersfield (CSUB) is home to the endangered kit fox species and the San Joaquin Kit Fox Society. The group aims to protect and preserve the kit fox population currently taking shelter on campus. The Kit Fox Society is comprised of CSUB students from different backgrounds who started meeting as recently as April in response to the outrage from the community over the animal’s treatment.
Uranium Mining Might Come Back to the Grand Canyon
On March 28, 2017, President Trump signed an executive order asking federal agencies to review policies "that potentially burden the development or use of domestically produced energy resources, with particular attention to oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy resources." Last week, the National Forest Service released its own report with 15 recommended agency changes to comply with the order. Among them: bring back Uranium mining in land near the Grand Canyon.
What is the origin of "daemon" with regards to computing?
Daemon has an interesting usage in computing. From my local dictionary: a background process that handles requests for services such as print spooling and file transfers, and is dormant when not required Does anyone know where this came from? I assume its relation to the word demon is notable. My dictionary also lists daemon as an archaic form of demon. Why did computing use daemon instead of demon?
HU NBT CAFD Missing After Dealership I-Rap Session
Joined Jun 4, 2013 · 17 Posts Discussion Starter · #1 · 2 d ago My 2017 F15 Navigation went into theft protection mode (according to the dealer) so I dropped it off with them to get them to fix it and they were having a hard time with it. After a week of trying they said they had to call BMW HQ to do an "I Rap" session at which point it was unlocked. Which is great, but the bad part is that it seems to have knocked out the CAFD file from being in the ESYS programming options.
Is it proper to use the word "bandwidth" as it relates to time allotment?
7 I'm a web developer and I've often heard other technical and developer types say: Sorry, I don't have the bandwidth to take on your project at this time. I started using the term myself and thought it was an excellent way of expressing that you don't have enough time for something. Recently, I used this term with a potential client and he interpreted it as meaning that I still had a dialup internet connection so would not be able to handle his needs.
This Treadmill Kept Me Motivated Through Every Kind Of Run
There are two universal truths I believe about running. First, if you run, you are a runner. Full stop. It doesn’t matter where, when, or what pace you run. Second, and relatedly, it doesn’t matter what you use to motivate yourself to run. The only thing that matters is that you are doing it. Sure, I would love to claim that every mile I finish comes from a burning motivation to improve my body, mind, and soul, or to get closer to nature, or find inner peace.
Runner Dresses as Tom Brady at NYC Marathon, Juggles Deflated Footballs
Barry Goldmeier doesn’t need an NFL investigation to figure out how he prefers his footballs. He’ll tell you outright that he likes them deflated. They’re much easier to toss and catch that way. Goldmeier’s known this for years. The 51-year-old hobby-joggler from Rockville, Maryland, has a penchant for finding new knick-knacks to toss in the air while running.
Scott Jurek Breaks Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike Record
At 2:03 p.m. ET on Sunday, ultramarathoner Scott Jurek crested the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine, becoming the fastest person to finish a supported thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. He completed the 2,189-mile journey in 46 days, 8 hours, and 7 minutes, breaking the previous record by just more than three hours.

How Big Hair Got These Runners on the Cover of Sports Illustrated
During the spring of 1964, Sports Illustrated covers featured the usual cadre of super (or soon to be super) stars: golfer Jack Nicklaus, lefty pitcher Sandy Koufax, the first-time national champion UCLA basketball team. Then, on April 20, with hair blown out, makeup on, and crouched in sprint positions, Janis Rinehart (foreground), Paula Walter (middle), and Jeanne Ellison (now Jeanne Ellison Biggs, right) became the first female track athletes from the U.S. to grace the cover.
Brotherly Love: How the Keflezighi Clan Feels about Its Marathon Champ
Keflezighi Family (Meb is third from the left) On Monday, April 20, it's safe to assume most of the Keflezighi siblings--there are 11 total--won't have productive mornings. But they all hope one family member will. As Meb, the fourth-oldest Keflezighi, journeys to Boylston Street, hoping to repeat his 2014 Boston Marathon victory, his brothers and sisters will keep an eye on livestreams and group texts--while trying to juggle jobs, studies, and kids.

And that can hurt your recovery. “Moving is important to keep the blood flowing,” says Runner’s World advisor Dr William O. Roberts, who is also the medical director of a marathon.

96-Year-Old Becomes Oldest Finisher of the 2015 Fifth Avenue Mile
Competition at the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City became a little tougher this year when the 70-year-old age group ran in Bill Benson’s heat. Their younger legs pushed the pace, but “that’s just the way it is,” Benson said. At 96, the Valley Stream, New York, native became the oldest person to complete the Fifth Avenue Mile in 2015. For his 16th year in a row, Benson ran the 20 blocks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the southeast corner of Central Park. He finished the race in 21:43.
99-Year-Old Upsets 92-Year-Old in Thrilling Sprint
Dixon Hemphill wishes he would have simply leaned at the finish. Maybe he didn’t do it because of lack of experience—he was, after all, the youngest of the two competitors in the race. Or maybe he didn’t do it because of his replacement hip. “I think had I leaned a little bit, I would have won,” Hemphill, 92, told Runner’s World on February 21.

World War II Marine, 96, Finishes Marathon With a Shot of Scotch
There are 100 meters of asphalt road left between Jonathan Mendes and the finish line of the New York City Marathon, and he still won’t explain exactly why he is doing this. Why, for the past 11 hours and 20 minutes this 96 year-old man has been running—well, not so much running as tottering—26.19 miles through all five of the city’s boroughs. He looks up and smiles. You can see the creases around his eyes scrunch behind massive, orange-tinted sunglasses.
When Everyone Else Is Gone, This Rowdy Crew Cheers on NYC Marathon's Final Finishers
The white barriers on the street are gone. Normal traffic has returned, with honks and idling trucks. On the brick sidewalk, a stained white poster keeps getting trampled. In faded white ink it reads, “Welcome to the Finish Line.” It’s 8:07 p.m., the sun is gone, the roads are open, and people are still finishing the New York City Marathon. A pedicab driver wearing a military-cut jacket can’t believe it. “Wait, people are still running?” he says. “Why don’t they quit?” A runner hobbles by.
Marathon-Themed Bar a Permanent Mile Marker on First Avenue
Technically, the black facade tucked below three brick stories on First Avenue in Manhattan is 100 feet shy of the 17-mile marker and water station on the course of the New York City Marathon. “But ‘Mile 16.9’ doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as well,” said Ed O’Brien, co-owner of the marathon-inspired restaurant and bar called Mile 17.

At 13, She Broke the Women's Marathon World Record. Then She Disappeared From Running
On May 6, 1967, Maureen Wilton, a 13-year-old girl from a suburb of Toronto, Canada, attempted to break the women’s marathon world record of 3:19 at a small race a few miles from her home. Under the guidance of her track coach, Sy Mah, she had already become one of Canada’s best female distance runners in races up to five miles—the farthest distance race organizers would allow women to run.

Mighty Moe | Rachel Swaby | Macmillan
Rachel Swaby and Kit Fox present Mighty Moe, the untold true story of runner Maureen Wilton, whose world record-breaking marathon time at age 13 was met first with misogyny and controversy, but ultimately with triumph. In 1967, a girl known as Mighty Moe broke the women’s world marathon record at a small race in Toronto. This was an era when girls and women were discouraged from the sport and the longest track event at the Olympics for women was 25.6 miles shorter than a marathon.
Watch: High School Cross-Country Team Takes Shelter Dogs on Training Run
Combine an animal rescue shelter full of restless dogs in southern California with a high school cross-country team winding down its summer training, and you get one obvious—and adorable—solution. So obvious, in fact, that the same idea struck the wife of the St. Joseph High School cross country coach, Luis Escobar, and the volunteer coordinator for the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter, Stacy Silva. “We have these kids who are finishing their summer workout program and we have all these dogs.
The FitGen Leader
A few years ago, Matt O’Toole took a day off running, something he hadn’t done in more than nine years. His streak of pounding through at least a mile a day turned monotonous; he felt like he really wasn’t in great shape. So, he signed up for a CrossFit gym. Around the same time, fitness apparel giant Reebok realized something; a growing number of young, educated millennials wanted to lift heavy tires, roll around in mud, and generally torture their bodies to get in better shape.
Texas Dad Leads Boston Marathon At Mile One So His Kids Could See Him On TV
Meb Keflezighi calls the Boston Marathon the "People's Olympics." That's because it's a place where athletic specimens with the highest aerobic capacities in the world do the same exact thing as an 82-year-old grandmother wearing trash bags. It's also a place where a 31-year-old father of two can lead the first mile and a half of the world’s most famous footrace, simply because his kids want to see him on TV.
Dozens Suspected of Cheating to Enter Boston Marathon
Most runners get into the Boston Marathon in one of two ways: Meet strict qualifying standards or raise thousands of dollars for charity. But some choose a third option. They cheat. That’s what a firefighter in his 50s did last year. He cut the course at his qualifying race, a marathon in 2013, submitted a time he knew was false, and took a spot at the starting line in Hopkinton in 2015. “This is absolutely deflating,” he said after Runner’s World presented evidence of his course-cutting.

Unsuspecting Runners Give an Olympian Their Boston Marathon Advice
Jared Ward, sixth place at the 2016 Olympic marathon, is clearly an accomplished runner. But Ward, 28, is running his first Boston Marathon on Monday, so he took to the streets to ask for advice from runners more familiar with the course. He took a few people by surprise.
Podcast: The Lost Story of a 13-Year-Old’s World Record
On May 6, 1967, in a suburb of Toronto, Canada, a 13-year-old girl named Maureen Wilton accomplished something extraordinary. In a marathon of 30 people, she set the women's world record, running 26.2 miles in 3:15:23. Nicknamed “Little Mo” by her track teammates, Wilton’s accomplishment should have gone down as a defining moment in running history.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey Review
What do you do when you’re three games into a new series featuring characters that are decades old and you can’t stomach the thought of coughing out the same old plot again? It takes guts, but you look deep inside yourself, or in this case, deep inside Bowser, and bingo, there is your story. Nintendo certainly went to a very weird place with Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story all those years ago, essentially combining Inner Space with Honey, I Shrunk The Kids and slapping Mario and Luigi in it.
Is Exercise Making You Fat?
Let’s forget all the diet trends, tips, hacks, advice—whatever you want to call it—for a moment. The formula for losing weight should be pretty simple: burn more calories than you consume. That means exercise should be an essential element in losing weight, right? Right? Well, as the New York Times reports and a study suggests, there’s a chance a regular exercise program could actually cause weight gain—and not from muscle, from actual fat.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy
There used to be a time where even the notion of remaking something adored by so many would be enough cause to light the torches and wave the pitchforks. For a lot of properties, this is still very much the case, but occasionally, a remake transcends the norm, resulting in the public outcry being to go ahead and do it rather than burn the developers at the stake.
LEGO DC Super-Villains
Okay, I think it’s fair to say that I’m probably fast becoming the designated LEGO guy here at Gamecloud. With my writer’s bio stating my love for the Danish building bricks since day one and various Star Wars LEGO sets dotted around my house, you can understand why every time a new LEGO game gets announced, I start grinning like a moron.
Why You Should Spend Black Friday Running, Not Shopping
While bargain hunters often run laps around big-box stores on Black Friday on shopping for deals online, Eric Rubinson will run laps on a track, raising money for charity. Track Friday is Rubinson’s antidote to the annual shopping frenzy that occurs the day after Thanksgiving. Rubinson conceived the idea after Hurricane Sandy devastated coastal areas near his home in Middletown, New Jersey, in 2012.
Where is Scott Jurek on the Appalachian Trail?
Over 2,189 miles, 14 states, and 515,000 feet of elevation change, Scott Jurek is currently attempting to become the fastest person to ever complete the Appalachian Trail. The current record, held by Jennifer Pharr Davis, stands at 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes. Jurek started at Springer Mountain in Georgia on May 27. He hopes to arrive at the trail’s end at Mount Katahdin in Maine by July 7—a 42-day journey that would shatter the current record.

Glen Raines’ loincloth is surprisingly sturdy. He sewed it himself, using tan-colored faux-fur fabric from a hobby store near his home in San Diego. It has an inner-pouch for support and is quite breathable, in part because it’s styled like a thong in the back. It’s fastened together by a small Velcro strip on the side that has yet to come undone, despite sweat or fluttering breezes or the outreached hands of overzealous marathon spectators. New Website Finds Cheapest Running Shoes on the Web, Irking Some Running Stores
The newly launched website ShoeKicker is fast, exceptionally simple to use, and does exactly what specialty running stores fear. Pitched as the “Orbitz” of running shoes, the site trawls the web to find the cheapest pair based on brand, model, and size. The idea came to 25-year-old founder, Imran Khoja, while on a run in waning Mizuno Wave Inspires. He needed a new pair but couldn’t find a store in the area with the model in his size. Woman with Terminal Illness Runs Her Last Marathon
Kim Stemple didn't want this story to be about her. She was wearing a blue singlet, still on her feet after finishing the Marine Corps Marathon in late October, when she made the request. She was holding a finisher's medal from another race with a note etched in permanent marker on the ribbon. It would go to a doctor or a sick patient or a veteran—someone, 51-year-old Stemple said, who needed recognition but was not able to finish a race.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey Review
Assassin’s Creed really is an institution at this point, isn’t it? With eleven main series games in the eleven years since its inception (over twenty if you count the handheld and mobile entries) and a plethora of extended content of questionable canonicity, such as books, comics and short films to name but a few, it’s safe to say Assassin’s Creed has done just about everything at this point. Oh, and there was that movie.
6 Things You Can’t Do at the New York City Marathon
The New York City Marathon is a time where elites are running for victory, and many others are running for the thrill. Just don’t make it too thrilling: While you may be tempted to set a wacky record instead of running for time, it’s best to check the NYRR list of Prohibited Items before lacing up and putting on your craziest costume or trying to dribble your soccer ball throughout the five-borough course.
Oldest Boston Marathon Runner Finishes With a Huge Smile
Sideways rain pelted 82-year-old Katherine Beiers’ glasses. Wind rattled against the two garbage bags she wore over a blue sweat suit. But the weather didn't bother the oldest finisher at the 2015 Boston Marathon. “Oh, that was just fantastic,” Beiers said, smiling and waving to her son and granddaughter, both waiting with a dry sweatshirt outside the barricades at the finishers' chute.
