Indy Community Pantry expands to meet food demand
Deandrea Rayner addressed food insecurity in Indianapolis by establishing the Indy Community Pantry, which launched in 2020 and has since expanded to include five dry-goods pantries and three community refrigerators throughout the city. The initiative started with Rayner filling old boxes with food. Still, the demand quickly outpaced the supply, prompting her to expand the project with the help of volunteers and donations.

VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota’s Flagship University is the first SD Board of Regents school to receive an ideas program grant. The University of South Dakota is one of 34 US colleges to receive a grant to expand study abroad programs. USD will use the grant to develop a first-year study abroad tour to study how that impacts long-term success. The U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students, or IDEAS program, started in 2016.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The 2023 Indiana State Fair has its theme: basketball. Fair organizers will team with Pacers Sports & Entertainment to help tell the story of Indiana’s history with the game. “The Indiana State Fair is an annual celebration of agriculture, entertainment, and what it means to be a Hoosier,” Gov. Eric Holcomb said at a Monday morning press conference.
Docs: Girlfriend, grandmother receive texts showing man held hostage before murder
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three people have been arrested for the murder of a man who was kidnapped, beaten and killed on the city’s east side. Court documents indicate he was killed in a dispute over a missing vehicle. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrests of 35-year-old Christina Clark, 29-year-old Josselyn Johnson and 21-year-old Jaheim Miller on Thursday night. They’re accused of being involved with the murder of 28-year-old Corbin Rogers.
City services affected by network outages
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A network outage is currently hampering city services in Indianapolis. Just before noon, the Information Services Agency sent an email to city employees notifying them of a network outage. Various city offices are without internet access or phone service and many city websites are not accessible. Employees in the City-County Building and the Criminal Justice Campus are among the affected.

UPDATE: Just before 3 a.m. Friday, the City-County Information Services Agency repaired the network outage and restored connectivity, according to Mark Bode, communications director for Mayor Joe Hogsett’s office. Internet access and phone service at city offices have been restored and city websites that were offline Thursday are now accessible. Purdue announces Ryan Walters as new football coach
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — Purdue University has announced its new head football coach. Ryan Walters will be the team’s next head coach. Walters, 36, was most recently the defensive coordinator for the University of Illinois for the 2021-22 seasons. Prior to that, he spent 2015-20 with the University of Missouri in various roles. Walters played college football at the University of Colorado as a safety from 2004-08, earning All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention as a senior.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WISH) — Two people have been charged in a murder case after prosecutors claim a man was fatally shot in a planned robbery of a small amount of marijuana. The Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office has charged 23-year-old Deamonta McIntyre and his girlfriend, 21-year-old Kee Meh, in the case. Both are listed as Indianapolis residents in court records.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called to the 8000 block of North Shadeland Avenue at 2 a.m. Sunday. Officers arrived to find a man who said he had been shot at. The victim is Ronald Sexton, best known as “Donnie Baker,” a comedian and recurring character on “The Bob & Show.” The report states that the suspect was identified but a name for the suspect is not listed.

Erica Tumbleson, 31, faces a felony charge of auto theft and two misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement. According to court documents, Tumbleson stole a man’s truck as he was inside a gas station in the 7800 block of Brookville Road just before 11:15 p.m. on Nov. 29. The man had left it unlocked with the keys in vehicle.

Penske announces new IndyCar documentary series '100 Days to Indy' to launch in 2023
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IndyCar is getting its own behind-the-scenes docuseries. “100 Days to Indy” will air on WISH-TV and other affiliates across the nation in 2023. VICE TV will also re-air the show. Produced by Penske Entertainment and VICE Media Group, the six-part series will document the lead up to “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” “The Indy 500 is the most unique, exhilarating and engaging event on the planet,” Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles said in a statement.
Westfield police investigating report of abduction attempt of child
WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Police in Westfield are investigating a report an attempted child abduction. The Westfield Police Department is checking into a report that a boy on his bike was grabbed by a man in the 700 block of Burgess Hill Pass on Wednesday afternoon. The boy said the suspect grabbed his arm after approaching him. Police describe the suspect as a white male in his 30s, 6’2″ and bald with a red goatee.
Lawrence North HS students sent home early due to fire in bathroom
LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — Students at Lawrence North High School have been sent home early after a fire in a second floor bathroom. School officials said the fire occurred late Wednesday morning but did not state the cause. All students and staff were safely evacuated from the building. Buses will be taking students home. Parents can pick their kids up at door 15 on the south end of the building. School officials will make an announcement regarding a plan for Thursday’s classes later on Wednesday.

Silver Alert issued for Columbia City man
COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WISH) — A statewide Silver Alert has been issued for a missing man from Columbia City. The Columbia City Police Department is trying to find 69-year-old Martin Berry. Berry was last seen Monday morning. Indiana State Police say he is believed to be in extreme danger and might need medical assistance. He is described as 6′ and 155 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue-green sweater and jeans.
Elkhart mayor's missing brother found dead in submerged vehicle in Michigan
STURGIS, Mich. (WISH) — Michigan State Police are investigating the death of a man found in a submerged vehicle. Authorities had been searching for 70-year-old Garvin Roberson all week, issuing a statewide Silver Alert in Indiana on Monday. Roberson, the brother of Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson, was last seen on Sunday afternoon. On Friday afternoon, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office announced he had been found in a submerged vehicle near Fawn River and White School roads in Sturgis, Mich.
Semi goes over bridge on Indiana Toll Road, catches fire
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (WISH) — A semi driver is alive after crashing a semi, leaving it dangling over a bridge on the Indiana Toll Road. According to Indiana State Police, the crash happened at the 6.5 mile marker on I-90. That’s between U.S. 41 and U.S. 20 at the Grand Calumet River. The semi caught fire after going over the bridge. At 8:30 a.m., troopers said cleanup from the crash was expected to take six hours.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Hoosiers will now have two chances to catch the Savannah Bananas at Victory Field. The team will bring their unique brand of baseball to Indiana on June 29 and June 30 as part of their 2023 Banana Ball World Tour. “Due to the immense demand for tickets, we are thrilled to add June 29 to the calendar as the Savannah Bananas swing through Indianapolis on their 2023 Banana Ball World Tour,” said Indianapolis Indians president & general manager Randy Lewandowski.
Indianapolis man facing 35 felonies for series of armed robberies
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police say they’ve linked an Indianapolis man to a series of armed robberies. He’s now facing nearly three dozen felony charges in the case. Jovonni Sanders, 26, is believed to be behind ten robberies committed between Dec. 5, 2021 and March 8, 2022. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said a SWAT team took Sanders into custody on April 1 in the 8300 block of Michigan Road. Formal charges were filed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office on Nov. 28.

Douglas Rutoskey, 36, faces charges of: Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more Leaving the scene of an accident Operating a vehicle while intoxicated Rutoskey was arrested on Nov. 20.

ST. JOHN, Ind. (WISH) — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a St. John Police Department officer fired shots at a vehicle being driven by an off-duty Hammond Police Department officer. According to St. John police, the officer was investigating an abandoned vehicle near 93rd and Cline avenues around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday. He was standing on the shoulder near a ditch with a flashlight.
Sen. Mike Braun files for Indiana governor run in 2024
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Sen. Mike Braun has filed to run for governor of Indiana in 2024 by establishing his campaign committee. The paperwork was filed with the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office on Wednesday morning. The run would open up Braun’s Senate seat. Braun defeated incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly in 2018 to join the Senate. Current Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb will be unable to run for reelection due to term limits.
Indiana uncle-nephew duo charged in Jan. 6 riot investigation

Federal investigators have charged 61-year-old Dale Huttle, of Crown Point, and his nephew, 40-year-old Matthew Huttle, of Hebron, in the case. Dale Huttle was arrested in Crown Point on Nov. 9 and Matthew Huttle was arrested Tuesday in Boise, Idaho.
Purdue to again require SAT, ACT scores for admissions

Docs: Triple murder suspect awaiting trial arrested again after posting gun pics on Snapchat
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A teenage triple murder suspect has been arrested again after investigators said he posted pictures with guns on Snapchat. Caden Smith was just 16 years old when he was charged in Oct. 2021 for the murders of 22-year-old Michael James, 17-year-old Abdullah Mubarak, and 18-year-old Joseph Thomas. Smith was charged as an adult but his attorney, Andrew Baldwin, was able to convince a judge that evidence collected in the case was the product of an invalid search warrant.
Former substitute teacher found guilty of child seduction
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — A former substitute teacher with the Zionsville School Corporation has been found guilty of child seduction. Shawn Martin II, 28, was found guilty on Nov. 24, nearly two years after he was charged. According to investigators, Martin committed the crimes at the home of an underage high school student. He was working with the district when the crimes occured. Martin will be sentenced on Dec. 19.
Man charged in Fishers road rage shooting now connected to Noblesville road rage case
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — For the second day in a row, investigators in Hamilton County have connected an Anderson man to a road rage shooting. Trevor Dahl, 24, was charged on Tuesday for attempted murder after being accused of shooting a man on Nov. 17 following a confrontation while driving. On Wednesday, the Noblesville Police Department linked Dahl to a road rage case that occurred on the evening of Nov. 14.

Authorities: 2 dead in North Carolina helicopter crash
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A helicopter pilot and a meteorologist who worked for a North Carolina television station died following the crash of the station’s helicopter next to an interstate highway in the Charlotte area. WBTV broadcasters who had been reporting on the crash identified their colleagues on air Tuesday about three hours following the deadly incident. The men were identified as meteorologist Jason Myers and pilot Chip Tayag. The crash occurred along Interstate 77.

(AP) — A helicopter pilot and a meteorologist who worked for a North Carolina television station died Tuesday when a news helicopter crashed along an interstate highway in the Charlotte area, according to authorities and the station. Meteorologist Jason Myers and pilot Chip Tayag were identified as the people killed in the crash in a statement by WBTV.
Indianapolis to host 2029 NCAA Men's Final Four
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis now has two future NCAA Men’s Final Four events on the schedule. The city has been announced as host of the 2029 NCAA Men’s Final Four tournament. It will mark the tenth time the city has hosted the Final Four, tied for most. The event is already scheduled to come to Indianapolis in 2026. Lucas Oil Stadium will be the site of the games. The announcement comes a day after Gainbridge Fieldhouse was named host site for the 2028 Women’s Final Four.

Investigators: Fire that killed 2 children in Brazil believed to be caused by electrical issue
BRAZIL, Ind. (WISH) — A mobile home fire that killed two young children in Brazil on Wednesday evening is believed to have been caused by an electrical issue. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says that the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office preliminarily determined the cause to be electrical, possibly from a power strip. Foul play is not suspected. The fire killed 3-year-old Athena Holdbrook and 3-month-old Aries Romine. Their deaths were due to smoke inhalation.
Community Health Network sending letters to patients possibly affected by data breach
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Community Health Network said it will begin notifying patients who may have been affected by a data breach. The company said “cookies” and “pixels” may have allowed sites like Facebook and Google to acquire info about patients. “There is no indication that any Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, or debit/credit card information was collected or transmitted through the third-party tracking technologies,” the organization said.
Police searching for 'armed and dangerous' man wanted out of Hendricks County
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana State Police detectives are trying to located an “armed and dangerous” man. ISP is looking for 43-year-old Timothy Preston of Indianapolis. According to online court records, he’s wanted on a warrant out of Hendricks County for a 2020 case. Preston was charged on Jan. 2, 2020 for dealing and possession of narcotics, driving while suspended with a prior conviction, speeding, operating a motor vehicle with a false plate and being a habitual offender.
IMPD: 2 teens arrested for armed robberies of food delivery drivers
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police have arrested two teenagers accused of robbing east side food delivery drivers at gunpoint. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say a 17-year-old male and a 15-year-old male have been arrested in the case. Their identities have not been released due to being juveniles. According to IMPD, the duo was linked to a theft from a vehicle case that was reported on Nov. 8 in the 10800 block of Snowdrop Way, which is near 38th Street and German Church Road.
Indianapolis man charged for armed robberies at PetSmart, Subway
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man faces charges after being accused of robbing two businesses at gunpoint. James Bennett, 43, is accused of robbing a Subway restaurant in the 6500 block of West Washington Street on the afternoon of Oct. 24 and at PetSmart in the 9700 block of East Washington Street on the evening of Nov. 4. According to a police report, someone was injured in the PetSmart incident. Detectives investigating the cases believed the same suspect to be behind both.
Franklin PD investigating woman's death
FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) — Police are questioning a man following a woman’s death in Franklin. The Franklin Police Department was called to the 2700 block of Woodfield Boulevard around 1:45 a.m. Saturday on a report of a suicide attempt. Officers arrived to find a deceased woman. Police say the man inside the home who made the call is now being questioned by detectives. The victim’s name has not been released and no arrests have been made.
