Sound is having a comeback, especially at the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, where Sanna Almajedi’s program explores sound as a critical component of spiritual practices. Rituals are often accompanied by chanting, singing, music, performance, central to their dissemination and survival.

Maren Hassinger and Senga Nengudi are sitting side by side in the pink-lit halls of The Pizutti, the newly reopened campus at the Columbus Museum of Art. Meditative and composed, the longtime friends and collaborators look on as a work by Nengudi is acted out by Portland-based dancers sidony o’neal and keyon gaskin. The performers balance on a 10-foot-long wooden seesaw, bracing its T-metal bars and raptly responding as each takes turns standing atop, leaning back, or grazing the floor.
